Thank you!

Hello, Jonesey95,

I just wanted to thank you for catching this non-template content that is put on Template pages. I think because new editors can not create articles, and many seem to not know about Draft space, they start articles on Template pages or on Article Talk pages. We have a Quarry query that now reports orphaned Talk pages where editors have started articles but, as far as Template space, we rely on editors working in and familiar with that namespace to come across misplaced pages and tag them for deletion. So, thank you for doing so! I'm sure you have seem much surprising content that has been hidden away in Template space, sometimes for years, before an editor has stumbled across it. I think there are unused template reports but someone still must have to go through those long lists. Your work is appreciated! Liz 18:58, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. A group of us has pretty much caught up with the unused templates (no transclusions). There was a lot of accidental junk in there, which you noticed me marking for deletion last year. I am slowly working my way through the 9,000 templates at Misplaced Pages:Database reports/Uncategorized templates now, and there is a bunch of similar stuff, but this time with a single transclusion. For the obvious garbage, I have been substing the templates (typically in a user sandbox page) and then marking them for speedy deletion. Unless anyone else decides to go through this report at high speed, it will probably take me a few months to get through it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:02, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

User:FlightTime/UBX/Archive helper

Can you please explain exactly what the problem is here? - FlightTime (open channel) 20:14, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

I was working around a bug in MediaWiki. Do a Find on mw:Help:Images for "If there is a space character" to see If there is a space character between link and the equals sign, the link statement will be treated as a caption. and If there is a space character between alt and the equals sign, the alt statement will be treated as a caption. Notice that in the previous revision, your link was not working. Alt text, if it had been present, would not have worked either. The bug report is at T306216. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:22, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
Now I understand, thank you. - FlightTime (open channel) 23:58, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

"Template:Gardheere-samaale=edit" listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has identified a potential problem with the redirect Template:Gardheere-samaale=edit and has thus listed it for discussion. This discussion will occur at Misplaced Pages:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 September 25#Template:Gardheere-samaale=edit until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. --Minorax 05:07, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Template:collapsed infobox section begin & linter errors

Please have a look at this edit I made to Philip DeFranco to fixed linter errors caused by {{collapsed infobox section begin}}. It was the only way I found to tie-in with the div tags added by the template's |div=yes parameter. Leaving out |div=yes messes up the output. Is there a cleaner solution to this problem? Thanks. —Bruce1ee 09:26, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

<div>...</div> tags often (but not always, confusingly) need to be at the start of a new line. In many cases, simply adding a line break or removing colon indent formatting will fix this sort of problem. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:06, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, but there are still two lint errors, a stripped tag and a missing end tag. I did try starting the template on a new line. —Bruce1ee 13:14, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
Oof, I've got egg on my face. I thought I had checked it before saving. I just tried six different ways to resolve this problem, and none of them worked. I punted and claimed MOS:HIDE in my edit summary. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:42, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
Fair enough! I did the same hack on Kausea Natano here, but I'm not sure how to convert a collapsed infobox section template to one that's not collapsed. When you have a moment, could you look at that one as well please. Thanks. —Bruce1ee 17:04, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
I am inclined to leave it as is. When fixing Linter errors, I prefer to change the formatting of the page as little as possible, lest I rekindle contentious issues about formatting that had been discussed and agreed upon by consensus. If Lint-fixing becomes disruptive, we'll be asked to stop doing it, and I don't think that will be good for the long-term health of the encyclopedia. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:39, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
OK, thanks. —Bruce1ee 20:54, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

La Junta

what is "please use preview" supposed to mean? Nevermore27 (talk) 22:31, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Use the "Show preview" button to see what a proposed edit will look like. If it looks good and you do not see any errors, then click Publish. In this case, your edit modified the article to call templates that do not exist, thereby breaking the color scheme in the tables. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:58, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

what sense?

Hi, Jonesey95!

About Follow the link. All formatting tags that are opened must be closed. The syntax highlighter gadget is helpful

Where the link to Follow?

Please, explain a sense for closing of ''' or '' in the end of row, e.g.

a b c d

is the same

a b c d

Yuri V. (tc) 19:34, 28 September 2022 (UTC).

