			Όπως θα διαπιστώσεις με μία μικρή ανάγνωση, τούρκοι συγγραφείς όπως Deliogul, Kudret Abi και άλλα πρακτόρια της ΜΙΤ έχουν οργιάσει, μετατρέποντας το άρθρο σε ένα ανεπανάληπτο και ανιστόρητο εγκώμιο για το σφαγέα Κεμάλ χωρίς την παραμικρή μνεία για ό,τι έκανε στη Σμύρνη, στον Πόντο και σε βάρος των Αρμενίων, Κούρδων κτλ.
			Εγώ προσπάθησα επανειλημμένα να βάλω έστω και μία μικρή παραγραφούλα για τα καμώματά του.
			Την παραθέτω εδώ για να την δεις επειδή δεν έχει κάτι το ακραίο ούτε ως προς το περιεχόμενο ούτε ως προς τη διατύπωση:

Option 3 is my preferred option as well. but the recommendation suggested we go with option 2 first pending consensus on 3. Even though the mediation cabal decision is non binding shouldn't we just follow through with 2 and take a poll on 3 at a later date, as per the recommendation? Dr.K. 15:36, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

If the recommendation had been more explicit on enforcing option 2 (A), we should follow it. But it foresees the possibility of consensus about option 3 (B), and I thought that if we can reach it now, everything would be simpler. This picture appeared in many newspapers in Greece and abroad during the dictatorship and after. However I do not recall a specific publication name at this time. I can only recall that I saw it. I think the fairusein tag is the only one that could be applicable. Three other images claiming fair use on the Panagoulis page were recently uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons, which is what took me to that page. William Avery 20:17, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I agree. There is a less optimal one Fairuseunsure as well. The problem is as far as I understand the fairusein tag has to be repeated three times because it can only be used one article at a time. except if we ignore the word article in the tag and include multiple article titles. Byzantine names

