===''Runaways'', volume 1 (March 2003 - September 2004)===

====Pride and Joy====
].]]
During their parents' annual gathering, Nico Minoru, ], ], ], ], and ] decide to spy on the meeting via secret passages hidden throughout the Wilder's mansion. They witness the sacrifice of a teenage girl and run away from home, but not before rummaging through their houses for weapons and information, including Gert’s pet ] ]. In a battle with the Minorus, Nico’s mother stabs her daughter in the chest with the Staff of One, yet Nico’s body instinctively absorbs it without harm. Nico and the other runaways make their way to a dilapidated mansion hideout frequented by Chase; it becomes the group's makeshift base of operations and comes to be known as "The Hostel." The group decides to band together to put a halt to their parents' criminal activities, and each individual member who desires one adopts a "codename" for themselves; Nico takes her ] screenname, "Sister Grimm." These codenames are used with diminishing frequency over the course of ''Runaways'' vol. 1, and are never used again in the second volume.

====Teenage Wasteland====
]
During one of their first outings to get food and supplies for The Hostel, Nico, Karolina, Alex, and Chase encounter a robbery at local convenience store. Two of the thieves flee, but one remains, claiming his name is Topher and that he was forced into the robbery by his parents. The runaways spirit him back to The Hostel, where he seduces Nico and later Karolina, after which Nico leaves the Hostel in frustration. Topher follows her outside and reveals that he is a ]. Alex saves her from being bitten, and escorts Nico back to the Hostel. Topher, however, follows them and fights the runaways but dies when he drinks Karolina’s solar-irradiated blood. At this point, Alex and Nico become a couple.

====Lost and Found====
The Pride's contact within the LAPD, Lieutenant Flores, hires runaways-turned-vigilantes ] to track down Nico and her friends. Nico is struck by Dagger's blades and swallowed into the ] by Cloak along with Alex, Chase and Karolina. Nico reacts to the Darkforce Dimension and Dagger's blades severely, complaining that she is being shown her sins and filled with guilt. Gert and Molly convince Cloak & Dagger to release their friends and the two teams talk about the runaways' fight to bring down the Pride. Cloak & Dagger warn the children to lay low until the ] show up for support. However, before they can warn the Avengers, Cloak and Dagger have their memories erased by the Pride.

====The Good Die Young====
]
A week after their encounter with Cloak & Dagger, Alex deciphers the Abstract, the Pride's magical tome which automatically records the past, present, and future deeds of the Pride's members. The group learns that the Pride work for beings called ]; Nico knows of the Gibborim from her occult studies & ] upbringing. After Alex finishes reading the history, the runaways are ambushed by Lieutenant Flores and a ] team in The Hostel. Flores states that a ] within the runaways' cadre tipped him off to The Hostel's location. The runaways escape detainment, and subsequently fight amongst themselves over the identity of the mole. The runaways put aside their differences and decide to ambush the Pride at its next meeting. During the ensuing battle, Alex lets the parents and children knock each other out before outing himself as the mole. He reveals to Nico his plan to overthrow the Pride, securing the six seats of the Gibborim's new world for Nico, Alex, and their respective parents. Nico rejects the offer as the combatants, both adult and child, start to regain consciousness. Alex quickly loses control of the situation and Molly smashes the container with the Gibborim's sacrifice. When the Gibborim appear for the sacrifice, Alex accepts responsibility for its absence and is promptly incinerated. The Gibborim then attack everyone else, and the adults band together to cover their children's escape. They are presumed to perish in the ensuing explosion as their children flee. The Leapfrog crash lands on a Los Angeles beach and the children stumble out only to meet ].

====Eighteen====
The children are split up into separate foster homes; Nico ends up at "Father Flanagan's Home For Unwanted Goth Kids." Three months later, the five remaining runaways sneak out and rendezvous at the ] memorial, where they met to plan their original getaway. After freeing the Leapfrog and Old Lace from a ] storage facility, the five decide to run away from their foster homes and look after each other. Nico becomes the team leader.

