Plot
After their mother gets a new job, the Carlin family moves from small town Ohio to the big city of Los Angeles, California. Siblings Spencer, Glenn and adopted African American Clay must adjust to a new school, friends, and problems and must try and survive in a place where everyone else is also trying to find their identity. - When Spencer goes to talk to her Dad it looks like she is wearing the same clothes she was wearing the day before. You can tell it's the next day because this is after her nightmare. Then later after she talked to her Dad she is wearing different clothes.
- If you watch carefully you will notice that while Spencer is talking to her Dad outside, her sweater is covering her shoulder then it isn't then it is again.
- In Spencer's opening voice over that introduces this episode she says that they are moving from Ohio. The shot that accompanies this shows three flags. The middle is the state flag of Ohio and it's flanked on both sides by Rainbow flags.
- "South of Nowhere" is the first show focusing on a lesbian that is directed towards younger viewers in the United States, or teens.