I meant the link to Linter that was in my previous edit summary. The page had a missing end tag error, which is explained at mw:Help:Lint_errors/missing-end-tag. I recommend enabling the Syntax highlighter gadget, which you can do at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:12, 28 September 2022 (UTC)
The main question is #what sense?. Sorry, no answer: what's the point? Agree that putting ''' or '' at the end of the line makes no sense. The bot violates optimality, because it is enough to put ''' or '' at the beginning of the line. Therefore, I ask you to fix the bot so that it always removes ''' or '' at the end of the line in such cases. Or at least forbid the bot to put ''' or '' at the end rows, because it violates the principle of optimality. — Yuri V. (tc) 20:31, 29 September 2022 (UTC).
I don't make the rules. On Misplaced Pages, and in HTML and XML and many other markup languages, tags need to be balanced. If you would like to work within a system that you view as optimal, you are welcome to edit a different web site. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:09, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Portal lint

Thanks for all the painstaking work sorting out the Linter errors on Portals and elsewhere. Gnomes don't always receive the recognition they deserve, and no single edit is going to transform Misplaced Pages, but in total they're leaving the pages in a much tidier state for the future. Certes (talk) 18:53, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing. Portal pages are a real pain, because they transclude portions of pages that sometimes have their own Linter errors in them, and the LintHint tool does not work properly. Special:ExpandTemplates usually works, thankfully. Also, there are a couple of bugs in related templates that I have reported; the error count can't go to zero until those are fixed or worked around (and all possible transcluded article space errors are fixed). I think that I have about 30 more stripped tags to do before I declare victory and retreat. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:04, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks

That is a really great fix! 85.238.101.64 (talk) 03:40, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Thank you. All it takes is some common sense and a read through the template's documentation. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:35, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
I feel your irony ) By adding "-" (or "By" later) I was only trying to maneuver between/satisfy the dissatisfaction of other editors about the article was falling into various erroneous categories after emptying the field... Then you were dissatisfied. Dead end. 85.238.103.38 (talk) 14:47, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Supplementary

Hello. How do I cite the supplementary material for a journal article? Specifically this one. LittleJerry (talk) 21:35, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

I would put https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4235892/bin/13280_2014_534_MOESM1_ESM.pdf in the |url= parameter of {{cite journal}}. For the title, I would write "Ganges River Dolphin: An Overview of Biology, Ecology, and Conservation Status in India (Supplementary material 1)". – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:58, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

discussion at ANI

Hi Jonesey95! I made a post to Administrator's Noticeboard about the automated edits that User:DemocraticLuntz has been performing. I saw you had similar concerns which you shared on their talk page, so I thought you might want to be aware of the discussion. -- Mikeblas (talk) 14:29, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks Mikeblas. I usually stay far away from WP drama, but I posted a short note there. I hope it helps. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:03, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
Me, too. :| But I felt like something needed to be done to improve the situation. We'll see how it goes! -- Mikeblas (talk) 00:14, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

That graph of GoCE progress

At File:Copyeditors_progress.png, there's a beautiful and educative graph showing the progress of the brave men and women of this noble mission. I note that you are the one who's been maintaining it for years. What information are you going off of to reckon it out? It seems like the kind of task that might easily be automated, thus saving you some drudgery (and allowing it to be updated more regularly as well, since the current version is from last September). jp×g 04:33, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing both my efforts and my lack of updates. You are welcome to create something that is easier to keep up to date. The data comes from Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Progress. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:43, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
@JPxG, looks like it could be automated with {{Category chart}}. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:15, 22 October 2022 (UTC)

Gallery, alt, and Lint

Hey! I recently came across Module talk:Random slideshow once again while looking into other issues, and remembered the linter errors that were occurring. I decided I would look through the issue for a bit, and came back across this link about file linter issues in the portal namespace being caused by the module. While trying to fix it, I've learnt that gallery feels extremely weird, sometimes not doing what it says it should, so I wanted to ask a few questions since you seem to know this better.