People not familiar with Byzantium might tend to think that Marcus Aurelius and Comnenus were both Roman emperors, even though the latter clearly never used Latin to write his name and he definitely was not a Roman Emperor. And definitely did not write his name in Latin but in Greek Κομνηνός, that transliterates in English as Komnenos not Comnenus. Why use a Latin filter as a surrogate to transliteration? Now that I recovered somewhat I agree completely. This whole debate reads like the United Nations of controversies. It has elements of historical and cultural wrongs and distortions. Onomatological distortions to enhance and cover up the historical and cultural distortions etc. I guess that's what you get when a greater Empire splits in two. The kids start fighting for the inheritance, and history, culture and onomatology try to catch up centuries later! Your contribitions to the debate were brilliant and a real pleasure to contemplate. Sir, such words are far too grand, but I think the condition you mentioned is contagious. For a while anyway. Your observations on the struggle for inheritance between the components of a former entity are, alas, all too correct. Some years ago I visited Lithuania as part of a multinational group and our trip included a visit to Trakai Castle and a lecture by a local custodian on the rudimentary history of Lithuania. Halfway through, I noticed a Belarusian from our group, a history student like myself, showing great signs of frustration, but finally uttering "but this is Belarusian history". It had never really occurred to him that more than one nation could share the same prehistory. This experience gave me somewhat of a shock and made me take a second glance at a lot of Danish history. In Scandinavia we have a similar debate between Danes and Norwegians since our ancestors, for better or worse, shared four hundred years of common history; was Peder Tordenskjold, one of our greatest heroes, a Dane, a Norwegian or perhaps both or neither? On important days, both Denmark and Norway place wreaths on his tomb. Or Ludvig Holberg whose plays are loved in both countries? Or what about Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis who is praised in both Poland, Lithuania and Belarus? Each nation tries to monopolize him as "one of our own". These and other examples made me realize that in fact more than one nation can look up to the same heroes of the past and secondly, that we should judge any bygone age on its own terms, rather than trying anachronistically to make the past fit our own current reality or any other age for that matter. Trying to parcel up a common past is particularly damaging and leads to absurd results. It is both an unrewarding and futile work which only destroys what was an integral whole in its day. The only thing accomplished by doing so is killing the patient, which indeed almost occurred in Danish historiography for several reasons. Only during the last 20 years have scholars begun reintegrating the histories of the different areas that once made up the country of my ancestors, and this work is only in its beginning. All Danish schoolchildren are tought that Rundetårn, Rosenborg or Børsen as masterpieces built by King Christian IV but only rarely do their teachers mention his buildings in Norway or Scania, although the church in Kristianstad is a masterpiece and was one of his favourite buildings. It took me some time, but I have come to the conclusion that closing our eyes to parts of our past or trying to make the past fit a current reality is just as damaging as fighting like jealous children over the family inheritance. Unfortunately, these solutions has been used far too many times in the past and it will take a lot of work to mend what was once broken. And centuries old slander and misunderstandings can make any situation even worse. Perhaps both the Eastern Empire and Denmark-Norway will one day get the chance to be judged on their own terms. Fascinating. A great background story to contemplate in the context of our debate. The wealth of historical material presented and the apt analogies will provide a tremendous wellspring of ideas for the future, as well as information about a part of Scandinavian History I was not very familiar with but I always wanted to investigate. I absolutely agree that the past deserves to be recognised for what it was. The problem is as you say that there are sometimes too many squabbling inheritors. Some can't even come to terms that the unit (Kingdom or Empire) has broken up. So they view the new parts using the coloured lens of the status quo ante. This can take many forms. It can, as in your examples, simply take the form of (benign?) neglect. By simply not mentioning something as for instance the church in Kristianstad, we convey the message that we not they are the the real inheritors of the past. This classifies as selective memory and it is a memory filtering method and an instrument of historical distortion. Other types of filters, always used as agents of distortion, include onomatological filtering methods. I will not go further into this territory as the very recent debate includes some great examples of such filters. Thanks, I can only agree with your conclusion. Just for the sake of clarity, one of my examples was slightly incorrect. I know Čiurlionis is praised in Lithuania and I've heard the same is the case in Belarus, however I'm not sure about Poland. The example I was thinking about was Adam Mickiewicz who wrote a major works in Polish literature, but Pan Tadeusz begins with the words "Oh Lithuania ...". Mickiewicz is famous in virtually all of the former Poland-Lithuania. In the Danish case, you are pretty close, but it is more than neglect; it is collective denial. It is the result of a series of collective shocks following the wars of 1658 and 1864 and the dissolution of the union in 1814. The two latter events were the most influential and particularly the Second War of Schleswig played a major role. The war in 1658 was bad, but the events in 1814 and 1864 reduced Denmark(-Norway) from a regional power to virtually nothing. In fact, Napoleon III suggested to carve up the remainder between Prussia and Sweden, and many doomed the Danish people to assimilation. All in all, a very rough awakening. From 1864-1943/45 Denmark led a pro-German foreign policy for no other reason than preserving national independence, although the vast majority of the population was antagonistic or hostile towards Germany, most notably because of its treatment of its Danish minority. There were many positive results of the "Hvad udad tabes skal indad vindes" attitude ("what is lost outside must be regained inside"), including the foundations of the modern Danish welfare state, advancements in agriculture (Danish bacon) and the reclaiming of moors in Jutland which had been abandoned following the plague five hundred years earlier. The flip side of this mentality was that many people closed their eyes and ears, and ignored any aspects of history which couldn't be easily mended into their own reality as a minor nation. The South Jutland issue was the exception but the reunification in 1920 pretty much closed this chapter as well. This reaction has lasted until recently; whenever somebody dared to take an interest in the "missing" aspects of our history, chances were that the individual would be labelled as a nationalist, irrendetist or even worse. On the other side of the border; Norway has become increasingly self-aware, which means that the Norwegians have become more focused on their own aspects of our common history (although it is now considered somewhat bad taste there to refer to the former union as a "four hundred year long night"). Scania was (rather brutally) assimilated into Sweden and it is a recent development there to be interested in the region's Danish past. In Sweden, such interests are still associated with regionalism (or even separatism which is clearly off the mark.) The reasons for filtering / distorting (or even rewriting) history have been many, but the results produced are rarely pretty or accurate. In the Danish case, we still need to eradicate some of the ghosts that haunted our ancestors. I'm Danish and a student of history, but I don't think I have ever seen a list of the monarchy's five largest cities in e.g. 1800, now you know why. We should let the past speak for itself and be so fair as to judge it on its own terms and standards, rather than twisting and distorted it in order to apply later inventions or biases. Thanks Valentinian, for this excellent historical review. I didn't know that so much historical conflict existed in a place such as Scandinavia. I always had an image of it being the Switzerland of Northern Europe or better. A place with great tolerance and advanced social and political structures with a minimum of constraints imposed on the individual. Such a place, in my mind could not possibly harbour such strife at any historical juncture. Now I have to re-evaluate Switzerland as well! It just shows that history was not particularly kind to any part of Europe in particular (save maybe Switzerland?) and no place comes out unscathed if you just let the time span become long enough. All countries from Roman times onward had their own share of tragedies and wrongs inflicted on them. It's a new understanding that I possess now, thanks to your analysis. Thanks for taking the time and I am sure I will analyze your historical perspective for some time to come. You are right on your conclusion. Let the past speak for itself. Sometimes this voice is very subtle and very weak. The voice of the past is not a human voice, for everyone is long dead and gone. The voice of the past is the subtle voice of History, names, customs, art etc. We should treat the historical past like archaelogists treat a newly found tomb. Tenderly and with surgical precision and using the right tools. Attention is needed even in the smallest details. Only then our analysis will make the voice of the past audible again. The past can speak to us, if only we give it a fair chance and we must; because it is our ancestors and even us eventually. Actually thank you Michali for the excellent research. It was very interesting for me to find out the name of the collaborator and all the other details as well as the great citations that verified my sources. Also congratulations for your great work in the other articles as well, (junta, Velos mutiny etc.).

