On January 23, 2023, a spree killer opened fire at two farms, killing seven people and critically injuring an eighth person, in Half Moon Bay, California. The suspect, identified as 67-year-old resident Zhao Chunli, was taken into custody after he was found inside his car outside of the Half Moon Bay Police Department. The suspect worked at one of the farms, and all of the victims were his Chinese-American coworkers.

Shootings

At 2:22 p.m., first responders were notified of a shooting at the Mountain Mushroom Farm. Upon arriving, they discovered four deceased individuals with gunshot wounds. A fifth victim who survived was transported to Stanford University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. As responders were arriving, the gunman drove to the Concord Farm in his vehicle, where he fatally shot three more victims. Several children were also present at both shooting scenes, but they were left unharmed.

At approximately 4:40 p.m., the suspect, who was identified as 67-year-old Zhao Chunli, was found in his car at the parking lot of the Half Moon Bay Police Department. Zhao was taken into custody without incident, and a weapon was located inside his vehicle. Zhao worked at one of the farms, and all of the victims were his coworkers.

During a press briefing, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed that President Joe Biden had directed federal law enforcement to render assistance to the local authorities during investigations.