  • Does the alt option even work for galleries? I did some quick testing by setting the alt parameter to values and I couldn't find a single visible change. If not, then I could fix >90% of the linter issues from the above link by just removing the alt during processing in the module (though a more thorough fix to do with moving named params to the end instead of the start may be worth looking into).
  • Is tables ({| |}) not working in galleries an intentional feature? (Context) It's the only other cause for the linter issues (apart from unlucky naming schemes), and its a lot more troubling as I don't see an intended (or unintended) workaround.

Thanks. Aidan9382 (talk) 11:49, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

|alt= works in galleries. You can see it if you go to Special:ExpandTemplates, add some gallery code with an alt tag, and enable HTML rendering. As for tables, since a table needs to start on a new line and a gallery item needs to be on a single line, I think they are simply incompatible with each other. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:20, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Template:Cratstats/doc

Hi. I nearly tagged Template:Cratstats/doc for deletion back in March, but wasn't sure by what criteria or rational, so I just added to my watchlist to see if anyone else nominated and how. According to a post at Template talk:Cratstats the doc page was created in order to categorize it. Then the (mis)categorization was removed with none replacing it.

But why have you chosen to speedy per WP:G7? It doesn't seem to apply here. Wondering if that's why it hasn't been deleted yet? --DB1729 17:22, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

I figured it was worth a try. It doesn't really fit any of the criteria, but the bot removes it from the page, so it's sort of like "deleted by page author", but not really. Another, probably better, option would be to contact the bot operator to ask them to add a doc section to the template page and ask the bot to leave it alone. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:25, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the explanation. Will wait and see what happens. --DB1729 17:30, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

short description glitch

I found an article where the short description was edited and the closing "}}" braces left out. The article had a hatnote, so the closing braces of the hatnote actually closed what became part of a very long short description. It was noticed and fixed relatively quickly. But the SD was used elsewhere via {{annotated link}}, and that also article contained the weird SD text. I did either a purge or null edit, or maybe a real edit to fix something else. I assume the change to the actual SD in the other article would have filtered down eventually. Just mentioning this F.Y.I. in case you hadn't seen this before. Probably not a big deal. MB 22:52, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. Yes, unclosed templates can cause all manner of weirdness, and fixing the error in pages or sections that are transcluded does not instantly fix the error everywhere else. A null edit is often required to fix affected pages; the MediaWiki software typically does its own null edits within an hour, but it can sometimes take days or weeks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:51, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Your linter transclusions page

Hey! While looking through some discussions, I had come across User:Jonesey95/linter transclusions, and I decided to give some of the pages on there a fix. I looked at the history and see you tend to trim the pages which you have (presumably) fixed. Would you like me to do the same? Also, on a side note, the issue for User:ThisIsNotABetter/Template:LaptopBattery lied in the documentation page, which is probably why nothing picked up with whatever script you use (some weird table shenanigans). Aidan9382 (talk) 19:32, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

You are welcome to trim an item from the list if you have removed every Linter error from the page you are removing. Please do not remove pages just because you think they are not broken; if they still have Linter errors, I want them on the list for me to review. Thanks for working on it! – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:48, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

Template:ART/doc

Hello, Jonesey95,

This page you created is tagged for speedy deletion. I thought you were probably not notified about it. It's a doc page for an existing template so I was unsure whether or not this is an "uncontroversial deletion". I assumed if it was, you would have tagged it yourself. So, I just wanted to check in with you first. Usually template pages that are tagged CSD sit for hours before anyone takes action on them unless they are orphaned talk pages so if you come back online soon, you can let me know whether this page should be untagged.

Thanks! I hope you are having a good weekend! Liz 21:51, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

OK to delete. Thanks for checking. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:49, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

Template:Inactive WikiProject banner

Hello, again, Jonesey95,

I have a question about this template that I hope you can help me with. I was going to use the Template talk page but there are unanswered questions there so I don't think it's being monitored. This is a question that arises from a discussion on my talk page. For the past couple of years, we've been deleting empty WikiProject categories that are emptied after a WikiProject goes inactive or defunct and assessments are removed from article talk pages. This process might have been going on for longer but this is when I got involved.

So, my question is what bot is responsible for changing the templates on article talk pages that removes the assessment ratings and then posts this template? How soon after a WikiProject is marked "inactive" does this occur? I've noticed that it seems to happen about a year after a WikiProject's status is changed to "inactive" but this is just my observation, I don't know this as a fact. I'm assuming that a bot is involved as assessment ratings are on millions of article talk pages and I can't imagine any other way to alter this many templates.

