Before the first game, Joe is just a movie fanatic that idolizes ], his favorite movie character and superhero. However, while watching a Captain Blue movie with his girlfriend, ], a shadowy figure defeats Captain Blue and, defying the normal movie's script, reaches from the screen to pull Silvia into it, claiming her as his prize. Captain Blue's robot, '''Six Majin''', tries to intervene but is punched out of the movie by the figure, and it takes Joe back with it. Upon getting his bearings, Joe is confronted by Captain Blue, who gives him a '''V-Watch''' and urges him to fight on in Blue's absence. By saying the word "Henshin!" (which Joe stylizes into his own catchphrase, "Henshin-a-go-go, baby!"), Joe is able to transform into a superpowered hero. He later adopts the name of Viewtiful Joe after ] comments that his fighting style is "Viewtiful".

In '''Viewtiful Joe''', Joe enters Movieland to rescue his girlfriend (Silvia) from the clutches of the '''Jadow''', a secret organization that kidnapped her for sinister reasons and defeated the resident hero, Captain Blue. Early on, Blue gives Joe a V-Watch (which allows him to transform into Viewtiful Joe and gives him fanastic powers). After battling Alastor, Joe learns that the Jadow discovered that they lived in a movie, and that if movies became obsolete they would be forever forgotten about. They decided to escape Movieland into the Real World, but to do so, needed the creator's (director's) DNA. Alastor also gives Joe the name "Viewtiful Joe"). He eventually succeeds in killing the Jadow's leader, only to find that Captain Blue was behind it all along. Blue, who was the original director of the Captain Blue movies and is Silvia's father, needed Silvia as a sacrifice to escape Movieland, but Joe got in the way trying to save her. When he attempts to kill her, Joe intervenes, and the two battle, with Joe as the ultimate victor. Captain Blue reveals his past (see the Captain Blue section), and Silvia and Joe are able to convince him to join the good guys again. In the end, Silvia reveals her aspirations to become a hero herself, convinces her father to give her a V-Watch, and joins Joe just as aliens invade the Earth.

In '''Viewtiful Joe 2''', Joe and Silvia fight the evil and alien '''Gedow''' to obtain the Rainbow Oscars, powerful artifacts that would somehow allow them to control the world (they also take Blue out of the picture by turning him into an Oscar), and the mysterious '''Black Film'''. Along the way, Joe is assisted by his father ], who owns the theater their movie is playing in, by changing out the reels. The heroes defeat the Gedow, but upon reaching the Gedow's leader, the Dark Emperor, they are horrified to find that Jet was the leader of the evil organization all along, and is the Dark Emperor. The heroes battle Jet, but Jet, powered by the '''Black V-Watch''', brings the fight into the Real World (during a movie awards ceremony) where Joe and Silvia's V-Watches don't work, but Jet's Black V-Watch still does. However, the cheering of the audience empowers their V-Watches anyway, allowing them to defeat Jet. The heroes convince Jet to abandon evil, but just after doing so, a mysterious castle appears in the real world as well, awaiting their next adventure.

In '''Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble''', Joe's sister ] joins the cast as an up-and-coming actress that Blue (back to his directing) casts in his new movie. However, the reel is stolen by a new menace, the '''Madow'''. It is revealed that the Madow work for one Queen Heinderella, who goes around stealing the essence of the hero, '''Hero-ness''', from movie heroes, and that Blue's new film with Jasmine in it contained the very essence of Hero-ness. With help from Silvia (who uses a special camera to allow Joe to use his powers in the real world) and Jasmine, Heinderella is defeated. However, it turns out that Heinderella was actually Joe's long-dead mother Junko, who received one day on Earth from Heaven and wanted to see Joe in action to see how strong he had become. Junko praises Joe in a teary goodbye for the three family members who are finally reunited, if only for a few minutes.

In '''Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble''', Blue is shooting a new movie, but can't decide who to cast as the star, though Joe is his prime candidate for most of the game. However, a new enemy, ], a ghost inhabiting a magic megaphone, attempts to destroy Blue's work in revenge for never showing movie equipment in movies despite their large role in creating them. Joe defeats Tsukumo, and convinces him that movie equipment is still valued even if it isn't shown.

