On 15 April 2023, an attack was made on Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, while he was visiting Wakayama, a city in the Kansai region of Japan.

Incident

On 15 April 2023, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was giving a speech in the city of Wakayama in support of a Liberal Democratic Party politician, a candidate running for Wakayama 1st district by-election, when what was described as an explosive device like "pipe bomb" detonated 1 meter beside him. Kishida was unharmed by the explosive and was evacuated from the area, but a policeman was injured. The explosive device dropped near Kishida exploded a few dozen seconds later. While the man who threw it was preparing a second shot, a local fisherman (ryoshi) held the man at first. The man was arrested at the scene after throwing the device on suspicions of "obstruction of business". According to residents living near the arrested man's home in Hyogo Prefecture, he appeared quiet and gentle.

Following the incident, Kishida stated, "I am sorry for causing many people to be concerned. We are in the middle of an important election for our country. We must carry this on together." The incident came less than one year after the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe on 8 July 2022.
