American politician

Kent Lovern is an American prosecutor and politician from Wisconsin who has served as the Milwaukee County District Attorney since January 6, 2025. Lovern was elected without opposition in the 2024 general election, running as a Democrat. Prior to his election as district attorney, Lovern was a career prosecutor and the longtime chief deputy to his predecessor John Chisholm.

Life and career

Lovern was raised in Wichita, Kansas and Sioux City, Iowa. He is a graduate of Briar Cliff University and the University of Iowa College of Law, receiving his law degree from the latter in 1995. Lovern was a criminal defense attorney in Racine, Wisconsin before serving as an assistant district attorney in Milwaukee County under District Attorney E. Michael McCann from 1998 to 2007. He worked in the Firearms Enforcement Unit led by supervising assistant district attorney John T. Chisholm. Chisholm succeeded McCann as district attorney in 2007 and appointed Lovern as a deputy district attorney.

In 2008, Lovern was promoted to chief deputy district attorney, the second-ranked position in the office. In 2021, he was one of five finalists for appointment as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin by President Joe Biden, who ultimately appointed former interim United States Attorney Gregory Haanstad.

Election

On January 10, 2024, Lovern announced his candidacy for district attorney following Chisholm's announcement that he would not seek reelection. Chisholm endorsed Lovern's candidacy as did multiple Milwaukee elected leaders including U.S. representative Gwen Moore and Mayor Cavalier Johnson. Lovern did not face opposition in the Democratic primary in August or the general election in November. He assumed office as district attorney on January 6, 2025.
