The '''Barai''' are a ‘’’BRAHMIN ‘’’Hindu caste found in Uttar Pradesh, India. The people of this community mainly uses "Chaurasia" as surname (or BARAI) This is to the effect that the first BARAI was a BRAHMAN , whom God detected in a flagrant case of lying to his brother and underperforming ritual. His sacred thread (JANEU)was confiscated and, being planted in the ground, grew up into the first betel vine, which he was set to tend. " because the thread was confesticated barai stopped performing rituals and went of doing other activities like some of them became warriors and are called Kashyap Rajput, somvanshi Rajput. Various castes and gotra claim lineage from BARAI chaurishi, some of the surnames used are Modi, Jaiswal, Kashyap, Rishi, brahmachari , chaurishi, Tiwari, somvanshi, nag, naga etc. This can be said that people of this caste have successfully settled themselves now within various varnas according to Indian caste system but they have their ancestral lineage from the first (BRAHMIN) varna in varna system which brahmin. The BARAI( Chaurasia) are considered direct descendants of saint Chaurishi and were in general category till 2006 , currently some sub castes of this community are put under OBC category in several state also because the section of them is economically, or educationally backward, although they claim and enjoy good social status and standing
