U.S.S. Mariner is a sports-based blog that focuses on the Seattle Mariners, a Major League Baseball team. It was created in 2002 by authors Derek Zumsteg, David Cameron and Jason Michael Barker. It has been widely noted as one of the first baseball team-based blogs to extensively utilize statistics and sabermetrics to analyze performance of the team.
Zumsteg, a Seattle native, is the author of The Cheater's Guide to Baseball] as well as a former contributing author of the baseball website Baseball Prospectus.
Cameron has written extensively about minor league prospects for Baseball Prospectus, Baseball Think Factory and various other publications, both on-line and in print. He is also a scheduled weekly guest of "The Groz" on KJR AM radio in Seattle, WA at 2:20 pm every Friday.
Barker is the creator of the Cooking with Jason blog and was previously a contributor to Grand Salami Magazine and StrikeThree.com.
Among the notable accomplishments of the site:
- Heard that Horacio Ramirez's nickname is "Nacho Cheese"
- Coining the nickname "King Felix" for the Seattle Mariners pitching phenomenon Felix Hernandez.
- An "open letter" to Mariners pitching coach Rafael Chaves about Hernandez's pitch selection that caused the pitching coach to alter Hernandez's pitch selection