As Viewtiful Joe, Joe has special effects-based abilities for powers. They include Slow, which slows all of the action around Joe, Mach Speed, which speeds up Joe, and finally Zoom, which centers the screen on himself. In the first game, he is only able to use his powers in movies; but at the end of ''Viewtiful Joe'' 2 he demonstrated, when in the real world, that his '''V-Watch''' will respond when in front of a cheering audience, enabling him to transform out of the movie. Without an audience, such as in '']'', Joe requires a special camcorder, the '''V-Cam''', to record his actions for the V-Watch to work. The colors associated with Joe (his costume and aura's color) is red and pink.

Over the series, Joe has shown the most VFX powers out of any character. In the first two games, these were Slow, Mach Speed, and Zoom.
'''Slow''' (the quintessential slow motion move) allows Joe to slow down action in the movie, which makes his standard attacks hit harder. It also lets him deflect bullets and most projectiles back to their source, dodge most types of attacks in slow motion (though more powerful attacks will still hit him), and perform an ]. '''Mach Speed''' causes Joe to move at extremely high speeds: he runs and hits faster, can set himself aflame with friction, and when he attacks, send out afterimagines to attack nearby foes (giving the illusion that he moves even faster than he really does). Mach Speed can be used in conjuncion with Slow to make Joe move at normal speed while everything else is slowed down. '''Zoom''' centers all attention on Joe, allowing him more powerful attacks (a spin-kick, powerful punching combo, corkscrew jump, and shockwave) that double as puzzle-solving attacks. Zoom can be used in conjunction with Slow to let Joe do the Red Hot One Hundred, a powerful move that lets him attack a single enemy with a flurry of extra-strong punches. These powers remained in ].

In ''Double Trouble'', his powers expanded to include Scratch (which causes debris to fall on nearby enemies and puzzles), Slide (which acts as a more puzzle-oriented version of Zoom, but is functionally very similiar), Split (which lets Joe manipulate the upper part of the screen to his advantage), and Touch (which stuns stronger enemies and kills weaker ones). In ], Slow, Mach Speed, and Zoom remain, and are joined by a new move called '''Special Effects''', which create damaging soundwaves in the direction he slams the ground.

Joe's arsenal also includes Voomerangs, boomerang-like blades thrown from the V-emblem on Joe's helmet (when held long enough, the emblem opens up to form a ]-like weapon), Shocking Pink, a short fused bomb (that Silvia later adopts as her own weapon), and later, a VFO, which replaces the Voomerangs of old and which when ugraded, can hit opponents and fire lasers.

Joe can also commandeer the '''Six Machine''' (more than likely a play on James Brown's song ]), a robot with various forms (which include a plane, a submarine, a motorcycle, a drill, and a bazooka). Most of these forms were shown in ''VJ2''. When fighting larger opponents (such as King Blue, who was fought on the earth's surface), Joe can call on the '''Mega MegaBot Six Majin''', a large robot with an appearance similar to Joe (albeit with a head within its torso and a distorted deep voice). During the transformation sequence, Six Machine's plane form enters the singular horn of Six Majin (which makes hearkens back to the fact that Six Majin originally was Captain Blue's robot) and makes up the "V" on Six Majin's head. For extremely large opponents (such as the Dark Kaiser, which was fought in the solar system), Joe and Silvia can call on the '''Giga Megabot Six-Six'''. This even larger robot is comprised of both '''Six Majin''' and '''Great Six Machine''' (a giant robot similar to Six Machine's plane form and piloted by Silvia). Six Majin forms the head and Great Six Machine forms the body. Unlike Six Majin, Six-Six can switch between forms resembling Joe and Silvia and there is no voice distortion (with the exception of a metallic echo).

