Mahtra War was an uprising of the Mahtra estate (now in Rapla County, 60 km from Tallinn) in Estonia, Russian Empire in 1858.
The participants of the uprising were exiled to Siberia.
Historical context
In Estland the serfdom was abolished in 1819, however the land was not redistributed among the peasants and the corvée labor was preserved. The law of 1856 pestponed the expected abolition of the corvee for 10 years, which sparkled the revolt.
