''D. tropicensis'' was first named by Rebecca Schmeisser McKean in ]. The ] is derived from the name of the ], in which the two specimens of ''D. tropicensis'' were found. It is known from the ] ] V10046, an almost complete, well-preserved {{convert|3.2|m|ft|1}} long ] including the most of the ] and from the referred specimen MNA V9431, fragmentary ]l elements. It was collected by the ] from a single locality within the Tropic Shale of ], dating to the early ] stage of the early ], about 93.5-91 ]. ''D. tropicensis'' extends the known stratigraphic range for ''Dolichorhynchops'' back by approximately 7 million years.<ref name=D.tropicensis>{{Harvnb|Schmeisser McKean|2011}}</ref> Previously three additional polycotylid taxa, '']'', '']'' and '']'', have been named from the same formation, two of which are currently ] to the ].<ref name="Albright, 2007">{{Harvnb|Albright III|Gillette|Titus|2007b}}</ref> A 2023 study assigns ''D. tropicensis'' to a new genus, ''Scalamagnus''.<ref name=Martinectes /> |

The holotype is associated with 289 ]s, which is unusual in comparison to most polycotylid skeletons that generally lack gastroliths. Ranging from less than 0.1 grams to 18.5 grams, the total mass of the gastroliths was about 518 grams. About three-quarters of the stones weighed less than 2 grams, with the mean mass and median mass of the stones respectively estimated at 1.9 grams and 0.8 grams. The gastroliths had high mean value and variability in sphericity, suggesting that this individual was obtaining its stones from rivers located along the western side of the Western Interior Seaway.<ref>{{cite journal|first1=R.L.|last1=Schmeisser|first2=D.D.|last2=Gillette|year=2009|title=Unusual occurrence of gastroliths in a polycotylid plesiosaur from the Upper Cretaceous Tropic Shale, southern Utah|journal=PALAIOS|volume=24|issue=7 |pages=453–459|doi=10.2110/palo.2008.p08-085r|bibcode=2009Palai..24..453S |s2cid=128969768 }}</ref> |
