The Force is a mystical power which is the object of the mystical Jedi religion in George Lucas's Star Wars films. People with the Jedi 'gift' are able to tap into the Force to perform acts of great skill and agility. It seems to be a form of psychic ability, as Jedi have been seen to read minds, use telepathy, telekinetically lift and move objects, and to sense where objects/people are without seeing them. When Alderan was destroyed near the start of the original Star Wars movie, Obi Wan Kenobi sensed 'a great disturbance in the force, as if millions of souls cried out and were silenced forever' (or something like that).

Jedi are greatly concerned with keeping the Force in balance and not using too much power, or slipping to the 'dark side' of the force.
