Gyakuten Saiban 4 (逆転裁判 4, lit. "Turnabout Trial 4") is an attorney simulation video game for the Nintendo DS. It is the fourth video game in the Gyakuten Saiban series (Ace Attorney in America). Unlike the Japanese release of Gyakuten Saiban Yomigaeru Gyakuten and Gyakuten Saiban 2 for DS, Gyakuten Saiban 4 does not include an English translation.

Gyakuten Saiban 4 is also the first game in the series to be developed specifically for the DS as opposed to a port of the game from the Game Boy Advance version. As such, many of the techniques utilizing the DS touch screen and microphone features that were employed in the fifth case created specifically for the DS port of of the first Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney are a fundamental part of Gyakuten Saiban 4, as seen in trailers for the game.

Gyakuten Saiban 4 has been massively successful in Japan, selling 500,000 copies since its release on April 12.

Details

Gyakuten Saiban 4 (which takes place chronologically seven years after Gyakuten Saiban 3) will be the first game in the series that will not feature Phoenix Wright (Ryuichi Naruhodo in Japanese) as the main character, though it won't be the first time a different attorney will be playable. Rather, the new main attorney is named Housuke Odoroki, a 22-year-old lawyer fresh out of school. Not much is known about him, though the recently revealed trailer from the Tokyo Game Show reveals that he seems much more confident than Phoenix. His legal partner is a magician named Minuki, his mentor is named Garyu Kirihito, and his prosecuting rival is Kirihito's younger brother and famous rock star, Garyu Kyōya. Not much more is known about them at this time.

The December 2006 issue of Famitsu explains that the bracelet on Odoroki's left arm can be used to "zoom in on witnesses to gather information about them", and is called the Minuku System. It is used primarily in court to look for motions or actions made by witnesses that show nervousness, like playing with one's fingers. The move even comes with a new phrase, "Soko da!" which in English means "It's there!"

A promotional video was recently released that showed more detailed aspects of the game, such as a few new witnesses, locations and some gameplay. Footage of the Minuku System was shown, as well as a few examples of forensics, such as fingerprint scanning and making casts of footprints for evidence.

A limited edition of the game was made available for the Japanese release on April 12, 2007. It includes branded headphones, a Gyakuten Saiban Dictionary on a DS card, and a series highlights DVD.

Main characters

Housuke Odoroki (王泥喜法介, Odoroki Hōsuke) (age 22)
The new protagonist of the series. A confident young man with "a passionate heart burning red." Can point out lies by examining body language.
Minuki Naruhodo (成歩堂みぬき, Naruhodō Minuki) (age 15)
Odoroki's assistant and Phoenix's adopted daughter. A magician who shares the gift that Odoroki possesses.
Phoenix Wright / Ryuichi Naruhodo (成歩堂龍一, Naruhodō Ryūichi) (age 33)
The former protagonist of the series. He is no longer an attorney but instead plays the piano in a restaurant called Borscht, in addition to owning an entertainment empire. Although no longer a lawyer, he helps Odoroki out.
Kirihito Garyu (牙琉霧人, Garyū Kirihito) (age 32)
Odoroki's mentor and supposedly Phoenix's good friend. Is the brother of the game's main prosecutor, Garyu Kyōya.
Kyōya Garyu (牙琉響也, Garyū Kyōya) (age 24)
The game's main prosecutor, and Garyu's younger brother. He has a popular rock band on the side called "Garyu Wave." Became a prosecutor at 17. Unlike his predecessors, he is surprisingly honest even when he is first introduced.
Ema Skye / Akane Houzuki (宝月茜, Hōzuki Akane) (age 25)
A detective in Criminal Affairs, Ema is Odoroki's main contact in the poilice department. She has been acquainted with Phoenix before, as he cleared her sister of murder 9 years ago; after said case she left to study forensics abroad.

Case-specific characters

Winston Payne / Takefumi Auchi (亜内武文, Auchi Takefumi) (Age 61)
A prosecutor who once unsuccessfully tried to charge Phoenix Wright with murder and then lost cases against him twice when Phoenix became a defense lawyer. He had been waiting to pay Phoenix his 'last respects' by prosecuting him again. He does not have a very good court prescence (Phoenix once had trouble remembering who he was) but now has grown out the hair at the back of his head, which he often flicks. (For the most part though, he's still bald.)
Sakai Masaka (逆居雅香, Masaka Sakai)
A witness to the murder of Kagerō Urafushi and a waitress of the Russian restaurant 'Borsht'. She seems to have a dislike for Phoenix and witnessed that it was he who killed the victim.

Turnabout Trump

The case begins with a scene in which two people are playing cards. One person wins the hand then someone picks up a bottle and slams it onto the other persons head, killing them. We then see the same place later, with a man on a mobile phone asking someone for help as the victim lies on the table, dead.

The scene then changes to Odoroki and Garyu Kirihito discussing the beginning of the trial for the murder in the introduction. This is also Odoroki's first case. Odoroki then meets the defendant, who knew Garyu Kirihito for many years. When the trial begins, we find out from The Judge that the defendant is Phoenix Wright and that he is been charged with the murder of Kagerō Urafushi, a world traveler.

Turnabout Street Corner

In a bizarre turn of events beginning with Phoenix being hit by a car and injured, Odoroki must chase down a thief who has been stealing various women's panties as well as defend a member of the mob, Takita Kitaki, in a murder case. Odoroki's first case with Minuki, Ema Skye, and Garyu Kyōya.

Turnabout Serenade

After the events of Turnabout Street Gang, Odoroki, Ema, and Minuki are invited to one of Kyōya's concerts. Although the initial concert goes fine, the encore is fouled when Kyōya's guitar catches on fire. Moments after the concert, however, Ema, Minuki, and Odoroki hear two gunshots go off and find a singer's manager dying. Odoroki is forced to defend teenage pianist Maki Tobayu in the case, while Kyōya again prosecutes.

Turnabout Heir

When a painter is murdered in his studio, Odoroki must unravel the mysteries behind both the murder, and Phoenix's final case as a defense attorney 7 years ago. This case also introduces a jury trial, the first in the series. Template:Endspoilers
