Henry Kissinger died in his home in Kent, Connecticut, on November 29, 2023, at the age of 100. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Maginnes Kissinger; two children, David and Elizabeth; and five grandchildren. His death was announced by Kissinger Associates, his consulting firm, which also stated that the funeral would be private and would be followed by a memorial service in New York City.

United States:

• The president Joe Biden, stated:

"I’ll never forget the first time I met Dr. Kissinger. I was a young Senator, and he was Secretary of State – giving a briefing on the state of the world. Throughout our careers, we often disagreed. And often strongly. But from that first briefing – his fierce intellect and profound strategic focus was evident. Long after retiring from government, he continued to offer his views and ideas to the most important policy discussion across multiple generations. Jill and I send our condolences to his wife Nancy, his children Elizabeth and David, his grandchildren, and all those who loved him."

• The former president George W. Bush stated:

"America has lost one of the most dependable and distinctive voices on foreign affairs with the passing of Henry Kissinger. I have long admired the man who fled the Nazis as a young boy from a Jewish family, then fought them in the United States Army. When he later became Secretary of State, his appointment as a former refugee said as much about his greatness as it did America's greatness. He worked in the Administrations of two presidents and counseled many more. I am grateful for that service and advice, but I am most grateful for his friendship. Laura and I will miss his wisdom, his charm, and his humor. And we will always be thankful for the contributions of Henry Kissinger."

• The New York Yankees Twitter account posted:

"The Yankees are profoundly saddened by the passing of former United States [sic] Henry Kissinger, who performed varied and vital diplomatic and advisory roles throughout his distinguished career. A lifelong friend of the Yankees organization, he was a frequent welcome guest of the Steinbrenner family at Yankee Stadium. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed."

Rolling Stone ran an obituary titled "Henry Kissinger, War Criminal Beloved by America's Ruling Class, Finally Dies" and the front page of HuffPost labeled him "The Beltway Butcher". Writing for The Intercept, Nick Turse described him as "a diplomat responsible for millions of deaths". Due to his controversial legacy, the announcement of Kissinger's death was met with widespread celebrations on social media. Misplaced Pages user "Asticky" who first noted Kissinger's death gained attention on the site, was called an 'instant legend'.

International

• Chile: Chilean ambassador to the United States Juan Gabriel Valdés called Kissinger "a man whose historical brilliance could never conceal his profound moral wretchedness."
• China: Xi Jinping stated: "The Chinese people never forget their old friends, and Sino-U.S. relations will always be linked with the name of Henry Kissinger".
• European Union: The European Council President Charles Michel called Kissinger a "strategist with attention to the smallest detail" and "A kind human and a brilliant mind who, over 100 years, shaped the destinies of some of the most important events of the century."
• France: The French President Emmanuel Macron called to Kissinger "A Giant in the History"
• Germany: The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated: "The world has lost a great diplomat".
• Israel: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he "had the privilege of meeting Dr. Kissinger on numerous occasions, the most recent being just two months ago in New York. Each meeting with him was not just a lesson in diplomacy but also a masterclass in statesmanship. His understanding of the complexities of international relations and his unique insights into the challenges facing our world were unparalleled."
• Italy: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that "it has been a privilege to have recently engaged with him on various issues on the international agenda."
• Japan: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida praised his "significant contributions to the regional peace and stability"
• Russia: The Russian President Vladimir Putin mourned the death of Kissinger, saying in a telegram to Kissinger's widow Nancy that he was a "wise and farsighted statesman".
• United Kingdom: The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, stated: "I had the great pleasure of spending time with Dr Kissinger at No10 earlier this year. I learned so much from him, from studying his work as a student to reading his most recent books as Prime Minister. Henry had a great affinity for and understanding of the UK, with many friends and admirers here. He was a titan of international diplomacy who led a remarkable life. Right until his 100th year, he was a source of great wisdom on subjects from geopolitics to AI. Our thoughts are with his family."
