Afroditi Latinopoulou (Template:Lang-el; born 29 April 1991) is a Greek politician, founder and leader of Voice of Reason party. She was elected as Member of the European Parliament in 2024 European Parliament election.
Life
Aphrodite Latinopoulou was born on April 29, 1991 in Thessaloniki. Her origin is from Evros a region from which she received the largest percentage of votes in the European elections. She was the first child of a religious family of teachers of secondary education. From almost her childhood, she was involved in tennis, a sport with which she won 15 Greek championships and 4 European championships. In 2010 it was "number 1067" in ranking of Women's Tennis Association.
Due to a serious injury her career in the sport ended in 2013.
She studied at the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and graduated in 2017. She joined ONNED and was appointed Secretary of the District in 2016.
Until her election to the European Parliament, Latinoupoulou practiced law as an employee in the legal department of a company.
Politics
Her first contact with politics took place in the Legislative Elections of 2019, when she stood as a candidate for MP in Thessaloniki with the New Democracy. She received 5,297 votes, finishing in 18th place out of a total of 20 candidates.
The first time she became known to the broader public was in June 2021 with a controversial post where she condemned, among many other things, women's unshaven legs and armpits, referring to unattractive beauty standards attempted to be imposed by minorities. This post caused many reactions (even from commercial brands like Dove (toiletries) and Veet ) in public discourse and even reached the Parliament, when it was submitted for comment by the government to the "Equality Committee of the Hellenic Parliament". The relevant authorities of the New Democracy party have expressed their strong disagreement with the content of the post, while a group of six former MPs of the party spoke of - "...a current hypocritical double-speak that, by turning a blind eye to sexist, phallocratic and ultra-conservative audiences, slides down 'trampist' paths, far from the spirit and practices, as well as from the ideological, spiritual and moral heritage of the party...."
This post was followed by other equally controversial ones such as her support for a fertility conference which was annuled due to political correctness as she stafed, her disagreement with the term femicide, the instrumentalization of the victims by the Left, such as the heroisation of Pavlos Fyssas mother or Zak Kostopoulos, her post against Giorgos Kapoutzidis and the extreme rightism of the LGBT community, where, as the article in TO VIMA newspaper says, "self-identification, paedophilia and incest were (deliberately) confused. The more pompous, the better.
In June 2021 another post about the obesity of a Greek TV presenter caused, apart from many discussions in the media and social media, the following announcement of the New Democracy: "The politician Afroditi Latinoopoulou has no office or position in the organizational chart of the New Democracy, neither at local nor at central level and will not be a candidate in the next national elections." Almost all the media perceived and reported the announcement of the New Democracy as the deletion of the politician, she pointed out that "...in my case no procedure was followed and of course no deletion was made, since no body met and no secretary signed any deletion decision. On the contrary, leaks were given to the New Democracy-controlled sites through circles that informed me that I would not be a candidate in the coming elections with the New Democracy party."
In August 2022, Afroditi Latinopoulou announced that she would join the "Patriotic Force for Change" a party of Konstantinos Bogdanos as Vice President. In March 2023 when Bogdanos, decided to cooperate for a joint election with the Patriots – Prodromos Emfietzoglou, Latinoupoulou disagreed and was removed from the coalition. On 23 March 2023 she founded her own party, "PATRIDA - Afroditi Latinoopoulou". However, by decision of the Supreme Civil and Criminal Court of Greece, to which Konstantinos Bogdanos appealed, her new party was excluded from participation in the elections of 21 May 2023 as it was considered that both the name and the symbol of the party were stolen from "Patriotic Force for Change".
On 25 May 2024, she announced the renaming of the party as the Voice of Reason - Afroditi Latinopoulou.
Latinopoulou's main political activity is focused on social media posts. This way has been considered successful as it has managed to give her publicity in the first place but also to attract an audience which eventually made her an MEP. In 2021 she had 32.243 followers on Facebook and 21.8K on X. 2022 had 50.000 followers on Instagram.
She has Margaret Thatcher as her political role model, but admires both Marine Le Pen and Georgia Meloni.
In June 2024, Latinopoulou along with Fredi Beleri and Galato Alexandraki was listed vy POLITICO among the 23 most kookiest new MEPs in the European Parliament.
