I'm sorry -- I didn't see your comment/question, and then quickly thereafter someone decided the case was inactive and boxed it. Are you asking for diffs on examples where editors were accused of having pro-LaRouche secret agendas, because they raised the issue of Dking and COI? I would be happy to provide them. Incidentally, the other editor in question was ], not the anonymous editor you were looking at. Please tell me specifically what you need, and also, is it permissable to restore this section on the COI noticeboard? The matter is certainly not closed. --] 04:16, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Tip of the day...
What are dummy edits good for?

A dummy edit is a slight change in an article's wikitext that has no effect on the rendered page but allows you to save a useful edit summary. This is like a SMS (Short Message Service).

To make a "dummy edit" just make a slight non-rendering change to the page, fill out the edit summary with your short message including this tag: ] (include the four square brackets), and save your change. (Note that a null edit does not modify the wikitext and does not allow you to leave an edit summary.)

VANDALISM THREAT
Guarded __ __ __ __ __

Words of wisdom

Words of wisdom with respect to the legitimacy of the encyclopedia.

Assume no clue

An observation by JonHarder:

Has anyone else noticed how spammers and other conflict of interest editors think the guidelines are for the other guy and what they are doing is "useful" and shouldn't be questioned? And they are completely sincere about that.
It's entirely plausible that an editor can plow blithely on, unaware of certain guidelines.
Perhaps we need a corollary to Assume Good Faith called Assume No Clue, meaning that editors have no clue that they have gone astray of the guidelines until they have been warned, or demonstrate understanding by using guidelines against their competitors!

Protect the encyclopedia

An observation by BradPatrick:

The volume of corporate vanity/vandalism which is showing up on Misplaced Pages is overwhelming.
If we are to remain true to our encyclopedic mission, this kind of nonsense cannot be tolerated. We are losing the battle for encyclopedic content in favor of people intent on hijacking Misplaced Pages for their own memes. This scourge is a serious waste of time and energy.
I am issuing a call to arms to the community to act in a much more draconian fashion in response to corporate self-editing and vanity page creation. This is simply out of hand, and we need your help.

Wonkish and Arbish

An observation by Charles Matthews:

We have dialogues here in two languages. Let's for the purposes of discussion call them Wonkish and Arbish.
In Wonkish, discretion stands for certain vague and disreputable areas of policy where what should happen is not yet properly regulated.
In Arbish, you have always to look behind applications of policy to see intention and the application to the mission of writing the encyclopedia.
In other words, discretion in Arbish is read as saying that proactive admins are the main lines of defence of the project. It is much better to have them out there doing their best, taking the mop and bucket away from a few, than to do up the constraints ever tighter to preempt misuse of admin powers.

You're a genius?

I hope this doesn't offend you, but you didn't seem like a genius. And you don't edit anything particularly brilliant, but rather, your edits seem to be just simple fixes here and there. How about completing the table of logic symbols? That's something I actually wrote on the article's talk page that I was going to do, but never did. Or how about "dumbing down," the articles on advanced mathematics and physics, so that, for example, the average reader can understand what the hell this means? At least maybe you can help me correct the article on Classical Liberalism. Robocracy 07:09, 17 November 2006 (UTC) aka HP_Owner in the IRC

No, I really cannot imagine why Mensa let me in. Given your low estimation of my intelligence, you won't be disappointed that I decline your offer of an assortment of ambitions in which you've lost interest. — Æ. 14:00, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up

I didn't know WP:COI/N existed. I've posted relevant information there. Thanks! fethers 14:46, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Newton Falls, Ohio

Thanks for your kind and wise words. I plan not to reply further unless User:NewtonFallsLeader can provide links to policies as I asked. If no one pays attention, maybe he'll go away, or proceed as you suggest. If he starts adding the link again, would my removing what I consider to be linkspam be subject to WP:3RR in your opinion? Thanks again, Ruhrfisch 05:13, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