Now to ODB. Check this link: Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium and this: ODB. I'm sure you have watched this great debate unfold in many different areas of Misplaced Pages. To cut the story short there are people insisting on rendering the Byzantine Emperor names according to the old fashioned Latin based convention ex. Paleologus and there are others that prefer the new scholarship standard, the ODB, that renders them directly from the Greek version such as Palaiologos and thus it is truer to the actual name. The first time, a couple of months ago, through mediation it was decided we would use the modern standard of ODB to render the names, without distorting them through the Latin version. Well that made a few people unhappy and now we are in the middle of another debate/vote/moratorium, etc. You get the idea! If you want you can actually vote in the matter as well. I didn't actually do any research about Kollas, I had stumbled upon his story while working on Romaniotes. A corfiote friend of mine reminded it to me the other day. There is actually a major street in Corfu named "Kollas street" or something although there might be a chance of it being named after a different Kollas.

As for ODB, thanks for the information. I actually went ahead and made a stub about it: Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium (you might care to improve that one!). It might be useful for techies like myself who have no idea about canonical scholarly reference material. And the funny thing is, the rapper now has the word "oxford" on his article.

Redirects and misspellings

Hi,

Regarding student portests, just so you know, one valuable use of redirects is to compensate for obvious spelling errors. As a rule, one shouldn't endeavor to make a redirect for every conceivable mangling of letters in any article title; but, if one already exists for whatever reason, there is no need to delete it. More narrowly, there are only three valid reasons listed for speedy deleting redirects, together with other general reasons for speedy deletion (WP:CSD). Thanks. Good point. I'll try to follow it. Except that sometimes ,(more than sometimes actually), the idea (or the correction) comes soon after I saved! That's what happened at Bommervik as well. As well I have the Firefox browser problem. Now I avoid to do big edits. I do more but smaller ones, so that it doesn't cut off. Check Bommersvik's history to see a few browser malfunctions that I wrote about in the edit summary. Anyway I'm glad you pointed this out since I wanted to talk about the Firefox to someone. As of now, we still need separate accounts for different projects (this is being fixed). Once you've done that, uploading to Commons works pretty much exactly as it does here. The only difference is that Commons has an extensive category system. So you'll want to add ] in the text field of your upload (I'll help sort them further if you'd like). Commons also has gallery pages, so if you'd like to present an image gallery, you can edit commons:Corfu just like editing an article here. If you upload the same image there as here, you should note that here with {{NowCommons}}. I think that's everything one needs to know. Jkelly 19:49, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for your kind words. Actually, I kind of agree that the article is a bit verbose (albeit in a pleasant and smart way), so I think that it should be tweeked a little. I peeked at Misplaced Pages:Summary style and it does make some good points. I mean, as a Greek, the article suits me perfectly and I find it quite a good read, but what would an eg Australian think of the matter? So, maybe the tag should go -personally I believe such tags should go to talk pages, as they don't concern the reader but the editors- but maybe you should work on it a little more. Btw, I posted my comment because I don't like people complaining about other wikipedians' work without giving at least an effort to improve it. If I was active in editing the article I'd go ahead on my own, but I'm not, and it's exams period for me. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Template:GreekPresidents

