Atlanta Artists is a sub-label of Polygram Records , found by Larry Blackmon from the group Cameo. After Cameo's 7th album , Knights of the Sound Table from 1981 , Larry took the decision to pace down the group from 10 members to a 5-member unit. This change of strategy was made as a result of the economical situation within the music industry at that time. Larry's chosen direction had Cameo locate at a new area , and moved from New York to Atlanta, Georgia.
With their core of 5 members, they represented themselves on the new album , Alligator Woman which is a fusion of funk, new wave and a synthesizer-driven sound ( compared to their previous albums which had more horn-arrangements ).
The album Style followed in 1983 as the first release for Atlanta Artists. They continued their new-headed direction in recording and added electronic drums to their productions. This new created sound was a blue-print for their following albums.
The funkgroup Ca$hflow and solo-artist Barbara Mitchell ( formely in the female group , High Inergy ) signed and released for the label ,
while Larry produced also artists on other labels :
- Tomi Jenkins - 1989 / Elektra
- Bobby Brown - 1986 / MCA
- The Reddings - 1985 / Polydor
- George Howard - 1990 / GRP
During Cameo's popular concert-tours in the UK around the mid 80's, Ca$hflow traveled along with them as support-act.
Polygram ended the distribution of Atlanta Artists-releases around 1991 , with the last few productions as a combination with Mercury Records.
