Ryan Wesley Routh is an American man who is suspected of having attempted to assassinate former U.S. president Donald Trump, who at the time was the presumptive Republican Party nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
On September 15, 2024, Secret Service agents shot a suspect who was hiding in some shrubs with a rifle at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. He fled the scene. Routh was later arrested. The incident occurred while former U.S. president Donald Trump was golfing at the club.
The motives of the suspect are still unknown, though officials believe he intended to shoot Trump.
Early life
In 2002 Routh was convicted of possessing a weapon of mass destruction (referring to a fully automatic machine gun). In December of that same year he was also arrested in Greensboro, North Carolina after a three-hour standoff with police.
