Glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethly) glycine) was first sold my Monsanto under the tradename Roundup.
It is no longer under patent so it is sold under numerous other names. Before the advent of Glyphosate resistant crops it was used as a non-selective herbicide. It kills plants by inhibiting there ability to make aromatic amino acids.