===''Runaways'', volume 2 (February 2005 - present)===
====True Believers====
]
Nico leads the runaways as they fight criminals who arrive in LA to fill the power vacuum left by the Pride's defeat; their new Hostel is one of the Pride's old lairs beneath the ]. A future version of Gert shows up at the new Hostel in a time machine to warn the runaways of a future threat named ], son of "the greatest evil in the universe." With her dying breath, the future Gert implores the runaways to find and kill Victor now while he's young and not as powerful. After a fight with ], they get Victor to The Hostel and Nico starts narrowing the possibilities of Victor's father before ] calls Victor, claiming parentage. Victor and the runaways confront Doom, who turns out to be a ] controlled by ], Victor's real "father." Ultron reveals that Victor is a ] and forces Mancha to attack his friends. Nico orders Karolina to draw ] to the battle site. The runaways and Excelsior defeat Ultron, but the runaways manage to slip away right as the battle finishes so Excelsior cannot separate the team. Victor becomes an official member of the team, despite Chase's inhibitions about what Mancha's future entails. When he questions Nico about the decision, she reveals that she is prepared to kill him should the need arise.

====Starcrossed====
Karolina finally expresses romantic feelings towards Nico with an attempted kiss. Nico refuses, saying she just wants to be left alone after Alex's betrayal; Karolina berates herself for misinterpreting Nico's sexuality. Soon afterwards, a spaceship lands in front of Karolina and Nico. The pilot states that his name is ], that he is a ]-in-training, and that he is betrothed to Karolina per an agreement between his and Karolina's parents to stop a war between their homeworlds. Despite Nico's protests, Karolina agrees to aid Xavin. She gives Nico her ] which inhibits Karolina's true, glowing form as a goodbye present, promising to keep in touch. Nonetheless, Nico is distraught.

====East Coast/West Coast====
]
Nico continues to grieve over Karolina's departure, but is interrupted when Cloak seeks the runaways' help after being framed for the brutal beating of his vigilante partner, Dagger. He transports them to ] to conduct their own investigation while he dodges the Avengers. Chase and Nico find an inter-dimensional drug dealer named Pusher Man who deals in ] (MGH) and has access to a variant that gives any person a lesser and temporary form of Cloak's powers. After Chase extracts recent customer Reginald Mantz's name from Pusher Man, Nico thanks Chase with a kiss; Chase rejects the kiss and reminds Nico that Gert is his girlfriend. They collect the rest of the team and flee to the hospital where ] Reginald Mantz works and Dagger is being treated; the runaways encounter Mantz upon the hospital's rooftop. Nico is knocked out, but Chase uses the Staff of One to make Mantz vomit the MGH out of his system. Cloak teleports the team back to Los Angeles.

====Parental Guidance====
After a battle with yet another bad artifact left behind by their evil parents, Nico believes that maybe it is time to take things a little more seriously with Victor, stating that after the likes of Alex and Topher she would like to settle down with a nice boy for a change. Before the two even have a chance to start the relationship Nico is abducted by Chase and has the Staff of One taken from her.

After being abducted, and believing she will be sacrificed to bring back Gert, Chase releases her, claiming he is going to kill himself instead and vicariously free her of the Staff's burden. However, the Gibborim refuse the offer of Chase's soul, claiming it would not be innocent if he were to commit suicide. They attempt to take the powerless Nico as their sacrifice, but Victor - with Molly's help - saves Nico. Victor checks on her, and Nico shows her appreciation by kissing him deeply, seemingly agreeing to be his girlfriend. Nico and the Runaways retreat to the La Brea Tar Pits, but upon returning, they find ] and ] agents awaiting their return.

===Mystic Arcana===
Nico will be a featured character in the upcoming crossover event ].

