Ryan Wesley Routh is an American man who is suspected of having attempted to assassinate former U.S. president Donald Trump, who at the time was the presumptive Republican Party nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
On September 15, 2024, Secret Service agents shot a suspect who was hiding in some shrubs with a rifle at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. He fled the scene. Routh was later arrested as the potential suspect. The incident occurred while former U.S. president Donald Trump was golfing at the club.
The motives of the suspect are still unknown, though officials believe he intended to shoot Trump.
Early life
In December 2002 Routh was convicted of possessing a firearm, resisting, delaying and obstructing a law enforcement officer and driving with license revoked after a 3-hour stand off with police. He was pulled over during a traffic stop, put his hand on a gun and then drove to a nearby business, where he barricaded himself inside.
Routh claimed on his various social media accounts, as well as in 2022 interivews with The New York Times and Newsweek Romania, to have made supposed efforts to recruit soldiers to fight in the conflict. He also claimed to have fought in Ukraine.
In May 2024 Routh and his family moved from Greensboro, North Carolina to Hawaii.
