A nekomata is a Japanese mythological being. It is said that when this cat gets older, it's tail splits into two. It has the power to control corpses, so says the "How to Draw Manga: Occult and Horror" book.

It is believed that as the cat gets older, the more the tail gets split down the middle. Like, after one year, the tail would be split only half-way. Probably a year after, each tail would be split completely as two tails.
