Hi ScottishFinnishRadish, if you have time would you mind looking at the recent edit history of the Anna Freud article with regard to disruptive editing? There is an editor making controversial additions (eg. that Anna was homophobic, anorexic, an occultist, not a psychologist) who refuses to accept any version of the page other than their own, despite the additions being disputed by two editors. As I said in my edit summary reverting the collapse, the RfC is about whether the claims should be included in Wikivoice, and the collapsed discussion is about whether the sources at hand can support said claims in Wikivoice! Hatting the section leaves the discussion there, and makes it clear that further travel down that path won't be productive. That is what hats are used for. - The purpose of a public discussion board is to share ideas for anybody's use in forming their own opinion, not just the person being responded to—I suspect you're well-aware of this. By collapsing a discussion, especially with a comment that labels it as off-topic, its visibility to others is significantly diminished, inhibiting the fair development of consensus among the page's viewers.