Greetings. What's your opinion of this template? There are two minor flaws, I think: one, the current flag wasn't used between 1975 and 1978, but I think it's safe to gloss over that; two, Papadopoulos named himself president in 1973, though that was during the military dictatorship; I don't know if we should mention him. Also, a better title might perhaps be found. Anyway, since you know much more about the subject than I do, please give it a look and tell me your opinion before I start putting it on the presidents' pages. Thank you. Hi. Personally I'm not a big fan of the box. Karamanlis was not always a president, therefore putting his picture in a presidential box is misleading. I think that's a major flaw. The other major flaw is as you mentioned we have to put Papadopoulos in such a box. And why not Pinochet? That would be a travesty. I think we should remove the box altogether. It actually doesn't fit the article and the information in it can be found in other sections within the article. Dr.K. 09:34, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

To address your two main concerns: one, Karamanlis was prime minister as well, and I do plan on making a template with prime ministers. However, he was president twice, and the template refers to heads of state--presidents--not heads of government (prime ministers). Anyway, have a look at the equivalent templates in the Greek and German Wikipedias. Two, I'm thinking of expanding the template to include the periods of Monarchy and military rule, just so we can cover the Papadopoulos issue. By the way, Pinochet does appear in the Chile Presidents template: , because he was in fact President of Chile. In conclusion: thank you for your response and I will work to improve it. Greek history project

Hi! You'll see some contributions of mine in metapolitefsi. Something else now:

In my Userpage I expressed my thoughts about not having any Wiki-project working on Greek topics, while users from other countries are far more active. User:Argos'Dad read my thoughts and expressed his interest in participating in a project concerning the Greek history. Check User talk:Yannismarou/Thoughts. After that response I went through history projects in Misplaced Pages. There aren't many of them, but I think it is an interesting idea and I hope it will not be difficult to recruit members.
I think we could use as a model Misplaced Pages:WikiProject History of India. Have a look, when you have time. I believe that, if we decide it, during the Weekend I can start setting the page of the Wikiproject. And then we must start recruiting and organizing (main goals, plans, templates, priorities, rating article, possibly peer-reviewing-I like peer-reviewing articles!, ways of collaboration, topics, possible task forces etc.).

Well not exactly. I actually saw Category:British Royal Consorts redlined (non-functional wikilnk) in one of the articles and I simply activated it. If you look at the articles that populate Category:British Royal Consorts you'll see that the wikilink preexisted the actual category. Now the main difference between the two categories appears to be capitalisation. Thessalonian Zealots

Hello, how are things for you, Tassos? I want to ask you for a favor. I stumbled upon the article on the 14th century Zealots movement of Thessaloniki, and found the story extremely intriguing. It has all those elements that could make a good history novel, like Eco's Name of the Rose or Blisset's Q: fiercely conflicting theological and political factions, great and tragic figures like Palamas and Barlaam, conflict between pretenders to the throne, foreign powers (Turks and Serbs), civil unrest, a "communist" revolution, the whole lot. Anyway, I'm not a writer nor am I trying to convince you to write a novel, it's just that since you have academic knowledge of the Empire, could you please give the article some references and sources? I know the ODB must have some info, but I'd also love to hear of any books more specifically dedicated to the subject. Chandrasekhar image

Although it's possible, it's hard enough to make unfree images of living person acceptable on English Misplaced Pages. Thanks for raising my attention to this matter, It was a mistake from my part to tag this image as replaceable.

