The National flag of Pakistan was designed by Ameer-ud-Din Khidwai, and was adopted three days before independence on August 11, 1947. The green section represents Muslims, while the white section represents non-Muslim minorities. The crescent represents progress; the star symbolizes light and knowledge.

A common apellation for the flag is subz hilali parcham (Urdu for "green flag with the crescent").