You're very welcome. I think for now it's best not to revert soon but rather let that issue remain in suspension, so to speak. The other guy is clearly a single purpose editor. Let him busy himself spamming the same lengthy texts on what, three talk pages and one noticeboard so far? Irritating, but there's so much more to Misplaced Pages—keep your cool, and keep the faith. — Athænara ✉ 05:22, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again - I appreciate your help. My user page was vandalized for the first time ever today by an IP whose edits to Newton Falls, Ohio I had removed (but not NewtonFallsLeader). When it rains, it pours ;-). P.S. I also think you are the first person to correctly use the umlaut in my username (I dropped it to make things easier). Congrats! Ruhrfisch 03:23, 3 February 2007 (UTC) (aka Rührfisch)
I'm probably not the only one who suspects a connection between that anon vandalism and the other brouhaha … — Athænara ✉ 04:29, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
The thought had crossed my mind too. Ruhrfisch 04:40, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Rührfisch, has this thing gone away yet? — Athænara 10:50, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

The dispute has been partially resolved. User NewtonFallsLeader read at least some of your comments on this matter and seems to finally realize why his insistence on including the link does not meet WP:EL. I told him that specific subpages of the website he runs could probably be used as references for the Newton Falls, Ohio article (for example the website lists the winners of the 2006 Old Car Show, which is mentioned in the article).
Our last exchange was my explaining the differences between references and external links again. I have not heard anything from him since that on Feb. 11th, nor has he made any edits since then (see his talk page if you are interested). I archived our past exchanges on the Newton Falls, Ohio talk page at his request (he wanted to get rid of them, but also asked how to do this). I thought he was on his way to becoming a productive editor who contributed to articles (or at least one article ;-) but I am not so sure what will happen now.
The one unresolved issue is his appeal to WP:AMA. I figured that was not a huge deal as he seems to accept the idea of what meets WP:EL now, and is perhaps an inactive account. Thanks again for your help and wise counsel. Please let me know if there is ever anything I can do to be of assistance, Ruhrfisch 11:51, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the update. The user hasn't edited the WP:AMA page in the past three weeks or so—I guess he'd withdraw it if he knew how. — Æ. 11:59, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Poll

I see you've archived our discussion about this. In any case you may be interested in the current poll at Talk:Newton Falls, Ohio. Or you may wisely run the other way and never look back ;-) Thanks, Ruhrfisch 11:51, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

X Japan

Hi, since you have previously provided your input at Talk: X Japan, I was wondering if you could do the same at Misplaced Pages:Requests for comment/Darkcat21. The X Japan article has recently been unprotected and the other editor involved in the initial dispute, Darkcat21, has since engaged in yet another edit war, (re)adding content based on sources which have been disputed by multiple editors. Since several means of dispute resolution have already been exhausted (such as pointing out policies, requesting third opinions and temporary page protection), a request for comment appears to be the next logical step. But there are few editors at least somewhat familiar with the situation, that's why I'm contacting you - I hope that's not a problem. Regards - Cyrus XIII 03:29, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

My contributions to that discussion (here and here, about personal websites as sources) were very minor, but I will take a look at the Rfc as you suggest. — Athænara 04:13, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Cyrus—sorry I took so long to see that there was a niche there for my minor role in the thing—I posted on the RFC page a few minutes ago. — Athænara 10:31, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I really liked your "For the user to not treat fundamental Misplaced Pages principles as if they were a nuisance" line! — Æ. 10:59, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your support! That line actually used to end with "...and act in accordance with them in the future, or not all." but I left it to ShadowHalo to decide whether that "or not at all" bit was too harsh and he opted to remove it. Now, I really hope something good comes out of that RFC. As you might have noticed, there has been unrest on Talk:X Japan again. Great to have my behavior called "unreasonable" by a newcomer to the issue, huh? But that editor is probably still a little sore from a different dispute I had with him regarding a style issue. Take care - Cyrus XIII 21:24, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

This is the wrong Bobby Bird. I originally made the link, but de-linked it after noticing that it was wrong. I'm changing it back to be unlinked. Thanks. Is that explicable enough?  :-) -anon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.153.32.226 (talkcontribs) 15:46, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