I first run through this image in the American Indians article (where it's surely replaceable/unecessary). I followed the first link on Image:Chandrasekhar.gif#filelinks to check if the person on whose biography this image was being used was alive. But, as the image was (wrongly) being used by the {{US-physicist-stub }} template, it was being used by a lot of biographies, and the one I picked was from a living guy. I didn't noticed my mistake and tagged the image for deletion.

Of course, I'm just explaining, and not justifying, my mistake. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa.

But anyway... this image is tagged was {{promotional}}, i.e., as comming from a presskit, but I'm afraid this information is wrong. This image comes from nobelprize.org, and the material from this site is not promotional at all. this image will have to be deleted anyway, sorry.

Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Misplaced Pages (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. I'm afraid that it probably is the case that we cannot use this image. We need to be able to credit the copyright holder of any media we are using, and there is no copyright holder information available at the source given for this. I think, however, that the Nobel Foundation is likely to try to be helpful. I recommend writing them a nice, polite Misplaced Pages:Boilerplate requests for permission-type letter asking them to release an image of Chandrasekhar under a free license. If that doesn't work out, I am not sure what to suggest. It would be quite an undertaking to try to track down another source for an image. Jkelly 23:47, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

No problem in referring me as Abu. The image is used by Nobel web at 140x198. If we want to make sure that our use of the image doesn't make their use obsolete (i.e: "Misplaced Pages's Chandrasekhar's bio already has a nice pic, I don't have to go to nobelprize.com's bio in order to see a good pic. There's nothing special about nobelprize.com"), we would have to use the image at a considerable smaller size. But do you think it would still be useful? I see that we would be diminishing nobelprize.com's value whenever we use the image at an web-resolution size, because that's how they make use of this image. It's my opinion that this is still a web-resolution p&b image that has pretty much the same effect as the one used (and owned) by nobelprize.com. My concerns, I fear, are still valid.

As a side (technical) note, you may want to know that it's possible (and preferable, in these cases) to upload a new version of an existing file under the same file name, automatically replacing all occurrences in Misplaced Pages, and avoiding the existence of a duplicate file on the server. You could have done that by following the link "Upload a new version of this file" on Image:Chandrasekhar.gif. For now, I would suggest you do ask for the removal of the duplicate file Image:Chandrasekhar.PNG by the means of the {{db-author}} tag. --Abu badali 20:24, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Tasoskessaris, please understand that what I'm trying to say is that this may not be simply a image resolution issue. Low resolution is important when we're reproducing some notable image, like a magazine cover (in an article about that magazine) or some noteworthy two-dimensional work of art. I don't see how we could make a fair use claim for freely using a non-notable image when the copyright holder has a business model based exactly on making money from third part use of this image. See item 5 of WP:FU#Counterexamples. Don't you think this is exactly that case, just generalizing "news agency" to "copyright holder willing to license image for a fee"? --Abu badali 23:10, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Let's move this debate to the deletion page please. As for the notability of the image the logic goes as follows: If the scientist gets a Nobel prize he becomes notable. If the notable Nobel foundation takes this notable scientist's picture and posts it in their notable website and many people see this picture then the picture itself becomes notable (i.e. prominent, one of the dictionary definitions of notable. Hey -- I don't know why people are picking on this particular image: the guy is dead and very significant. The biggest concern I have, actually, is the fair use claim: why is this a "historically significant photo"? That's the critical thing. Surely, not every picture of an important dead person is historically significant, but historically significant photos are generally permitted under fair use. Chances are, it's not historically significant, just some portrait.... can we find a photo of him winning the Nobel Prize? Then it could illustrate his winning of the nobel prize, which is historically significant. That said, this image will not be speedily deleted: you have done what you were required to do as an uploader, and the image deserves an WP:IFD debate at least at this point. Follow-up I have attempted to get released images from U of C for Chandrasekhar and other Nobel winners, as there are a lot from there, and they have this position:

I can't approve the image's use for Misplaced Pages. We've been through this before with other entries. The problem is, if I do, 
anyone can take the image from Misplaced Pages and do anything with it they want to. We're fairly lenient under most circumstances, 
and I'd be happy to approve its use for Misplaced Pages only, but I understand that the site's rules prohibit this.

