Endal, wearing his
PDSA Gold Medal.

Endal (born 13 December, 1996) is a male Labrador retriever in England whose abilities as a service dog have had considerable news media coverage.

Publicity

Endal's handler Allen Parton, a trustee of the Canine Partners, publicises the skilled training which is needed for assistance dogs by using the story of Endal as an example. Like Baron Swinfen, Jimmy Hill and others, Allen and Endal are both patrons of the registered charity Labrador Rescue South East and Central.

Over one hundred eighty camera crews from several countries have interviewed Allen about Endal, and there have been numerous articles in the print media. They were featured in the "Endal and Dee" episode of the National Geographic Society's Dogs With Jobs television series and a book about the series.

A film of a year in the life of Allen and Endal is in production.

Distinctions

Endal has received several awards including a Blue Peter Badge and a PDSA Gold Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty. Endal is the first dog to have been taken aboard the London Eye Millenium Wheel and was voted "Dog of the Millennium" by readers of Dogs Today magazine.

Background

Endal is a pedigreed yellow Labrador retriever. As a puppy he presented with the condition osteochondrosis in his front legs which made his suitability for becoming an assistance dog uncertain. However, with a diet of cereal and raw meat, and a controlled exercise plan, Endal qualified as a fully operational assistance dog and went to work with ex-Royal Navy Chief Petty Officer Allen Parton in 1997.

Endal is able to respond to over one hundred instructions, including operating buttons and switches and loading and emptying a washing machine. He is able to put a card into an automated teller machine, retrieve the card when the process is complete and return the card to a wallet.

When Allen Parton was knocked out of his wheelchair by a passing car in 2001, Endal pulled the unconscious Parton into the recovery position, covered him with a blanket, fetched his mobile phone and then went to a nearby hotel to attract attention to the situation.
