Tech News: 2023-20

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Problems

  • Citations that are automatically generated based on ISBN are currently broken. This affects citations made with the VisualEditor Automatic tab, and the use of the citoid API in gadgets and user scripts. Work is ongoing to restore this feature.

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 May. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 May. It will be on all wikis from 18 May (calendar).
  • Starting on Wednesday, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link" (Gorontalo Misplaced Pages, Hausa Misplaced Pages, Hakka Chinese Misplaced Pages, Hawaiian Misplaced Pages, Fiji Hindi Misplaced Pages, Croatian Misplaced Pages, Upper Sorbian Misplaced Pages, Haitian Creole Misplaced Pages, Interlingua Misplaced Pages, Interlingue Misplaced Pages, Igbo Misplaced Pages, Iloko Misplaced Pages, Ingush Misplaced Pages, Ido Misplaced Pages, Icelandic Misplaced Pages, Inuktitut Misplaced Pages, Jamaican Patois Misplaced Pages, Javanese Misplaced Pages). This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally.

Future changes

  • There is a recently formed team at the Wikimedia Foundation which will be focusing on experimenting with new tools. Currently they are building a prototype ChatGPT plugin that allows information generated by ChatGPT to be properly attributed to the Wikimedia projects.
  • Gadget and userscript developers should replace jquery.cookie with mediawiki.cookie. The jquery.cookie library will be removed in ~1 month, and staff developers will run a script to replace any remaining uses at that time.

Notice of Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents discussion

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. The thread is Request a ban for Flamelai. Thank you. -Lemonaka‎ 01:58, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

We suspected this account was compromised, but I don't know how to file a request in such case. -Lemonaka‎ 01:59, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
@Lemonaka Help me understand how I'm involved? -- RoySmith (talk) 12:07, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
Eh, my bad. I just want to invite a checkuser to join this discussion. Anyway, a quick CU was filed on Wp:spi by other user. -Lemonaka‎ 12:20, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

Queue 7

Moved to WT:DYK § Standseilbahn Linth-Limmern
I'm not sure what you're asking. Restore the thread to my talk page, or restore the hook to the queue? -- RoySmith (talk) 23:00, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
The hook initially added in the preparation queue to the other queue. Otherwise, the uncoordinated edit of the user who isn't participating in discussions goes on the main page. Enhancing999 (talk) 23:08, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
Best to keep this all in one place on WT:DYK. -- RoySmith (talk) 23:21, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
I'm asking you as you moved the edit of that user to the main page. I don't think any of the other participants can fix it. Enhancing999 (talk) 23:23, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
Please pick this up on WT:DYK, thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 23:25, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

How long I need to wait before appealing

Hi, don’t block me. I didn’t edit anything. I created this account just so I can talk with an admin. I just wanted to know how long I need to wait before I can Appel? It’s been 2 months. And I don’t remember the details of the sock account. Tekle18400 (talk) 15:04, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

I have no clue who you are, so I couldn't even begin to answer your question. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:58, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

Lots of socks

Hey there,

I think you are familiar with this case Misplaced Pages:Sockpuppet investigations/Jomontgeorge/Archive, and all the socks that keep popping up. I am certain that AnnaMankad is just one of the few new ones due to similar interest area in Pooja Hegde and her films like Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. Could you please take a look? Also pinging Ponyo. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 12:57, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

P.S.: I'm sure there are many more socks and IPs going around. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 12:57, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Please file an SPI and somebody will look at it. Thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:00, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
I've blocked the account as a  Confirmed sock. -- Ponyo 15:44, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, Ponyo. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 18:45, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

AN Close

Good morning RoySmith,

Thanks for closing this! I suppose it's a long shot, but since you commented on the BLP appeal, I'll give it a shot before going out for the day. By my count, the !votes were 30-21, and many on the support said they did not believe my edits would be unproductive to the enclyopedia and that the situation made an early appeal reasonable. As I said at my case, the emotional part is mostly the incredibly huge scope of the ban (not the anti-trans BLPs/ORGs, the rest that was collateral) and the increased harassment that resulted, so I'd really appreciate it if you use your discretion to allow me the limited exception as there's no evidence I'd do wrong there and a lot of the community willing to give me a shot for the full thing. I just wanna edit LGBT rights in New York and the like over pride, and it would go a long way to making the ban feel relatively painless and non-punitive for the next few months.

I won't be able to respond for a while since I'm going out. Best regards, TheTranarchist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 14:30, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

@TheTranarchist I put in an effort to be restrained and professional in my closing statement. I'll be more blunt here. Just let this be. Really. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:35, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but you should honestly reconsider. The fact that the original ANI thread was filed by a sock should be enough to lift the topic ban. The fact that TheTranarchist is still TBANned, despite 1) the circumstances behind the ban and 2) the supports outnumbering the opposes (and yes, I know that Misplaced Pages is not a democracy) should be enough for that TBAN to be lifted. LilianaUwU 17:43, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
As an uninvolved editor, I'm curious how you get a majority supporting undoing it @LilianaUwU. My most favorable to the supports count (giving full weight to moral, weak, and conditional supports) still doesn't get a majority and Roy, in his head count, found opposes outnumbered supports. Barkeep49 (talk) 18:11, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
While it wasn't a significant majority (my count seems to hover at around 20 on each side), the nature of the TBAN should be enough to revert it. LilianaUwU 18:35, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
Tewdar's five-step plan:
  • Stay away from GENSEX
  • Practice encyclopaedic writing style
  • Appeal when six months is up
  • Don't start any more appeals until six months is up (don't listen to anyone who tells you this is a good idea)
  • Profit (hopefully) 😁