==The Staff of One==
Nico's sole weapon is the Staff of One, a magical staff that can cast any spell imaginable. There are two demonstrated limitations to the Staff of One's power. First, Nico cannot cast the same spell twice, or the spell will "misfire" and a random effect will occur. For example, the second time she tried to cast a "Fumigation" spell, the Staff teleported Nico and ] miles outside of Los Angeles.<ref name="runv2#7">{{Comic book reference | Writer = ] | Penciller = ] | Inker = ] | Story = Starcrossed | Title = ] | Volume = 2 | Issue = 7 | Publisher = ] }}</ref> The sole demonstrated exception to this limitation is former runaway ]. Alex used the Staff to cast a spell off-panel which bound Karolina's parents in power-dampening chains, and then used the same spell later on Karolina.<ref name="runv1#17">{{Comic book reference | Writer = ] | Penciller = ] | Inker = ] | Story = The Good Die Young | Title = ] | Volume = 1 | Issue = 17 | Publisher = ] }}</ref> The reason for this exception is unrevealed.

The second limitation of the Staff of One is that it cannot be used to bring people back from the dead. Nico discovered this limitation when she tried to resurrect her former lover Alex Wilder off-panel, between ''Runaways'' vol. 1 #17 and ''Runaways'' vol. 2 #2. She revealed her attempt to save Alex after a future version of ] died in the Hostel due to internal injuries. <ref name="runv2#2">{{Comic book reference | Writer = ] | Penciller = ] | Inker = ] | Story = True Believers | Title = ] | Volume = 2 | Issue = 2 | Publisher = ] }}</ref>

In the crossover event ''Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways'', series author Zeb Wells established that Nico does not need to speak English words to cast spells; Nico cast a teleportation spell using a Latin phrase supplied to her by ].<ref name="Young Avengers/Runaways#3">{{Comic book reference | Writer = Zeb Wells | Penciller = Stephano Caselli | Inker = Stephano Caselli | Story = Parental Guidance | Title = Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways | Issue = 3 | Publisher = ] }}</ref>

Only Nico can summon the Staff, but anyone can cast spells with it. When not in use, the Staff retreats into her body, which Nico describes as "feel like I have something in my eye, but instead of my eye, it's... it's my soul." <ref name="runv1#7">{{Comic book reference | Writer = ] | Penciller = ] | Inker = ] | Story = Teenage Wasteland | Title = ] | Volume = 1 | Issue = 7 | Publisher = ] }}</ref> To summon the Staff, Nico must shed blood and then recite the incantation "When blood is shed, let the Staff of One emerge." The Staff always emerges from the center of her chest, and passes through any clothing she is wearing without damaging it or Nico. However the Staff will damage anyone or anything directly in its way when ejected from Nico's body. For example, the Staff emerges after the vampire Topher begins to drain Nico's blood and pierces directly through the center of his chest. <ref name="runv1#10">{{Comic book reference | Writer = ] | Penciller = ] | Inker = ] | Story = Teenage Wasteland | Title = ] | Volume = 1 | Issue = 10 | Publisher = ] }}</ref>

Starting in the second volume, Nico demonstrates a limited ability to cast spells without the Staff.
*Vol. 2 #2 - Nico conjures and dismisses a red-tinted image of Alex Wilder
*Vol. 2 #14 - Nico appears at a group meeting in a puff of smoke in Vol. 2 #14.
*Vol. 2 #27 - Nico magically controls a fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

==Relationships==
Nico has proven to be a very emotional person, yet has repeatedly expressed difficulty with knowing precisely what she is feeling. In vol. 2 #19, Nico admitted a tendency to seek physical comfort during or after highly emotional situations or periods of stress. These traits have defined her relationships with many of the runaways throughout the series.

===Alex Wilder===
In volume 1, Nico and Alex share a brief relationship. She kisses him for the first time during the runaways' attempted rescue of Molly Hayes in vol. 1 #5, but refuses to talk about it for fear of ruining the moment. She kisses and expresses love for Alex after he saves her from the vampire Topher; it is generally accepted that Nico and Alex are a couple at this point. However, despite her professed love for Alex, Nico chooses to side with the runaways after Alex reveals his plan to bring her to the Gibborim's new world with her parents, firmly establishing her dedication to the team and her strength of character. However, despite the betrayal, Nico demonstrates willingness to forgive when she unsuccessfully tries to resurrect Alex off-panel between vol. 1 #17 and vol. 2 #2; she states in vol. 2 #2 that although Alex was a traitor, he did not deserve death.

