Felix G. Rohatyn (b.1929) is an American businessman and investment banker with a long and distinguished career in public service. He is married to Elizabeth Fly Rohatyn and has three children.
Early Life
He received his a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Middlebury College in Vermont in 1949.
Career in finance
He joined the investment bank Lazard Freres and Company in 1949, becoming partner in 1961, and later becoming Managing Director. He was on the Board of the New York Stock Exchange from 1968-1972.
Mr. Rohatyn is a holocaust survivor. Having fled France he and his families left with forged papers. He is alive today because a guard chose to light his cigarette and wave his family on rather than scrutinize his family's paperwork.
New York City bailout and Municipal Assistance Corporation, 1970s
From 1975 to 1993, he was Chairman of the Municipal Assistance Corporation (MAC) of the City of New York, where he managed New York City's financial crisis.
Diplomacy and Foreign Policy credentials
He served as United States Ambassador to France from 1997 to 2000 during the second Clinton Administration and is a Commander in the French Legion of Honor. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
