Percussionist Michael J. Hinton attended San Francisco Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School, receiving a Masters Degree in Musical Performance from Juilliard. Mr. Hinton is notable for having decades of experience as a performer, working on many popular Broadway productions, including “Les Miserables," Sunday in the Park With George and “Miss Saigon.” Mr. Hinton toured extensively with Liza Minnelli. According to his website, he has also performed with The Grateful Dead on numerous occasions and is considered a Grateful Dead family member.

Along with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, Hinton is credited, co-wrote and performed part of the soundtrack for the film Apocolypse Now. Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann praised Hart's and Hinton's extraordinary rudimentary drumming abilities saying, "Michael Hinton was there. Michael Hinton and Mickey are, like, extraordinary rudimental drummers. They actually won the national rudimental competition one year, which is no easy feat, and so I was introduced to both of them. I was watching Count Basie, and I went outside. I didn’t play. Mickey and Mike did, and blew my mind."

Now, retired from performing, he is a percussion and piano teacher and manages the website https://musicschoolnj.com/.

Currently working on his memoir, he is featured along with his wife, accomplished violinist Mineko Yajima in a video titled, Music, Minkeo, and Me, an extensive 2-hour biographical documentary video about Hinton's career.
