Satsuki azalea is a Cultivar Group of dwarf azaleas extensively cultivated by the Japanese despite its Chinese origin. They are derived from Rhododendron indicum and hybrids of this with other related species. They have small, round leaves, and large pink flowers from May to June. The name "Satsuki" in Japanese represents the fifth month of the Asian lunar calendar. Satsuki azaleas are commonly used as a subject in bonsai and many bonsai enthusiasts and shows are dedicated solely to them.