Viewtiful Joe is the main character of the series, who is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker in the games, and by Jason Palmer in the animated series. He is originally just a movie fanatic that idolizes Captain Blue, his favorite movie character. One day while watching a movie with his girlfriend, Silvia, a shadowy figure defeats Captain Blue and and reaches from the screen to pull Silvia into it. Captain Blue's robot, Six Majin, is punched out of the movie by the figure, and it takes Joe back with it. Joe is confronted by Captain Blue, who gives him a V-Watch. This allows him to transform into his alter ego, Viewtiful Joe, whenever Joe says the word "henshin". Joe obtains the name from his rival, Stylish Alastor, after he exclaims "Viewtiful!" at the sight of Joe's fighting skills.

Viewtiful Joe has the power to slow down the movie, speed it up, and to zoom into the picture, much like camera effects seen in movies. At first, he is only able to use his powers in movies; However in Viewtiful Joe 2 he demonstrated, when in the real world, that his V-Watch will respond when in front of an audience, enabling him to transform out of the movie. His inability is again apparent in Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble when he attempts to transform with nobody around, this is solved when Silvia points her special camcorder, The V-Cam, at Joe. Joe's arsenal also includes Voomerangs, boomerang-like blade weapon thrown from Joe's helmet; and Shocking Pink, which is a short fused bomb.

Sexy Silvia

Sexy Silvia (real name possibly Silvia Blue) is the title character's girlfriend in Capcom's popular sleeper-hit, Viewtiful Joe. She is voiced by Christina Puccelli in the games, and by Philece Sampler (credited as "Jessie Green") in the English anime.

In the first game, she and Joe were on a date at the local movie theater (revealed in the second game to be owned by Joe's dad), specifically to see a rather old Captain Blue film that Joe's been dying to see. Disappointed, Silvia attempts to get some romance going, but is then stolen away by the movie's villain, who literally pulls Silvia into the movie. Joe gets pulled into Movieland as well, thus setting off the events of the first game.

Joe later reunites with Silvia at the Jadow base, with Silvia all locked up in a cage, and she shows her annoyance with Joe by complaining that he was too busy showing off to even think about her. However, the reunion is short-lived, as the same villain from earlier takes her away to the final level. At the final part of the game, the villain reveals himself as Captain Blue, who then proceeds to reveal that he is Silvia's long-lost father (originally presumed dead by his family). However, despite this plot twist, Joe manages to defeat Blue and save Silvia.

In the final scene, Silvia and Blue reconcile just as a UFO invasion (the Gedow) attacks. Realizing that she hasn't done anything since arriving in Movieland, Silvia manages to convince her father to give her a V-Watch of her own, allowing her to fight alongside Joe as Sexy Silvia.

Silvia has her own story in the game as well. It is nearly identical to Joe's, but she has to save her twin sister, Goldie, instead, and some of the dialogue is different. It turns out this time that her father was going to try to sacrifice Goldie so that he and Silvia would become more powerful. The ending is near identical as well. Its canonicity is questionable, however.

Viewtiful Joe 2 takes place immediately after the ending of Viewtiful Joe, with Silvia and Joe going down to Earth to protect it from the evil Gedow, only for both of them to be transported to a jungle and for Captain Blue to be turned into a Rainbow Oscar, an object of great power in Movieland. She and Joe set out to stop Gedow, find the Rainbow Oscars, and save her father. It's shown throughout the game that Silvia has quite the mouth and attitude, which tends to trigger a fair share of fights.

In Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble, Silvia operates the V-Cam, which allows Joe to be transformed as long as he is being filmed by it, while taking directions from her father, who treats the crisis as an opportunity for a new movie.

In Red Hot Rumble, she is one of the actors fighting for the role of Blue's successor. She was also the players' main rival in the Truth of the Black Film story.

Unlike Joe (whose mannerisms are reminiscient of Japanese tokusatsu superheroes), most of Silvia's attacks and poses show off her playful and alluring side (hence her name). In the first game, Silvia is a secret playable character but is identical to Joe save that she is faster and jumps higher, but takes more damage when hit. In VJ2, however, she distinguishes herself with a different moveset: instead of punching, she is equipped with two guns (and a punching-glove gun in her unhenshined form), and has various move changes (instead of a spin-kick like Joe, she slams into enemies when Zoomed in). Finally, instead of Joe's Mach Speed, Silvia has Replay, which replays an action (such as a kick) three times, allowing three times the damage when timed correctly. When pulled off, it also makes her sparkle with electricity like Mach Speed makes Joe burn with fire.

