On September 27, 2024, the Israeli Air Force targeted the Hezbollah central headquarters in the Dahieh suburb of Beirut, reportedly aiming for Hassan Nasrallah, secretary-general of the Iran-backed group. The strike employed 5,000-pound bunker buster bombs, in order to destroy the headquarters, which is reportedly located underground in the Hezbollah stronghold. Nasrallah's condition following the attack remains uncertain, although sources linked to Hezbollah reported that he is safe. The attack killed at least two people and wounded over 76 others.
This attack followed Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to the United Nations, in which he reaffirmed Israel's commitment to its campaign against Hezbollah. Earlier in September, Hezbollah suffered what has been described as some of the group's most severe setbacks, including the 17 and 18 September explosions of its handheld communication devices and the assassination of Ibrahim Aqil, commander of the elite Redwan Force. Earlier in July another senior Hezbollah military leader Fuad Shukr was also assassinated in Beirut.
Background
See also: Israel–Hezbollah conflict (2023–present) and 2024 Lebanon pager explosionsA day after Hamas' October 7 attacks on Israel, Hezbollah joined the conflict in support of Hamas by firing on northern Israeli towns and other Israeli positions. Since then, Hezbollah and Israel have been involved in cross-border military exchanges that have displaced entire communities in Israel and Lebanon, and caused significant damage to buildings and land along the border.
Hezbollah has violated UNSCR 1701, which mandated only the Lebanese army and UNIFIL be armed in southern Lebanon, by fortifying the area, storing rockets in civilian sites, building tunnels into Israel, and obstructing UNIFIL's access. Hezbollah has stated it will continue attacking Israel until Israel halts its operations in Gaza, while Israel demands that Hezbollah implement UNSC 1701 and withdraw its forces north of the Litani River. Diplomatic efforts, led by U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein and France, have so far been unsuccessful in resolving the conflict.
On the same month, the Security Cabinet of Israel established a new war objective: the safe return of displaced residents to the north. This goal was added to the two existing objectives: dismantling Hamas and securing the release of hostages taken during the 7 October attacks. Netanyahu also rejected a 21-day ceasefire stating, "We are continuing to strike Hezbollah with full force". Since 23 September 2024, Israel has conducted hundreds of attacks targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, in an operation it codenamed Northern Arrows. The IDF reported that Israeli aircraft targeted 1,600 Hezbollah positions, destroying cruise missiles, as well as long- and short-range rockets and attack drones. Prior to the strikes, Israel ordered citizens in Lebanon to evacuate from buildings that store weapons or host command centers.
Attack
On September 27, 2024, Israel conducted a significant airstrike on Hezbollah's central headquarters located in the Haret Hreik neighborhood, in the Dahieh suburb of Beirut. Media reports suggested that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was the intended target of the airstrike. According to the state owned National News Agency, the raids were a belt of fire that extended from the outskirts of Burj al-Barajneh, reaching Haret Hreik.
The strike occurred shortly after Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations' General Assembly, and vowed that Israel's campaign against Hezbollah would continue. The IDF employed an advanced 5,000-pound bunker buster bomb that was created in 2021.
There was no immediate information on casualties in the strike. IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated that the target was Hezbollah's main headquarters, located beneath residential buildings. Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV reported that four buildings were reduced to rubble as a result of the explosion, which was so powerful that tremors were felt up to 30 kilometers north of Beirut. Ambulances were seen heading to the scene, accompanied by wailing sirens. Footage taken shortly after the explosion revealed a large crater.
Aftermath
Nasrallah's condition
A source linked to Hezbollah stated to Reuters that Nasrallah is alive, while the Iranian Tasnim News Agency reported that he is safe. A senior Iranian security official also noted to Reuters that Iran is in the process of verifying his condition.
Responses
According to The New York Times, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, convened an emergency meeting of the Supreme National Security Council at his residence.
