Jeffree Star
Musical artist

Jeffree Star (born Jeffrey Steininger on November 15 1985) is an Internet celebrity, DJ, model, artist, musician, fashion designer and singer-songwriter. Known for his "brazenly sexual and openly subversive" genderfuck appearance as a gender-bending cross-dresser who dubs himself "Queen of the Internet" and "CUNT:Queen of the Beautifuls" he gained notoriety on social networking website MySpace. While channeling his obsessive compulsive leanings into a career as make-up artist and music video model for Hollywood celebrities he laid the groundwork for his music career and started his own fashion line.

Biography

Early Life

Jeffree Star stated that discovered he was gay in fifth grade. Star stated in an interview. His father died when he was younger, so Star was left alone when his working model mom went on assignments. Star began experimenting with his mother's makeup at a young age." Having convinced his mom to let him wear make-up to school in junior high, Star has experimented with make-up and modeling ever since.

Early career

Star's early career was as an underage gender-bending club kid who wore outrageous make-up, original fashions, dyed his hair in day-glo colors and cross-dressed ensuring he got generous amounts of attention wherever he went. In interviews he talks about this was simply an extension of his self-expression that he did throughout his school years. Because he wore women's clothes, make-up and jewelry "in school the girls all wanted to be my friend, and the boys secretly wanted to mess around with me, so I didn’t get beat up for being weird." Star's obsessive compulsive disorder as a child pushed him into playing with his mother's makeup and clothes and "eventually this quiet desire for beauty got louder and louder."

On weekends, Star used a fake ID to attend Hollywood clubs dressed in "outlandish mini dresses and nine inch high heels" where celebrities would tap his expertise and soon contracted him for make-up work at their homes and in videos even hiring Star as a model. His relentless weekend partying at clubs and giving make-up advice paid off when seemingly everyone knew his name, wanted pictures with him and wanted to know where he was going, what he was doing and with whom.

Make-up and modeling

Star's imaging including his make-up, fashion sense and modeling work is one of the keys to his success. In an interview with Music Plus TV, Star stated that when he was 15 years old he got a fake ID, and went to clubs and soon his shocking image was becoming recognized in the world of make-up. He quickly became a "makeup artist for music and porn videos."

Star was also the first of his friends with high-speed Internet so he channeled his time into online forums and posted outrageous photos of himself gaining a cult-like following including admirers who sent gifts including a high-end camera. For one photo-shoot he actually slit his wrists, photographer Heidi Calvert "wanted me to hold a gun in my mouth, and I was like, fuck that. I took a razor and slashed my wrists. So I got a weird cult following.”

With high concept photoshoots like "bulimia as a beauty shot, histrionic costuming, dreamy lighting, and makeup" Star's model-work "are on a par with tear-sheets from a Conde Nast periodical."

On August 1, 2006, Los Angeles's GLBT Frontiers Newsmagazine featured Star on his first magazine cover.

In February 2007, Star appeared on the cover of Imago and made a guest appearance at the Miss Mannequin Imago Fashion Show and Imagozine launch party in Barrie, Ontario.

On March 16, 2007, "dangerous boyfriend thief and makeup slut" Star was one of the featured runway models for BOXeight's production of designer Jared Gold’s flamboyant Quiet Army show billed as “the wildest front row in all of Fashion Week.” "Gold has shown to the underground for many years, cultivating a cult following with such ephemeral themes as light and shadows and aural vacuums," this show's theme was Mormon chic effectively using the Los Angeles Theater as a backdrop during L.A. Fashion Week. Star "worked it like Wonder Woman."

Star is now an in-demand Los Angeles make-up artist who has worked with AFI's singer Davey Havok, Paris Hilton, Kelly Osbourne and Jessicka from the band Scarling amongst others. He's appeared in several music videos including Good Charlotte's The River and Godhead's Push.

MySpace celebrity

Myspace has become a new frontier for emerging artists and bandsand Star has used the forum to launch his music and fashion design careers as well as blog about his life while making social commentary on "self-image and confidence," fame, beauty and life. Using the online name of "Cunt" and a "cyanide-laced wit in his online rants" to attract attention, Star had built up fan bases on a bunch of different websites but convinced them all to join him on MySpace so his friend-base started at 30,000, was recognized as Myspace.com's highest connected profile personality by November 2006, and has grown to over 600,000 as of July 2007 with each new photo shoot getting some 50,000 comments when posted making him "one of MySpace's most identifiable names." Star's "out-there personality, charisma and ability to build an audience are undeniable." He "averages between one to three thousand MySpace comments a day."