===Karolina Dean===
Karolina's feelings for Nico were hinted at throughout volume 1, culminating with Karolina sheepishly blushing when Nico says she has sworn off boys in vol. 1 #18. However, Karolina's feelings were not explicitly expressed until vol. 2 #7 when Karolina startles Nico with an attempted kiss. Nico had not shown romantic feelings for Karolina previously and turns Karolina down, saying that she wants time alone. However, when Karolina decides to travel to her home planet Majesdane with Xavin, Nico is distraught. Chase stops Nico from casting a spell to bring Karolina back to Earth, and later is caught strewing Karolina's clothes about her floor for remembrance's sake. Nico seems to react the strongest to Karolina's departure despite not showing many signs of romantic feelings or a close friendship during the course of the series. In vol. 2 #25 and #26, Nico hints at possibly having romantic feelings for Karolina, which Karolina ultimately rejects because of her engagement to Xavin.

===Gertrude Yorkes===
Gert and Nico had been friends in school before running away from home. After Gert's death in vol. 2 #18, Nico reveals that she had convinced Gert to dye her hair purple and that they were very close friends. Nico and Gert had even agreed that Gert would take over the leadership position should something happen to Nico. However, they briefly had an altercation when Gert discovered that Nico kissed Chase after he talked Pusher Man into revealing Reginald Mantz's name; Nico and Gert's short argument included tossing insults at each other, then gradually resolving their differences with a handshake and AOL Instant Messenger slang. Nico experiences ] after Gert dies, knowing that Gert's murderer ] had initially meant to kill Nico. She begins a physical relationship with Victor Mancha to cope with the guilt.

===Victor Mancha===
After her first pseudo-sexual encounter with Victor, Nico explains that she seeks physical comfort after periods of stress. While Victor expresses feelings for Nico, she asks for time alone to clear her head and figure her feelings out, much like how she initially dealt with Alex and Karolina after each expressed feelings for Nico. Victor calls Nico his girlfriend when he attempts to save her from Chase, and although she is in a hostage situation, Nico still lightly scolds Victor for calling her a girlfriend. By the end of Brian K. Vaughan's run on the title in vol. 2 #24, Victor and Nico appear to be casually dating, as opposed to being a committed couple.

==Conceptual Changes==
In Brian K. Vaughan's original pitch for the series, Nico was called Rachel Messina. Her parents were still magicians, but posed as wealthy antique dealers; this cover story was ultimately used for Gert's time travelling parents. Nico was also originally supposed to have a spellbook instead of the Staff of One, and be a devout Christian, making her reluctant to use any of the spells.<ref>Runaways Vol. 1 Hardcover</ref> In vol. 2, Vaughan reveals that Nico was Christian during her youth, but it is not one of Nico's defining attributes.

==Triva==
* Nico is Japanese-American
* Nico's first and last names are male names

Nico Minoru, sometimes known as Sister Grimm, is a Marvel Comics teenage superheroine in the comic book series Runaways. She was created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Adrian Alphona, and first appears in Runaways vol. 1 #1 with many of the other staple characters of the Runaways title. Nico is the de facto leader of her unofficial & nameless superhero team, making her one of the few female superhero team leaders and one of the very few Asian superhero team leaders. Nico's trademark is her elaborate and ornate gothic wardrobe.

Nico is a sorceress like her parents before her. She uses the mystical Staff of One to cast nearly any magical spell she can imagine. Nico uses her gift to make up for her parents' villainous actions and to prevent anyone from assuming the Pride's place at the top of Los Angeles organized crime.

