On 15 April 2023, an attack was made on Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, while he was visiting Wakayama, a city in the Kansai region of Japan.
Incident
On 15 April 2023, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was giving a speech in the city of Wakayama in support of a Liberal Democratic Party politician, when what was described as a "smoke bomb" detonated near him. Kishida was unharmed by the smoke bomb and was evacuated from the area, but a policeman was injured. A man was arrested at the scene after throwing the smoke bomb on suspicions of "obstruction of business".
Following the incident, Kishida stated, "I am sorry for causing many people to be concerned. We are in the middle of an important election for our country. We must carry this on together." The incident came less than one year after the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe on 8 July 2022.
