Pauline Fowler is a fictional character in the popular British soap opera EastEnders.
She is the daughter of Lou Beale and the mother of the Fowler family, she has been played by Wendy Richard since the show started in 1985, one of only two characters to do so. She has a fondness for cardigans and an unshakable faith in the curative properties of a nice cup of tea.
She likes to think herself as a family woman and she often refers to the importance of family back in the day. However, it could be argued she is more to blame for driving away her family, her constant nagging drove her husband Arthur to despair and adultery. She harassed daughter Michelle, who then left for America. Even now she continues to interfere with the personal life of son Martin and daughter-in law Sonia.
Throughout her time she has remained good friends with Dot Branning and often makes reference to her Arthur who died in 1996; "Well I know what my Arthur would say about this". The statements that follow are often wildly at variance with Arthur's retiring personality as seen on screen.