In non-Henshined form, Silvia is blonde with hazel eyes, and wears glasses. In the first game, she wears an aqua blue jacket/skirt with six white buttons and a silver belt with dark stockings and black high-heeled shoes. In the second game, she uses "movie magic" to instantly change her clothes after having her powers taking away (Joe attempts to do the same thing, but merely manages to add a "V" emblem to his hat). She wears a pink skirt with a black belt, and a white scarf, fingerless gloves, and knee-high boots for her normal outfit, but her super hero costume is the same. This her look in all subsequent games.

Her superhero costume is the same color as her dress, with a helmet with a purple visor and instead of a cape, she has a long, blonde ponytail. She wears the same stockings with knee-high white boots and white elbow long gloves (the gloves are not present in the first game), with a sleavless bodysuit, and an abnormally short skirt and belt. During major fights, Silvia adjusts the costume into a two-piece cheerleader's outfit, showing more of her skin in the process. The color associated with Silvia is green: her costume and aura are both green.

Captain Blue

Captain Blue is voiced by Gregg Berger in the games. He is voiced in the Viewtiful Joe anime by Banjō Ginga in the original Japanese, and by the late Bob Papenbrook and later by George C. Cole in the English dub. There is some evidence that his real last name may actually be "Blue", as he goes by "Director Blue" when making movies.

In Viewtiful Joe, Captain Blue appears to be an ordinary movie superhero, until Joe gets sucked into the movie. There, an aged Blue (with a gray mustache and a bulging pot belly) who had been defeated by the evil Jadow organization gives Joe a V-Watch and helps him "awaken to his hero-ness", teaching him the powers of VFX and fighting him in practice battles.

However, it is eventually revealed that Captain Blue is actually the villain of the game, the gigantic being known as King Blue, being the one responsible for kidnapping Silvia and manipulating the Jadow for his own personal goal: to escape Movieland and dominate the real world. Joe, piloting Six Majin, defeats King Blue, forcing him to revert to normal size and into a younger, fitter form (with a blonde mustache and a trim muscular body). After Joe defeats him, Captain Blue, snapped out of his evil ways (and returned to his older form), reveals his past. He was originally a movie director famous for his superhero movies, and was hailed as the most revolutionary director of his time. But as time passed, the audience moved on from the fad and Blue was soon forgotten. Then, one day, Blue was inexplicibly transported into the Movieland of his own creation, and was given the chance to be a hero for real. However, in the process, Blue began to forget all about his family, and, in time, succumbed to the growing darkness in his soul (wanting revenge on the audience that spurned him).

By beating the game on the hardest difficulty (Ultra V-Rated), Captain Blue becomes playable in his older, pot-bellied form. His story is mostly the same as Joe's, except that he has to save his wife, Ivory (who is presumably Silvia and Goldie's mother). The bosses recognize him as the "heroic" Captain Blue they used to fight in his prime, and not as the leader of Jadow, and the final battle involves him fighting his "dark side" to purge the evil from Movieland and atone for his sins. The canonicity of this sidestory is debatably.

In Viewtiful Joe 2, Blue plays a more minor role, having been turned into a Rainbow Oscar (against the script), the objects Gedow are looking for. He is freed in the ending, where he reveals that he and Jet (Joe's father) are old friends (see Jet's article for more information). Although he demands to know the origin of Jet's Black V-Watch and Black Film, Jet stalls him until it's revealed that only in Viewtiful Joe 3 (which has not been made) will Blue find out.

In Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble Blue plays a minor role: In the opening, he is starring as Captain Blue, rescuing Jasmine (Joe's sister) in a new movie, but the unfinished work is stolen by the Madow. He sees the Madow attacking Joe as an opportunity to make a new movie, and has Silvia use the V-cam to both record Joe's attacks on film for use in a movie and allow him to transform even though they're in the real world. In the ending, Blue is very pleased with the finished work.