this seems to be the growing theme I'm getting from many sources. Therefore, I am working on an essay that will be published in wikipedia to push the position that wiki is not ready for these strict guidlines, and we should moving it into a position where people want their content in here not us asking if content can be uploaded. Yeah, this image issue has certinly shaken the ground I walk on with Misplaced Pages. A lot of hard work, and for what, I wonder. But hopefully pressure could make things change. Greek etymologies

Hi Tasoskessaris. A cleanup project has been lying stagnant for months due to me "leaving" the wiki. Essentially, it's just standardising some etymologies from ancient Greek - the original contributions were mostly correct but some were transliterated etc. and the whole thing was generally a mess. Easy to find. There's really a guideline on this matter: WP:MOS#National varieties of English. Interestingly enough, it uses "center" (the word you corrected from my edit) as an example. I guess I've ran in to a hand-book mistake. :)

Your image deletion problem

Hi. I'm TechnoFaye and I'm writing this because you had perfectly good images you uploaded marked for deletion by Abu Bidali. You should know that he is "f***ing with you" and does it because he thinks it's funny; he even says so on his user page. It is particularly distressing to me when he does this to an academic such as yourself. More then 20 other editors just like us are parties to several formal complaints to Misplaced Pages in an effort to have him banned permanently for doing just what he did to you. Others have described him on the record as a "hoodlum" and a "vandal". My testimony was that "Bidali would be just as happy breaking antennas off cars at night". After he is gone, we can repair the damage he has done to WP. Thank you for your thoughtful response on my user page! Everything you said is true. It is also why I and many others have ceased contributing to Misplaced Pages, and why WP is becoming LESS useful instead of more. As an IT person, I have seen many initially-innovative organizations grow and flourish, and then sink into a defensive, CYA situation before withering away.

Misplaced Pages had SO much potential. Now it is run by lawyers and Abu Bidali.

Thank you very much for your valuable insight. WP is going through a tough period now. Everywhere there is anxiety. We also have the Essjay controversy as well. When the dust settles who knows what the conditions will be. I hope it won't be so bleak that I won't be able to have fun here anymore. As you mentioned organisations can lose momentum and bureaucracy can be an impeding factor that can stall the growth of any enterprise or project. I guess only time will tell. Engineering

I noticed your plea about medicine - I agree with you. However, it seems you are limiting the discussion to a comparison between medicine and mechanical engineering. I think the parallel is much broader. There's chemical engineering, for a start - pharmaceuticals would be nothing at all without it. Then there is ergonomics. Repetitive Stress Syndrome, anyone? What about systems management - figuring out how to get people to do things efficiently. Hospital admin? There are similar issues with convincing people to use new developments in both fields. Do you always use your seat belt? How about taking your medicine as prescribed, or doing the exercises the doctor recommended?

Maybe if you add some of these ideas into your discussion, it will be less subject to deletion by whoever it is that doesn't get it. Let me know if I can help. Cbdorsett 05:02, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Could you ask her to send an e-mail specifying the license (and the image being licensed) to permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org? I don't think so. This is a very delicate matter. On one hand how can you ask anyone unfamiliar with this bizarre copyright regulations about GFDL, back covers, front covers, creative commons etc. in an email without them thinking you are some sort of a mad salesman? Second you don't drag anyone into submitting such an email to an organisation they don't even know just prior to the email they received from me. Third if you attempt to communicate in human terms not just legalistic jargon from outer space your approach is called by others disingenuous. Fourth even if they send such an email how do they identify themselves? Must they show credentials and be verified like our recent debate? I sacrificed some of my personal privacy to copy the letter, they so graciously sent me, to the discussion page of the image. But it was not enough. However it was an ill considered idea on my part to volunteer for this arduous, thankless, time consuming, diplomatically difficult and ultimately useless exercise. My esteemed correspondents graciously allowed us to use the image and in the process they de facto recognised the importance of Misplaced Pages. This is historic for Misplaced Pages yet nobody cares. Now we want them to identify themselves to an unfamiliar for them organisation. This nonsense has gone far enough. I consider this debate closed. Do what you must Abu badali. As advised on Help:Show preview, please try using the "Show preview" button instead of "Save page", otherwise the history becomes full and too hard to use. Dr.K., I'm sorry for the delayed reply. I am of the same mind as Jkelly - it doesn't seem like there is much to object to regarding the use of the images. Are the images included in the article now? Are you still having issues? If you say "yes" to the latter, I would recommend getting a Misplaced Pages:Third opinion ... its an informal step in the dispute resolution process. Apology on Corfu

