Welcome to my Talk Page | ||
If we have a difference of opinion, I'm open to discussing it if the issue is meaningful, significant and worth my time. I ignore comments containing hyperbole, profanity, nonsense, attacks, and attitudes/behaviors I personally find offensive; I also ignore ones that I don't think are worth the time to respond. If you do not like this, click here. I have very strong feelings about the importance of notability, policies and guidelines, sources and evidence. Best wishes from Los Angeles, // Timothy :: talk |

What are outlines good for?
Timothy,
There seems to be ignorance and confusion at AfDs, and in general discussions, as to the purposes of outlines. Like, what they are for, how they are used, and so on. I'm trying to update the outline guideline and WikiProject page to address these problems and issues, and I'm reaching out to you to learn about your perceptions and attitudes toward outlines.
So, with that in mind, and out of curiosity...
Why did you create the Outline of the Israel–Hamas war?
- How do you think it will improve Misplaced Pages?
- How do you imagine Misplaced Pages users will make use of it?
How do you use outlines?
Why not just use categories instead?
If an editor said to you that readers can navigate just fine from the main article on a subject and that outlines are just redundant, what would your answer be?
What are the biggest problems that outines have?
What else do you think about outlines?
I look forward to your responses.
Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 06:59, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- Great questions, I want to think on them for a bit to give a better reply, and I may answer the questions in parts, to help give better feedback.
- I was thinking about you recently, I have a simple Python script that gathers items in a cat name you have copied into your clipboard and formats them eg: *Name of article/n and outputs to the clipboard to easily paste into an article. I use Visual Studio Code to create articles, so this works well for me. I was going to add it to a git repo, if you would find this helpful I can send you the link. I have a few others, but they have to be customized for the job at hand atm. Fair warning, they work well, but I am definitely a hack not a pro :)
- Hope you are well, greetings from Los Angeles. // Timothy :: talk 08:35, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- That reminds me, another question is: Why do we need outlines when we have search? — The Transhumanist 23:52, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for your participation late in this debate. Unfortunately there wasn't enough input in total to close as anything other than 'no consensus' given the way the debate had gone. Just a heads-up in case you want to consider an immediate re-nomination based on your rationale, I explicitly noted in my close that it was with NPASR. Outline draft tracker
Hey,
Here's a page I created for tracking outline drafts, that shows the date of the latest edit for each.
Drafts that haven't been edited in 6 months get deleted from draft space. This list lets us see if any drafts are getting close to the 6-month danger date. Once an edit is made to an outline draft, the date for it in this list automatically updates.
Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Outlines/Draft tracker.
I hope you find it useful.
Cheers, — The Transhumanist 08:09, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
Tech News: 2024-18
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for the following wikis: Azerbaijani Misplaced Pages, Bengali Misplaced Pages, German Misplaced Pages, Persian Misplaced Pages, Hebrew Misplaced Pages, Hindi Misplaced Pages, Indonesian Misplaced Pages, Korean Misplaced Pages, Dutch Misplaced Pages, Portuguese Misplaced Pages, Romanian Misplaced Pages, Thai Misplaced Pages, Turkish Misplaced Pages, Ukrainian Misplaced Pages, Vietnamese Misplaced Pages. These wikis participated to a test, where 50% of users got the new design, for one year. As this test gave positive results, the new design is deployed on these wikis as the default design. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at all wikis in the coming weeks.
- Seven new wikis have been created:
- You can now watch message groups/projects on Translatewiki.net. Initially, this feature will notify you of added or deleted messages in these groups.
- Dark mode is now available on all wikis, on mobile web for logged-in users who opt into the advanced mode. This is the early release of the feature. Technical editors are invited to check for accessibility issues on wikis. See more detailed guidelines.
Problems
- Kartographer maps can use an alternative visual style without labels, by using
mapstyle="osm"
. This wasn't working in previews, creating the wrong impression that it wasn't supported. This has now been fixed.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 April. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 May. It will be on all wikis from 2 May (calendar).

Administrators' newsletter – May 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2024).
[REDACTED] Oversight changes
- Phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship review has concluded. Several proposals have passed outright and will proceed to implementation, including creating a discussion-only period (3b) and administrator elections (13) on a trial basis. Other successful proposals, such as creating a reminder of civility norms (2), will undergo further refinement in Phase II. Proposals passed on a trial basis will be discussed in Phase II, after their trials conclude. Further details on specific proposals can be found in the full report.
- Partial action blocks are now in effect on the English Misplaced Pages. This means that administrators have the ability to restrict users from certain actions, including uploading files, moving pages and files, creating new pages, and sending thanks. T280531
- The arbitration case Conflict of interest management has been closed.
- This may be a good time to reach out to potential nominees to ask if they would consider an RfA.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 15,000 articles awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!
- Voting for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is open until 9 May 2024. Read the voting page on Meta-Wiki and cast your vote here!

Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for all wikis, except for Commons, Wikidata and most Wikipedias (a few have already received this design change). - Interface admins now have greater control over the styling of article components on mobile with the introduction of the
SiteAdminHelper
. More information on how styles can be disabled can be found at the extension's page. - Wikimedia Enterprise has added article body sections in JSON format and a curated short description field to the existing parsed Infobox. This expansion to the API is also available via Wikimedia Cloud Services.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 May. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 May. It will be on all wikis from 9 May (calendar).

Future changes
- A new service will be built to replace Extension:Graph. Details can be found in the latest update regarding this extension.
- Starting May 21, English Misplaced Pages and German Misplaced Pages will get the possibility to activate "Add a link". This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to all Wikipedias. These communities can activate and configure the feature locally.