Captain Blue is a playable character in Red Hot Rumble, as well as being part of the story. The players are fighting for the lead role in Blue's new movie. Three different versions of Captain Blue are playable; Captain Blue, Director Blue (his non-henshin version) and Young Captain Blue, as he appears on his past movies. Unsurprisingly, the color associated with Captain Blue is blue, which he believes is the color of justice.

In the anime, Blue's role pretty much mirrors his role in the game, with his dark character of Almighty Leader mostly shown as a giant silhouette with an echoing voice. When Joe managed to get into Jadow headquarters, he finds Silvia, only to see her adbucted by the evil leader who then activated the Jadow base's self-destuct sequence. Once Joe arrived at the stadium, the Almighty Leader was revealed to be none other than Captain Blue, who attempted to break Joe's spirit and thus devasatated Joe mentally before destroying him physically. Captain Blue announces that he is King Blue, and transforms into his omnipotent form. But the words of those Joe had befriended in his adventure enabled Joe's confidence to return and fight Blue back. King Blue was defeated by Joe, piloting the Six Majin.

Blade Master Alastor

Blade Master Alastor (also known as Stylish Alastor and simply Alastor) is an electrical demon from the Underworld, nicknamed The Midnight Thunderboy. He is voiced by Mikey Kelley in the games, and Ross Lawerence in the anime. Though he is originally allied with Jadow, Alastor doesn't give much thought about his position. In his own words, he "doesn't give a rip" about Jadow's plans to invade the real world, but instead longs to seek out "the ultimate battle", and can be considered an anti-hero to an extent. He sees himself as the arch-rival of Joe (Joe seems to agree to this), and always appears with the intent to defeat him.

In all games he mainly appears in Blade Master form as a humanoid figure in purple spandex and light body armor. He wears a helmet with a pair of purple ibex horns, and has wings and a pointed tail. In Viewtiful Joe and Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble he also appears in an un-Henshined Stylish form, where he has pointed ears and spiked black hair, and wears a black suit with a white stole embroidered with winged skulls.

In Viewtiful Joe, the first game, Alastor first meets Joe while disguised as him (Another Joe) in the chapter "The Viewtiful Escape", but drops the act and escapes after losing the fight. Later, Joe and Alastor meet outside the Jadow base, where Alastor reads from the game script and tells Joe of Jadow's plans. Despite losing both battles, he expresses awe and admiration of Joe's "viewtiful" fighting skills, which Joe adapts into his Viewtiful title. In the end, Alastor dies as a result of wounds taken during battle.

Alastor can also be unlocked as a playable character in VJ1 by completing it on V-Rated mode. Like the other extra characters in the game, his play mechanics are similar to Joe. However, he cannot Henshin (or, as he calls it, Devil Trigger) automatically. Instead, Alastor transforms upon player input, after which the VFX gauge constantly drains while he's transformed. In the Alastor storyline, he challenges Captain Blue while watching one of his movies with Silvia's twin sister Goldie. Blue then kidnaps Goldie, leading Alastor to follow them into the movie to fight. At first he shows little interest in Goldie and refers to her as "Hey" or "Woman", despite her constant flirting. In the end, however, after saving her and she gets her own V-Watch, he does show some feelings for her, and they both fly off. The canonicity of this sidestory is unknown.

In Viewtiful Joe 2, Alastor is resurrected and shows up for another fight as the fourth stage boss. At first the fight is similar to fight in the first game, and Alastor loses. However, he gains unexpected help when Joe's father, Jet, starts playing the Black Film. As a result of his powers being amplified by the film's evil, Alastor transforms into Underworld Emperor Alastor, a powerful bestial demon. Despite this unforeseen setback, Alastor is defeated again, but to everyone's surprise, is exiled into the real world (although dismayed, this didn't end up being a problem for him).

In Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble, Alastor appears yet again. Alastor forces Joe not only to fight him, but to fight him in his original stage from Viewtiful Joe 1. The battle is in two parts, with the first being face-to-face. After losing the first round, Alastor summons a giant robot, the Rex Majin, and continues the fight against Joe's Six Majin. After losing the battle, Queen Heindriella arrives to destroy Joe, but Alastor takes the blow instead, declaring that no one's going to ruin Joe's undefeated record but him.

In RHR, Alastor appears in both Blade Master and Stylish forms. Each character in the game gets an extra costume, and Alastor's are both derived from clothing he wore in the anime. Blade Master Alastor gets the purple wedding suit and carnation he wore in episode 15, and Stylish Alastor gets the octopus costume he wore in episode 17. In story mode, Alastor's stage is the first level, and is set in a South American style temple similar to his stage in VJ1. In RHR, he is portrayed as somewhat vain, and wants to star in the movie that Captain Blue is casting for.

Alastor's character is a nod towards the Devil May Cry series, which Hideki Kamiya also created prior to the Viewtiful Joe series. Much of Alastor's attacks are performed in the same style as that of Dante with the aid of the Alastor or Sparda swords, and Alastor's very appearance is based off the demon form Dante assumed in "Devil Trigger" mode. Also, in VJ2, when Alastor is transformed into his Underworld Emperor form, he quotes the same words spoken by the sword in the first DMC game ("The weak shall give their heart, and swear their eternal loyalty to me.") before attempting to impale Joe in much the same way as the sword did Dante (though unlike Dante, Joe dodges the attack). The color associated with Alastor is purple.

Dante appears as a playable character in the Playstation 2 port of VJ1, and when he meets Alastor their dialog indicates that Alastor the character is the spirit that animated the Alastor sword in the first Devil May Cry game. Alastor accuses Dante of treating him badly and forgetting about him, then challenges him to a fight to see who is the strongest. When Alastor loses, Dante promises to be faithful, but Alastor leaves saying he "needs to have a cry". This is continued in the PSP version of Red Hot Rumble, in the first story mode level. In the last two stages of the level, Dante makes an appearance on set, much to Alastor's dismay. Alastor also holds a grudge for Dante not taking him on vacation.

In the anime, Alastor is similar to his video game counterpart. He works for Jadow but cares only about fighting Joe, even though he tends to act more seriously than in the games. He considers himself Joe's rival, dispite his questioning of Joe's methods. As in the game, Alastor was the one who gave Joe the inspiration for his hero name. He harbors a small crush on Silvia, and has shown a softer side to his personality. This could be a reference to him dating Silvia's twin sister Goldie in the games. Near the end of the Jadow arc, he restrained Fire Leo as they both fell into the void that surrounded Jadow headquarters during Fire Leo's fight with Joe. However, Alastor promised to survive so that he and Joe could finally settle their rivalry. The second half, yet to be seen in the US, shows that Alastor cannot switch freely between Blade Master and Stylish forms, and there is a long, multi-episode story arc related to this. This could be a reference to his playing style in VJ1, as the player had to voluntarily trigger Alastor's transformations to and from Blade Master form.

In a sort-of running gag, the narrator claims that Alastor has been killed after his fights with Joe, only for Alastor to reappear completely healthy in the next game. Similarly enough, in the first two games, Alastor reappears after his "death" in the movies and complains about his lack of screen time, the first time to the players in VJ1, and the second to Jet in VJ2.

Characters in Viewtiful Joe (1)

JADOW

JADOW is the codename for the sinister organization that Joe initially fights in the first game. Their forces are many and their influence is wide. The most common foot soldiers in JADOW are the Biankies, humanoid robots that often attack in swarms.

Fire Leo

Inferno Lord Fire Leo (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson in VJ1 and Dave Fennoy in Red Hot Rumble), is the strongest member of Jadow, to the point where he's the leader of the organization (though he is secretly subordinate to King Blue). Fire Leo appears just as Joe reunites with Silvia, and attempts to offer Joe a position in Jadow in exchange for control over half the world, with Silvia to boot. Joe, naturally, refuses the offer, starting the conflict.

