Gielinor (Jagex: /ˈɡɪ.lə.nɔːr/ GILL-in-or) is a fictional world in which the MMORPG RuneScape takes place. The game is also the setting for Old School RuneScape, as well as several games that appeared on FunOrb.
Gielinor comprises of several kingdoms, including Misthalin, Asgarnia, Kandarin and Morytania as well as other areas including the Wilderness, the Kharidian Desert, and the Troll and Fremennik Provinces. The layout of the universe resembles a deformed map of the real world, with some places made to resemble the actual locations: South America (Feldip Hills), Australia (Karamja), Africa (Kharidian Desert), Western Europe (Kingdom of Asgarnia), American Northeast (Kingdom of Kandarin), Eastern Europe (Kingdom of Misthalin), Asia (Morytania), American West (Tirannwn), Russia (Wilderness), Greenland (Miscellania).
The various kingdoms include a number of cities, including Lumbridge, Varrock, Falador, Ardougne (and West Ardougne), each with various native races and storylines that are revealed during quests.
Most of the surface is occupied by steppes, with few mountains, a large desert (Kharidian), ice (Wilderness), and some tropics (Karamja Island).