I know that it was rude and I apologize if it offended you. I did not know (and still don't) who wrote that particular section, but I could not help the exclamation when I saw it. Seeing things like "not to conquer, but to defend", or "multi-ethnic cooperation", which is a neologism associated rather with the UN than with multi-ethnic empires (I mean, in this sense, Darius' campaign in Greece was a "very early example of multi-ethnic cooperation"), irritates me no ends. Not just because it is incorrect, or ahistorical, but because it is like coming from a badly-written bulletin of a propaganda office (e.g. this "saving Western civilization" thing)... I'm not posing myself as perfect or anything, but this is one of the few things I can't stand, hence my reaction. I'll try to avoid such remarks in the future... I know editing in Misplaced Pages is difficult. Edit summaries sometimes don't help either. In the heat of the moment you find something that sounds silly and you just describe it as such in the edit summary. That's understandable. It is your opinion and I respect that. The only problem is in the very same edit summary it was also asked: who writes this nonsense? And I said: I wrote that! In the heat of the moment I answered and then the momentum of the conversation (in the field of the edit summaries) took us much further than I intended. The not to conquer, but to defend was explained to me by a friend historian in Corfu. Sounded plausible and I put it in. If you go back in the history of the article you'll see that was one of my earlier edits before citations etc. became the vogue. In retrospect I should have tried another source or citation for this (if it could be found) but I just forgot about it.

Going into multiethnic cooperation now, I wanted to portray a sense of a primitive form of voluntary multiethnic cooperation in Europe that could be considered a precursor or early model of current events. I know my intention was not to propagandise but to make an analogy for current events with an early model. On retrospect this may sound like Monday morning quarterbacking, anachronistic, ahistorical or even propagandistic but my first reaction was to create a model in an Engineering sense. Are Engineering modelling methods incompatible with historical analysis? Who's to say? Besides my model is one of millions of ideas included in Misplaced Pages. My point is that editing Misplaced Pages should not be so painful. If my idea is wrong; fine, let's edit it out. If the reasons and motives behind an edit are not clear then unfavourable descriptions of such an edit in an edit summary can lead to more needless arguments. As far as Darius he was rather short on Democracy. His type of multiethnic cooperation was not of the voluntary kind so he is excluded as an early model of voluntary multi ethnic cooperation.

To cut to the chase what I learned from this is, first, that spur of the moment conversations in the field of edit summaries are not conducive to calm and reasoned debate and should be avoided. Second, an apology was not my objective from this debate, so you do not need to apologise for something that you wrote in the spur of the moment and since we both fell victims to the edit summary conversation trap as explained above. But I really appreciate the gesture of your message because it gave me the opportunity to expand on this and I hope it helps a few other well intentioned editors in the future. Take care. Τάσος. Scientists at Bell Labs

Hi there - Thought you might like to know about this, since you created the category. I was working on Category:American scientists, trying to sort through & arrange the sub-categories, when it dawned on me that there was no sub-cat for Bell Laboratories scientists, even though there was one for Category:Haskins Laboratories scientists. So I went off on a little search, and discovered that, sure enough, there was already a Category:Scientists at Bell Labs, crammed full of names as I expected. I've now added it into Category:American scientists.