Star has gained fame as one of the most popular unsigned artists with the daily rankings placing him in the top tier with his profile, where visitors get news and listen to his music, with over 13 million music listens in the first eleven months and being viewed over 22 million times as of July 2007. He now attends shows, events and concerts and kids flock to him even if some still consider him a "B-lister." He gives out more autographs than bands and takes photos with as many kids as he can. Star's MySpace music has an impressive 25 million listens off his debut release and "he’s been flown around the country for one-nighters at trendy clubs. hes a hot fuck<333 In his MySpace blog that doubles as his homepage Star shares with his vast fanbase, "straight and gay, girls and boys, from California to Connecticut" of "14-year-old girls cute straight guys" openly. "I'm not trying to be a girl or a guy, I'm just me. I'm trying to give everyone the confidence to be who they are and not be afraid to try new things." Because he is known through MySpace, his fame is not confined to any particular geographic area but shows up in locations like Ireland, Portugal, and areas where spanish is spoken.

J-Star fashions

United States' largest "subculture for suburbanites" retail chain Hot Topic contracted with Star to sell his J-Star tees and panties in their Everything about the Music! section in its 600-store network. The Fortune 500 fashion and merchandising company specializes in marketing Pop-culture items. In May 2007 as reported in Europe, the best selling item at the Utah-based trendy popular clothing retailer Black Chandelier was a limited edition 'Jeffree Star' T-shirt.

Music career

"Despite not possessing the most ideal voice" Star's gift for aesthetic beauty helps his music as well as "explicit, catchy lyrics." Star's humble beginnings as a DIY electronica and hip-hop musician started when he befriended Peaches' drummer who encouraged him to make music and ended up giving him some beats to work with. Writing “really crazy lyrics” to rap beats Star's first two tracks Straight Boys and We Want Cunt, named in tribute to his former screen name CUNT: Queen of the Beautifuls, were co-written with Motley Crue's Sam Maloney who played drums for Courtney Love and the Eagles of Death Metal. Star asked MySpace co-founder Tom to convert his page into a music page.

On Nov 1, 2006 Star performed on the same bill as Los Angeles's Dirty Sanchez at the LA bar Key Club’s post-Halloween show.

Star has toured with electro rocker Peaches including a December 14, 2006 show at LA's Avalon as part of a triple bill with Peaches and Whitey.

In February of 2007 the "rapper and songwriter wrapped up his sold-out Canadian mini-tour" with best friend Raquel Reed.

Plastic Surgery Slumber Party” debuted March 20, 2007 at No. 1 on iTune’s dance charts and "has consistently topped the iTunes dance charts at #1, hovering high above household names such as Justin Timberlake and Cascada."

On June 24 2007, Jeffree was banned from Toronto's Gay Pride Parade for punching a female fan in the face after spectators standing near her threw bottles onstage.

During the summer of 2007 Star was advertised as a part of the multi-artist True Colors Tour 2007, which traveled through 15 cities in the United States and Canada. The tour, sponsored by the GLBT Logo channel, began on June 8, 2007 to coincide with Pride month. Profits from the tour benefited the Human Rights Campaign as well as PFLAG and The Matthew Shepard Foundation. Though he was advertised as a special guest to perform on several West Coast dates Star did not appear.

Star's "Plastic Surgery Slumber Party" track will appear on the August 7, 2007 Tommy Boy release of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors tour compilation. Featuring ten tracks from ten of the artists the compilation will benefit the Human Rights Campaign, an organization that fights for "civil rights for GLBTQ people."

Buzznet.com princess

On March 28, 2007 Star, wearing a "gold-and-diamond Paul Wall–crafted grill," was a front row "celebutante" at Project Runway's winner Jeffrey Sebelia showcase of his Cosa Nostra designs at LA's 2121 Lofts where he shared details of Buzznet.com’s recent “Queen Needs a Princess Contest.” The "social-networking, pop-culture and music-news site" offers integrated photoblog and videoblog capabilities so Star, being media-savvy and used to being photographed was the prize as the winner was flown cross-country "for a day of femme-licious fun with Star" who took the fan on a tour to his favorite stores in including M•A•C, Sanrio, Sephora and Pinkberry. Stars' participation at Buzznet in growing his own active online communities was noted in connection with Buzznet receiving US$6 million in financing in May 2007.

Reality show plans

Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato's World of Wonders Productions is developing a reality show featuring Star with his "unique in-your-face personality and stunning makeup" and promise of "glamour and sexual tension." World of Wonders, who are also developing shows about an LA lawyer who specializes in medical-marijuana cases called "Allison Margolin: The Dopest Attorney in Town" and "Beauty School Dropout" featuring actor Jim J. Bullock's "second career as the would-be owner of a hair salon," call Star a digital polymath "who writes and performs his own songs."

Life mission

I want people to feel more comfortable with themselves and to realize that no one's opinions matter when it involves self issues. So many young kids have told me I helped them come out to their parents and I helped them to gain higher self-esteem through my I Don't Give a F*ck attitude. But not everyone can see the positive things because they get thrown by my sense of humor.
