Kosove and his partner Broderick Johnson wrote the business plan for Alcon in 1995 and the company was formed two years later with the financial backing of Frederick W. Smith, the founder and chairman of FedEx. . Kosove and Johnson envisioned a truly independent film company that would finance films without capital from the major studios but would release its films via an ongoing studio distribution arrangement. They believed that such a structure would allow Alcon to become both a streamlined, non-bureaucratic hub for filmmakers looking for an artistic friendly environment, and a profitable business enterprise that would be able to maximize the commercial potential and revenues on each of its films .
Kosove and Johnson’s business plan has proven prescient as Alcon, now almost 30 years old, has generated over $3.5B in revenue and is one of the industry’s most enduring independent media companies.