In combat, Leo launches flaming rocks all around the field, breathes fireballs in all sorts of patterns, and claws at Joe with his mighty paws. His most dangerous attack is a high-speed spin where he repeatedly claws Joe, though if Joe can dodge all the swipes, he can turn the tables and counterattack while Leo is dazed.

He is mentioned in VJ2 by his brother, Frost Tiger.

In Red Hot Rumble, he appears alongside his brother Frost Tiger as a boss. He is not a playable character.

In the anime, Fire Leo (voiced by Udel R. Deet) developed a grudge on Joe for being referred to a dog when he is clearly a lion, and his fiery mane extinguished in his first defeat by Joe. He's one of few Jadow members to question Alastor's loyalties. When Joe arrived to Jadow HQ, Fire Leo wanted to kill Joe and overpowered him. At the last second, Fire Leo was restrained by Alastor as they fell into the void that surrounds Jadow headquarters. Later into the Gedow saga, he appears to fight his brother Frost Tiger.

Charles the Third

Dark Fiend Charles the Third (voiced by Roger Rose) is a bat-like agent of Jadow. He is often found napping, but, when awake, he shows himself to be quite arrogant and snobbish. Despite several attacks, such as launching energy rings and drilling into Joe with his body, Charles was defeated by Joe in battle, marking the new hero's first major victory.

He appears in Red Hot Rumble as a playable character, and seems to be friends with Hulk Davidson and Gran Bruce.

In the anime, Charles (voiced by Terrence Stone and given a French accent) is largely the same character, though he appears to have feelings for Sprocket (which she definitely doesn't return). He, Hulk Davidson, and Gran Bruce were fired for their incompentence after serval attempts to do away with Joe and were banished to the real world upon King Blue's defeat.

Hulk Davidson

Iron Ogre Hulk Davidson (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson in VJ1 and Dave Fennoy in Red Hot Rumble) is a rhino-like agent of Jadow. According to Hulk, he is the one who was responsible for Captain Blue's scar. He fights with a massive battle axe and a deadly charge attack (which is actually the most powerful attack in the game), and also launches fire bombs and missiles from hidden launchers around the room. Hulk's hobbies include singing (horribly) and collecting motorcycles.

In Double Trouble, Hulk appears briefly in the opening movie as a villain in Blue's new movie. He throws a bus at Jasmine in the movie, but is not mentioned in the story again.

In Red Hot Rumble, Hulk appears as a playable character. He also appears as a boss. He seems to be friends with Charles the Third and Gran Bruce.

In the anime, Hulk (voiced by Joe Cooker) is pretty much the same character as a major JADOW enforcer. He, Charles the Third, and Gran Bruce were fired for their incompentence after several attempts to do away with Joe and were banished to the real world after King Blue's defeat.

Gran Bruce

Aquatic Terror Gran Bruce (voiced by Roger Rose) is a shark-like agent of Jadow. He's considerably lower on the intelligence scale than most of the other Jadow, and often has a hard time with words as simple as "gum". He speaks in an Australian accent, and attacks with his large mouth, as well as launching mines and regurgitating trash.

In Red Hot Rumble, he appears as a playable character, and is friends with Charles the Third and Hulk Davidson.

In the anime, Gran Bruce (voiced by Ross Lawerence) is a stark contrast to his game counterpart. He is somewhat more intelligent and is usually calm and level headed, as opposed to Charles and Hulk (although he can get just as worked up). He, Hulk Davidson, and Charles the Third were fired for their incompentence after several attempts to do away with Joe and were banished to the real world after King Blue's defeat.

Goldie

Goldie (full name possibly Goldie Blue) is Silvia's twin sister, and they are completely identical in every way (save for the fact that Goldie does not wear glasses). She is only ever mentioned in the first VJ game, and then only in the extra stories as a stand in for Silvia. She appears in Silvia's story and Alastor's story, being kidnapped by Blue in both. In the latter however, she ends up becoming a romantic interest for Alastor. Goldie's name is a pun on Silvia's (gold and silver). This is furthered by the pair being called "The Twin Jewels" at the end of Silvia's story.

