The New Order: Last Days of Europe (often abbreviated to TNO) is an alternate history mod for the grand strategy came Hearts of Iron IV, developed in 2016 by the game studio Paradox Interactive. It is set in 1962, during an alternate three-way Cold War between Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and the United States.
Gameplay
Main article: Hearts of Iron IV § GameplayThe gameplay of The New Order is almost exactly the same as the base Hearts of Iron IV, however with added countries, leaders, and decisions. The player takes control of a country and is in charge of that country's politics, industry, and diplomatic relations. The New Order does not change the core gameplay, but it does change the setting and adds lots of new content. New super events such as the reunification of Russia or the South African War were added, along with new leaders such as Valery Sablin and Harold Macmillian.
Setting
The game is set in an Axis victory of the Second World War, with most of Eurasia divided up between Germany (Called the Unity Pakt) and Japan (Called the Co-Prosperity Sphere). The United States leads the Organization of Free Nations (OFN), an alliance between the remaining allied powers against the Germans and Japanese. Neither Great Britain or the Soviet Union exist; the Nazis established a puppet state in Britain; while the European portion of the Soviet Union is controlled by the Reichskommissariat Moskowien. The remainder of Russia is splintered, each group wanting to reunite the nation under its own banner. The Mediterranean formed a fragile Triumvirate between the Iberian Union, Kingdom of Italy, and Republic of Turkey.
Release and reception
The New Order released to the Steam Workshop on March 27, 2021, during the second spring of COVID-19 lockdowns. The mod was praised for its rich storytelling, immersion, and esoteric atmosphere. The outlet Kotaku said the game was "one of the largest, most ambitious, and best-known HOI4 mods to date."