However, I'm wondering if there were an appreciable number of scientists who were not actually American, but just happened to work for Bell Labs. I checked a few of the unfamiliar names, but all of them had, in fact, permanently emigrated to the United States. Do you happen to know of any who wouldn't qualify as "American scientists", or do you think it's okay to leave the category where it is? (If need be, it can be moved up to Category:Scientists). Good question. I don't know of any foreign scientists at Bell Labs. It seems possible that a few visiting scholars might have worked there. I think that moving it to scientists would cover this. On the other hand if it can be established that Bell Labs are only open to American residents, given that they performed some sensitive military research, then the American scientists category should be chosen. Copyright message

I sympathize, I personally think the Misplaced Pages "no fair use images of live people" is a little bizarre and makes the encyclopedia a less visually appealing place. That said though, I can see the motivation so we might as well try to work with it. What would be great is if you could email the host of the picture and ask them to release the image with the GFDL or something - it is a good picture. Good luck! Hi, Tasoskessaris. You will probably notice sooner or later that User:Lupo commented at commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Georgakis monument in Corfu.JPG. I reviewed the translation into English of the Greek copyright law he linked to, which is at http://www.wipo.int/clea/docs_new/pdf/en/gr/gr219en.pdf. Anyways, I think his assessment is correct. Specifically, the document says, "The occasional reproduction and communication by the mass media of images of architectural works, fine art works, photographs or works of applied art, which are sited permanently in a public place, shall be permissible, without the consent of the author and without payment" (§26 of the linked pdf). ... that is unfortunately not "free" in terms of Commons.

You still can upload your photograph to here, the English-language Misplaced Pages. Make sure to use {{Non-free 3D art}}, and add {{Non-free use rationale}}.

Note, however, that it should be fine to upload photographs of architectural works, fine art works, photographs or works of applied art which are no longer copyrighted to Commons. Copyright in Greece lasts "for the whole of the author’s life and for seventy (70) years after his death, calculated from 1st January of the year after the author’s death" (§29 of the linked pdf). It may be a bit more complicated than that, especially with the 93/98/EEC Directive, but I think you will always be safe if you assume that copyright expires 70 years after death. --Iamunknown 21:10, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

It was a story that had to be told. When I saw how scattered the information was on the web and that the article did not cover the things that give the straight razor the edge over the competition, (maybe you can forgive the pun but you are not obliged to do so), and all these citation needed tags I knew that I had to tell a better story about this venerable engineering artifact. I also did it as a fan and for fun and for all the people who wonder what this is all about. I really appreciate you taking the time to give me some feedback. Όπως θα διαπιστώσεις με μία μικρή ανάγνωση, τούρκοι συγγραφείς όπως Deliogul, Kudret Abi και άλλα πρακτόρια της ΜΙΤ έχουν οργιάσει, μετατρέποντας το άρθρο σε ένα ανεπανάληπτο και ανιστόρητο εγκώμιο για το σφαγέα Κεμάλ χωρίς την παραμικρή μνεία για ό,τι έκανε στη Σμύρνη, στον Πόντο και σε βάρος των Αρμενίων, Κούρδων κτλ. Εγώ προσπάθησα επανειλημμένα να βάλω έστω και μία μικρή παραγραφούλα για τα καμώματά του. Την παραθέτω εδώ για να την δεις επειδή δεν έχει κάτι το ακραίο ούτε ως προς το περιεχόμενο ούτε ως προς τη διατύπωση:

Mustafa Kemal is however remembered both by Greeks and Armenians as the one who continued and brought into conclusion the process of extermination of the Christian populations of Asia Minor which started by the regime of the Young Turks and culminated in the Armenian Genocide (around 1.500.000 victims) and the Pontian Genocide (aprox.700.000 victims). Ζητώ την βοήθειά σου, ώστε το άρθρο για τον Κεμάλ να περιέχει την ιστορική αλήθεια και όχι (μόνο) εγκώμια για τον ολετήρα αυτό του Μικρασιατικού και Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού. Γενικότερα, σε καλώ να συνεργασθούμε για να αντιμετωπίσουμε την τουρκική διαβολή στη Βικιπαίδεια και την προσπάθεια εξωραϊσμού που επιχειρούν σε διάφορα άρθρα για τις ελληνοτουρκικές σχέσεις και την ιστορία. Σκεπτόμενος πόσα άρθρα για τη Βόρεια Ήπειρο άλλαξα από μόνος μου και πέτυχα να καθιερωθούν παρά την προσπάθεια των Αλβανών, είμαι βέβαιος ότι μπορούμε να επιτύχουμε πολλά μαζί αν συνεργασθούμε.
