History of Sigma Lambda Alpha

Sigma Lambda Alpha (ΣΛΑ), otherwise known as Señoritas Latinas en Accion, was founded in the summer of 1992 by Angeles Gonzalez. Angeles read an article in Hispanic magazine about a national Hispanic sorority called Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas at the University of Pennsylvania and wrote to the sorority for more information. She began to inquire about proper procedures for establishing a sorority through the Office of Student Development.

However, Sigma Lambda Upsilon of Pennsylvania, decided against starting a chapter in Texas, because of the distance between the two states. As a result, Angeles and the other active members decided to begin a new sorority to be called Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority, Inc.- Senoritas Latiñas en Accion.

Angeles began by selecting ten ladies to become founding mothers to the sorority and to attend the first meeting. From there, they discussed what the organization's goals would be and elected officers. The first officers of Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority, Inc. were as follows:

President: Angeles Gonzalez
Vice President: Aliza Gonzalez
Secretary: Cristina Garza
Treasurer: Andrea Quinones
Social Chairwoman: Brenda Sotelo
Other first active members included: Maria Lozano and Alicia Padilla

The active members worked throughout the Fall semester of 1992 in order to establish their sorority and induct the first class. The first pledge class was inducted in the Spring of 1993. At the induction ceremony each new active member took part in the traditions of Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Thus, the best sisterhood was established as Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority, Inc. / Señoritas Latinas en Acción at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas.
