Town of Salem 2 is an online multiplayer game with social deduction and strategy elements. It is the sequel to Town of Salem, a similar game developed and published by the same developer, BlankMediaGames. It was announced on April 22, 2023, on the developer's YouTube channel, and released on Steam Early Access on May 26, 2023, with alpha testing occurring in the interim period. Unlike its predecessor, Town of Salem 2 is exclusively on Steam. The game largely contains similar gameplay to its predecessor, with some changes, notably the removal of the Mafia faction.

Gameplay

The game picks up from its predecessor, with a majority of the roles remaining in the transition between the two games. Roles are secretly assigned to players, all belonging to different teams. The goal of each team is to eliminate all other teams to gain control of the town. Each role has their own abilities that they may use in order to achieve victory. The major change between the game and its predecessor is its removal of the Mafia faction. Instead, its roles from the previous game were reincorporated to new and existing roles in the Coven faction. Their win conditions remain the same: The Coven's goal is to kill all the non-Coven, the Town's goal is to eliminate the evil roles, while the Neutral roles have their own win conditions, which may conflict with the other teams.

Matches are made up of rounds, alternating between day and night. At night, each player has abilities they may use to influence the flow of the game, like gaining clues about a player's role, or protecting another player, or killing a player. Any information they may gain during the night can be written in their own will. During the day, players killed during the previous night have their roles and wills revealed. This, in conjunction with information learned from the night prior and shared with the town may be used to accuse someone of being evil. With the votes of the town, a player found guilty will be publicly lynched, with their role and will similarly revealed. The game continues until one side reaches their win condition.

Unlike its predecessor, which remained stationary outside of the roles and abilities players had at night, the game allows players to decorate, customize, and walk around their houses during nighttime. After their death, players can move around the town freely as ghosts and enter other players' houses. Communication is improved, with the ability to tag players, keywords, and roles in chat, aiding in the discussion during the day.

New roles and balance changes were introduced with the game to counter old metas and introduce new ones. In particular, several changes to Town roles give an edge to the non-Town factions. Changes to the roles for balancing purposes continue to be made in updates while the game is in Early Access.

Development

While the game was announced in April 2023, the team had brought up the idea for the game years prior. Many assets for the game had been created anew or repurposed from Traitors In Salem, a social deduction game created by BlankMediaGames in the vein of Among Us. Alpha testing for the game had been ongoing secretly prior to the announcement, and a new wave of testers were introduced after.

Despite the new game, the developers plan to continue running the original Town of Salem alongside Town of Salem 2. The developers stated that they expect Town of Salem to always have demand, and that they hoped that the launch of Town of Salem 2 would introduce new players to both games, existing side-by-side with their respective player bases.

An early access roadmap for the game was published by the developers, detailing planned additions that were upcoming during the early access period. These include a party system with friends, reconnecting to disconnected games, a Ranked gamemode, and others.

An issue that troubled its predecessor was the incessant spamming and gamethrowing by bots and trolls invading the game. To discourage this, Town of Salem moved from a free-to-play model to a pay-to-play model, set at US$5. In comparison, Town of Salem 2 costs US$10, and in-game accounts are tied to the player's Steam account.

Another issue from its predecessor was the data breach of its entire player database, affecting 7.6 million users. The breach occurred on December 13, 2018, and was revealed on January 16, 2019, on a Reddit thread about the breach by the hackers. Concerns on data security were addressed in the official FAQ section of the Town of Salem 2 website, stating that the game would be using the Steam Authentication API for accounts, and would not be storing sensitive information in their database.

On a Steam blogpost, BlankMediaGames revealed that Town of Salem 2 matched its predecessor's all-time high concurrent user count on Steam, reaching over 3,700 concurrent players. The developers also revealed that sales for the game exceeded that of Town of Salem's Coven DLC and its mobile port launch.
