Nigel Winterburn (born December 11 1963) is a retired British footballer.
He was a part of the legendary Arsenal F.C. defensive back-four in the 1980s and 1990s with Tony Adams, Lee Dixon and Steve Bould. Winterburn played on the left, replacing veteran Kenny Sansom. He joined Arsenal from Wimbledon on May 26 1987 for £350,000 (£407,000) and played 584 games for the club. He won three full international caps, three B caps and also played at Under-21 and Youth levels. He was affectionately nicknamed 'psycho-squirrel'.
He was born in Nuneaton and began his career as an apprentice at Birmingham City F.C. in 1981. Never playing a game for Birmingham he moved to Oxford United F.C. and then Wimbledon F.C. in September 1983 on a free transfer. He played almost 200 games for Wimbledon and was the Player of the Season every year he was there, before his move to Arsenal. He left Arsenal in 2001 and joined West Ham United. He was released by the Hammers in the summer of 2003 and announced his retirement in August 2003.
