The Typhoo tea brand was launched in 1903 by William Sumner of Birmingham, England after his sister Mary had tried some of his tea which he recommended to her for indigestion, the brew was later to become one of the UK's most popular tea brands.
History of the brand
In 1863, Sumner published, A Popular Treatise on Tea as a by- product of the first trade missions to China from London which mainly incorporated Matthew Boulton of Birmingham.
In 1870 Sumner founded a pharmacy/grocery business in Birmingham.
Sumner set his own criteria for the new brand:
- The name had to be distinctive and unlike others.
- It had to be a name that would trip off the tongue.
- It had to be one that would be protected by registration.
The original Typhoo basin is situated in Digbeth in Birmingham and the brand is now owned by Premier Foods of the USA, typhoo tea is now manufactured in Scotland.
The old works still stand including a large chimney, the site is to be redeveloped into a prestigeous canal side apartment project.
Premier Foods claim that a cup of Typhoo is drunk every 90 seconds in... that's 2.9 million cups of Typhoo made each year in the UK... or 23 million packets sold annually.