During their parents' annual gathering, Nico Minoru, Alex Wilder, Karolina Dean, Gertrude Yorkes, Chase Stein, and Molly Hayes decide to spy on the meeting via secret passages hidden throughout the Wilder's mansion. They witness the sacrifice of a teenage girl and run away from home, but not before rummaging through their houses for weapons and information, including Gert’s pet deinonychus Old Lace. In a battle with the Minorus, Nico’s mother stabs her daughter in the chest with the Staff of One, yet Nico’s body instinctively absorbs it without harm. Nico and the other runaways make their way to a dilapidated mansion hideout frequented by Chase; it becomes the group's makeshift base of operations and comes to be known as "The Hostel." The group decides to band together to put a halt to their parents' criminal activities, and each individual member who desires one adopts a "codename" for themselves; Nico takes her AOL Instant Messenger screenname, "Sister Grimm." These codenames are used with diminishing frequency over the course of Runaways vol. 1, and are never used again in the second volume.

Topher follows her outside and reveals that he is a vampire. Alex saves her from being bitten, and escorts Nico back to the Hostel. Topher, however, follows them and fights the runaways but dies when he drinks Karolina’s solar-irradiated blood. At this point, Alex and Nico become a couple.

Lost and Found

The Pride's contact within the LAPD, Lieutenant Flores, hires runaways-turned-vigilantes Cloak & Dagger to track down Nico and her friends. Nico is struck by Dagger's blades and swallowed into the Darkforce Dimension by Cloak along with Alex, Chase and Karolina. Nico reacts to the Darkforce Dimension and Dagger's blades severely, complaining that she is being shown her sins and filled with guilt. Gert and Molly convince Cloak & Dagger to release their friends and the two teams talk about the runaways' fight to bring down the Pride. Cloak & Dagger warn the children to lay low until the Avengers show up for support. However, before they can warn the Avengers, Cloak and Dagger have their memories erased by the Pride.

A week after their encounter with Cloak & Dagger, Alex deciphers the Abstract, the Pride's magical tome which automatically records the past, present, and future deeds of the Pride's members. The group learns that the Pride work for beings called the Gibborim; Nico knows of the Gibborim from her occult studies & Christian upbringing. After Alex finishes reading the history, the runaways are ambushed by Lieutenant Flores and a S.W.A.T. team in The Hostel. Flores states that a mole within the runaways' cadre tipped him off to The Hostel's location. The Leapfrog crash lands on a Los Angeles beach and the children stumble out only to meet Captain America.

Eighteen

The children are split up into separate foster homes; Nico ends up at "Father Flanagan's Home For Unwanted Goth Kids." Three months later, the five remaining runaways sneak out and rendezvous at the James Dean memorial, where they met to plan their original getaway. After freeing the Leapfrog and Old Lace from a West Coast Avengers storage facility, the five decide to run away from their foster homes and look after each other. Nico becomes the team leader.

Runaways, volume 2 (February 2005 - present)

True Believers

Nico leads the runaways as they fight criminals who arrive in LA to fill the power vacuum left by the Pride's defeat; their new Hostel is one of the Pride's old lairs beneath the La Brea Tar Pits. A future version of Gert shows up at the new Hostel in a time machine to warn the runaways of a future threat named Victor Mancha, son of "the greatest evil in the universe." With her dying breath, the future Gert implores the runaways to find and kill Victor now while he's young and not as powerful. After a fight with Excelsior, they get Victor to The Hostel and Nico starts narrowing the possibilities of Victor's father before Dr. Doom calls Victor, claiming parentage. Victor and the runaways confront Doom, who turns out to be a Doombot controlled by Ultron, Victor's real "father." Ultron reveals that Victor is a cyborg and forces Mancha to attack his friends. Nico orders Karolina to draw Excelsior to the battle site.

Starcrossed

Karolina finally expresses romantic feelings towards Nico with an attempted kiss. Nico refuses, saying she just wants to be left alone after Alex's betrayal; Karolina berates herself for misinterpreting Nico's sexuality. Soon afterwards, a spaceship lands in front of Karolina and Nico. The pilot states that his name is Xavin, that he is a Super-Skrull-in-training, and that he is betrothed to Karolina per an agreement between his and Karolina's parents to stop a war between their homeworlds. Despite Nico's protests, Karolina agrees to aid Xavin. She gives Nico her medic alert bracelet which inhibits Karolina's true, glowing form as a goodbye present, promising to keep in touch. Nonetheless, Nico is distraught.