I hope you, or any talk page stalker, knows how this works. If you don't know, maybe you could point me in the direction of a template editor who might. Thanks! Liz 02:05, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

I have generally stayed away from WikiProject templates, pages, and categories. I find the WikiProject template family too fiddly, and the class/rating system too arbitrary, for my brain to comprehend and engage with. I answer a lot of template-protected edit requests, but I almost never look at WikiProject template requests. That's the long way of saying that I am not the right person for your question. You might look at a few base-level WikiProject templates to see who is discussing and editing them. I'm thinking of {{WPBannerMeta}} and {{WikiProject banner shell}} and other templates in their family. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:35, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
Okay, I appreciate the suggestion. This might evolve into a Village Pump discussion but I wanted to check in with an editor familiar with templates first. Liz 04:05, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

Withrow, Minnesota

Hello, Jonesey95! In the past, you have done amaziing copy edits of the ghost town articles I have authored, Elcor, Minnesota and Manganese, Minnesota. I'm here with my hat in hand to ask you to do another: Withrow, Minnesota. This will be my third, and probably final, ghost town article, and it is also the longest, so I apologize in advance. Unlike Elcor and Manganese, which have finite information available since both communities had very specific beginnings and endings, Withrow, is some sense, still exists. As always, you have my humble thanks.DrGregMN (talk) 21:53, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Jonesey95! Sorry to bug you, but my misuse of the possessive form of "it's" and the failure to capitalize "Creek" as a proper noun can't be the only copy edits necessary for this article. I know you are very busy doing templates right now, but copy editing is your true calling (that's why you're my favorite). My biggest concerns with the article right now:
Does the time line seem too "choppy"?
Are there too many redundancies in the article?
Do you suggest a way to incorporate Clarence LeRoy Kinyon as a notable resident since he is frequently mentioned in other areas of the article?
Looking forward to your magic in making this article read and flow well before moving it to peer review. As always, my best. DrGregMN (talk) 18:07, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
I expect to find a block of time to work on it in the next few days. I like to have at least an hour of uninterrupted time to do copy editing, which is why I do a lot less of it than I used to. Life is more interrupted for me these days. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:35, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

DrGregMN, I am done with copy edits, unless I missed something. I think it would be helpful to say something at the outset like "In the present day, Withrow is a community consisting of a handful of businesses and residences in the rural outskirts of Minneapolis, but from the 1890s to the 1950s, it was a center of commerce and civic life, drawing from a nearby population of about 500 people." It is never really clear in the early part of the article that this is essentially a ghost town.

Elsewhere in the article, I think the details about railway subdivisions are excessive, reading like railfan trivia that is not relevant to Withrow. The section on the Ballroom also includes too much detail about changes in ownership and reads a bit too much like a tourist promotion. I removed some of it, leaving all of the refs. Some more detail and some of the redundant refs probably need to be removed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:49, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, Jonesey 95! It reads and flows so much better now! I may add some detail back with regard to the railroads: the whole reason why Withrow became a division point and a new line constructed was because the original line to Sault St. Marie was crooked with steep grades along the St. Croix with limited loading capacity on the bridge; I believe that's worthy of mention. I also caught note of your "whens?" placed in the article: I can certainly cite a specific year for when the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts were active in Withrow from the publications, but I don't know specific date ranges. I could telephone the BSA and GSA home offices; I would like to believe they have that in their history, but personal communication is not considered a "reliable source" for Misplaced Pages. With the copy edits, it is certainly over-sourced now, I will go through and pick out the best sources and eliminate the more redundant ones; however, I would rather have too many than too few: when it comes to ghost towns, I like to make sure anyone researching them can find all the information they may be looking for in one place. Thank you again! I'll move this up the chain and we'll see where it goes! DrGregMN (talk) 15:21, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
The "when" template in the Scouting paragraph was intended as a general comment on that paragraph, and really on the well-researched article as a whole. The article never really gave me a sense of the range of decades when Withrow was a bustling community and when those community activities dwindled to the rural outpost that it appears to be now. My guess is that the writer(s) of the article were too familiar with the content to be able to take a step back and think about that larger context. Providing that general sense would be helpful to readers. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:56, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
The Copyeditor's Barnstar
Don't know if there is a Template Editor's Barnstar, but you certainly deserve this! DrGregMN (talk) 16:07, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

