Mudkip is one of the three Hoenn starter pokémon (the other two are Treecko and Torchic).
Name Origin
Mudkip's name might be derived from the words mud and kipper, but there may be a more accurate name origin.
Pokédex definition
Ruby: "The fin on Mudkip's head acts as highly sensitive radar. Using this fin to sense movement of water and air, this Pokémon can determine what is taking place around it without using its eyes."
In-game details
Picking this pokémon as a starter is categorized as choosing a "Medium" difficulty level for the game because the first gym leader uses pokémon whose type is weak against Mudkip's and the later-in-the-game Granite Cave has some pokémon who are also weak against Mudkips powerful water blasts. However, it is important to note that the third gym leader uses pokémon that could devastate even the best-trained Mudkip if it hasen't evolved into Marshtomp.
In the anime
In the pokémon anime, Brock (who travels with Ash Ketchum) has a Mudkip. Mudkip is one of the parental figure Pokémon on Brock's team, and, along with Ash's Pikachu, is one of the Pokémon leaders when the Pokémon are away from their trainers.