East Coast/West Coast

Nico continues to grieve over Karolina's departure, but is interrupted when Cloak seeks the runaways' help after being framed for the brutal beating of his vigilante partner, Dagger. He transports them to New York City to conduct their own investigation while he dodges the Avengers. Chase and Nico find an inter-dimensional drug dealer named Pusher Man who deals in Mutant Growth Hormone (MGH) and has access to a variant that gives any person a lesser and temporary form of Cloak's powers. After Chase extracts recent customer Reginald Mantz's name from Pusher Man, Nico thanks Chase with a kiss; Chase rejects the kiss and reminds Nico that Gert is his girlfriend. They collect the rest of the team and flee to the hospital where RN Reginald Mantz works and Dagger is being treated; the runaways encounter Mantz upon the hospital's rooftop. Nico is knocked out, but Chase uses the Staff of One to make Mantz vomit the MGH out of his system. Cloak teleports the team back to Los Angeles.

Parental Guidance

Nico and the Runaways retreat to the La Brea Tar Pits, but upon returning, they find Iron Man and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents awaiting their return.

Mystic Arcana

Nico will be a featured character in the upcoming crossover event Mystic Arcana.

The Staff of One

Nico's sole weapon is the Staff of One, a magical staff that can cast any spell imaginable. There are two demonstrated limitations to the Staff of One's power. First, Nico cannot cast the same spell twice, or the spell will "misfire" and a random effect will occur. For example, the second time she tried to cast a "Fumigation" spell, the Staff teleported Nico and Karolina miles outside of Los Angeles. The sole demonstrated exception to this limitation is former runaway Alex Wilder. Alex used the Staff to cast a spell off-panel which bound Karolina's parents in power-dampening chains, and then used the same spell later on Karolina. The reason for this exception is unrevealed.

The second limitation of the Staff of One is that it cannot be used to bring people back from the dead. Nico discovered this limitation when she tried to resurrect her former lover Alex Wilder off-panel, between Runaways vol. 1 #17 and Runaways vol. 2 #2. She revealed her attempt to save Alex after a future version of Gertrude Yorkes died in the Hostel due to internal injuries.

In the crossover event Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways, series author Zeb Wells established that Nico does not need to speak English words to cast spells; Nico cast a teleportation spell using a Latin phrase supplied to her by the Vision.

Only Nico can summon the Staff, but anyone can cast spells with it. When not in use, the Staff retreats into her body, which Nico describes as "feel like I have something in my eye, but instead of my eye, it's... it's my soul." To summon the Staff, Nico must shed blood and then recite the incantation "When blood is shed, let the Staff of One emerge." The Staff always emerges from the center of her chest, and passes through any clothing she is wearing without damaging it or Nico. However the Staff will damage anyone or anything directly in its way when ejected from Nico's body. For example, the Staff emerges after the vampire Topher begins to drain Nico's blood and pierces directly through the center of his chest.

  • Vol. 2 #14 - Nico appears at a group meeting in a puff of smoke in Vol. 2 #14.
  • Vol. 2 #27 - Nico magically controls a fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Relationships

Nico has proven to be a very emotional person, yet has repeatedly expressed difficulty with knowing precisely what she is feeling. In vol. 2 #19, Nico admitted a tendency to seek physical comfort during or after highly emotional situations or periods of stress. These traits have defined her relationships with many of the runaways throughout the series.

Alex Wilder

Karolina Dean

Gertrude Yorkes

Nico experiences survivor's guilt after Gert dies, knowing that Gert's murderer Geoffrey Wilder had initially meant to kill Nico. She begins a physical relationship with Victor Mancha to cope with the guilt.

Victor Mancha

Conceptual Changes

In Brian K. Vaughan's original pitch for the series, Nico was called Rachel Messina. Her parents were still magicians, but posed as wealthy antique dealers; this cover story was ultimately used for Gert's time travelling parents. Nico was also originally supposed to have a spellbook instead of the Staff of One, and be a devout Christian, making her reluctant to use any of the spells. In vol. 2, Vaughan reveals that Nico was Christian during her youth, but it is not one of Nico's defining attributes.