Lots of Linter

That's a lot of linter you had to do in my edits, thankx! Please understand that these weeks I am working on a large datadefinition set (ISO 4217), with unclear definitions by itself (ouch) and non-simple definitions at enwiki, wikidata. So ID-research and bringing it to mainspace requires lots of tests. The peseta is not easy to crack, but its worth it. DePiep (talk) 06:25, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

You're doing all the difficult work. I'm just keeping an eye on Template space for any stray bits of dust and sweeping them up. No worries. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:06, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

Inadequate template documentation

Thanks for checking in on the Routemap template I made. I will be starting work on a second one to eventually replace it so that it can be labeled properly. That being said, it may end up becoming difficult to read because it there are 240+ stations, meaning at least 120 rows will be required. Hotdog with ketchup (talk) 15:55, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

I recommend finishing the first one, {{Metra System}}, and putting it to use somewhere, before starting on a second template. Templates that are not used tend to be deleted, and I wouldn't want to see you waste your time. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:18, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
Just to clarify—I meant remaking the same template and keeping the first one as a draft until it is properly finished. Not a second template of another system altogether. Thank you for checking, though! Hotdog with ketchup (talk) 21:05, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
You don't need to create a second template, since the first one is currently unused. Just modify the first template, or wipe it out and start over. You'll still have the current code available through the page's history. You could also create a page at Template:Metra System/sandbox. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:51, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

Got it. Thank you! Hotdog with ketchup (talk) 00:40, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

User:Hydnjo/non-iconic header

I also tried your edit of User:Hydnjo/non-iconic header, but that changed the appearance, which is why I left one set of <span>...</span> unchanged. Take a look and see for yourself. Anomalocaris (talk) 00:01, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

I'll take a look. See your talk page for a different approach. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:02, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Hmm, I played with it. If you strip out all of that span/div junk, leaving the table, the table displays. It appears that something related to the span and div tags, possibly a Linter or Linter-ish syntax error, was hiding the table that should have been displayed. ... (a few minutes later...) I think I have fixed it with this edit and maybe this edit. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:13, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Edit request - Madara (manga)#Volumes

Please correct the templates used to display these tables: Madara (manga)#Volumes. They're currently displayed below the infobox if you resize your browser window. 177.32.61.128 (talk) 01:46, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

It appears that the page is not protected. You probably could have done it yourself. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:51, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Template deletion

Hi, you suggested to delete my templates.

I'm not familiar with the process of Templates deletion. How would Userfy work? Schrauber5 (talk) 18:29, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

That means that the templates would be moved to User:Schrauber5/Marstime template, for example. They would still function in the same way, and you would be welcome to use them within pages that are part of your User space, like your sandbox or other test pages. To request that the templates be moved to your User space, go to the TFD discussion and add a comment with your request. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:46, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Source tags in your scripts

Some of the AutoEd scripts in your userspace have deprecated <source>...</source> tags, which is putting them in Category:Pages using deprecated source tags. These tags are unnecessary in js pages now because they have inbuilt syntaxhighlighting. Will you mind removing them from these:

  1. User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/authorlink.js
  2. User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/coauthors.js
  3. User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/core.js
  4. User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/core1.js
  5. User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/core2.js
  6. User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/core3.js
  7. User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/core4.js
  8. User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/core5.js

 Done. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:40, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/authorlink.js is adding itself to Category:CS1 errors: parameter link at line 9.
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:10, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Fixed, thanks. That error has been in there for years. My guess is that the <source>...</source> tags may have been doing something after all. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:05, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
Actually I think the source tags came when you forked AutoEd pages in project space such as Misplaced Pages:AutoEd/core.js. It was needed there since that page is in wikitext content model, not javascript. These are now in error cats too and need same fix of : before category - User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/issn.js, User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/pages.js, User:Jonesey95/AutoEd/twoisbnparams.js. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 04:24, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
