In the World Series, a sweep refers to a team winning the first four games in a best-of-seven format. There have been 21 sweeps in World Series history, the most recent being in 2012. American League teams responsible for thirteen of the sweeps, with the New York Yankees account for more than half of those, with eight. The National League is responsible for eight sweeps, with the New York/San Francisco Giants being responsible for three of those.
The most recent sweep occured in the 2012 World Series, when the San Francisco Giants swept the Detroit Tigers.
