Matthew Alan "Matt" Beat (born November 6, 1981), better known online as Mr. Beat, is an American internet personality, educator, and author.
Originally a social studies teacher in Kansas, Beat began publishing YouTube videos in 2006 under the Electric Needle Room channel name, before moving to the current Mr. Beat account in 2009, and beginning his uploads in 2011. Beat's videos focus on politics, economics, geography, and history, primarily in the United States. In 2024, Beat received his golden play button for surpassing 1 million subscribers.
Early life
Matthew Alan Beat was born on November 6, 1981 in Topeka, Kansas and was raised Catholic. He went to the University of Kansas, University of Nebraska Omaha, and Emporia State University for college.
YouTube career
Beat originally made videos for his indie pop band Electric Needle Room, where he first uploaded in 2006. He also owns the comedy skit channel Zany Time.
He created his YouTube channel in August 2009, though he did not start uploading anything until January 2011. His oldest videos were originally only intended to show his actual students in his classroom, and the original channel name was "Mr. Beat's Social Studies Channel". Once the videos took off, he expanded his content. He now runs numerous video series such as Compared, Supreme Court Briefs, and Presidential Elections In American History, among others. His most popular series is Compared, a geography series which compares two places around the world.
Beat is known to be an enthusiast for United States presidential history, with songs about all of the former American presidents and a series chronicling every presidential election in American history. He also occasionally creates historical parody songs and original history songs for his band Electric Needle Room, an indie pop band that Beat plays in, occasionally with other people. Additionally, Beat runs a second channel, "The Beat Goes On" where he mainly focuses on videos on other topics such as music, films, and cultural trends. He also co-hosts the podcast "Jobsolete" with Helen Hong which explores jobs of the past. Mr. Beat has notably shown himself to be very critical of conservative YouTube channel PragerU and has made videos reprehending it, including a 7-hour livestream. Beat is known for his dry humor and comedic creativity.
Personal life
He has a wife, Shannon, and two children, as well as a brother, with whom he maintains the music-oriented channel Electric Needle Room. Beat currently lives in Lawrence, Kansas.
Educational career
Until 2021, Beat was a high school social studies teacher, teaching various subjects from grades 7 to 12, when he decided to pursue a career as a full time YouTuber.
While educating, Beat petitioned in 2015 for former President Barack Obama to visit the school he teaches at, but was not successful.