In Silvia's story she is kidnapped by Blue (who is planning to sacrifice in order to create the ultimate father-daughter team with himself and Silvia). However, Silvia rescues her, and she even receives her own V-watch (although she is exactly the same as Silvia when in costume except for a golden visor instead of Silvia's purple one). In Alastor's story, she and Alastor were coincidentily watching a movie in the same theater. After she attempts to flirt with him, she is pulled into the movie by Blue. As in Silvia's story, Goldie receives her own V-watch.

Goldie's only appearance was as an extra in VJ1, but she appeared in unlockable anime concept art in Red Hot Rumble. Also, in the video for "Viewtiful World", one of the back up singers (along with Silvia and her mother Ivory) is a brown haired woman in a yellow version of Silvia's outfit. This may have been an early design for Goldie. Goldie's canonicity is debatable, as she appears only in sidestories.

Ivory

Ivory (full name possibly Ivory Blue) is Blue's wife, and presumably Silvia's mother. She has, so far, only appeared in Blue's story as a replacement for Silvia. As opposed to Goldie, Ivory has short brown hair and wears a pink outfit. She can also be seen singing backup in the "Viewtiful World" video, along with Silvia and a third girl identical to Ivory (possibly Goldie in an early design).

In Blue's story, Ivory is captured by King Blue, leading Captain Blue into battle with his own dark counterpart. Just like Silvia and Goldie, Ivory is given her own V-Watch in the end. Ivory's canonicity is debatable, as she appears only in sidestories as a stand-in for Silvia. However, Silvia does acknoweledge the existence of a mother in Joe's story ("Momma told me my daddy died."), which may very well be Ivory.

Characters in Viewtiful Joe 2

Jet

Jet Black (voiced by Keith Szarabajka) is Joe's father and a movie theater owner who first appeared in Viewtiful Joe 2. His full name in transformed form is Dark Emperor Jet Black.

During his early years as a theater owner he helped the director, Captain Blue, get to his fame, both by serving as the cinematographer in Blue's films and by showing the films in his theater for all to see. During his work, he met the actress Junko, and the two were soon wed and had their first child, Joe.

Jet had always wanted to show his son Joe a true hero ever since he was born. However, as time went on, Jet found himself wanting to be that hero. It was around this time that Jet discovered the Black Film, a cursed piece of celluloid which twisted Jet's ideals into something else entirely. Shortly after this, Junko gave birth to Jasmine, but fell into a coma and died as a result of a car accident, which have led further into Jet's corruption.

As time went on, Jet found himself obsessed with finding the seven Rainbow Oscars, which would allow him to control the fate of Movieland, but more importantly, would make him the ultimate hero for his son (or so he believed). Granted a Black V-Watch of unknown origin and commanding an army of invaders dubbed Gedow, the newly-appointed Black Emperor made his attack on Movieland just shortly after Joe's recent victory over King Blue.

Upon reaching Black Emperor's domain, he attacks Joe and Silvia with the massive Dark Kaiser, a mecha so large it towered over earth and was near equal to the sun in size. It could fire salvos of lasers and missiles, create shock waves by pounding on the sun, imprison the Giga MegaBot Six-Six (made up of Joe's Six Majin and Silvia's Great Six Machine) within Saturn's rings, manipulate Jupiter's gravity in the form of red orbs, and create fire dragons.

Despite the Dark Kaiser's destruction, Jet still manages to win, revealing himself in front of his son and using the seven Oscars and the Black Film to become the Dark Hero Jet Black. His power not limited to Movieland (unlike Joe and Silvia), Jet crashes the annual Viewtiful Awards and attacks with superb swordsmanship, as well as flight, the elements of fire and electricity, teleportation, the ability to summon crescent-like sickles, energy blasts, and control over gravity. Fortunately, the enthusiasm of the audience gives Joe and Silvia enough power to transform in the real world, allowing them to fight and ultimately defeat Jet. With the Black Film's power finally broken, Jet reverts back to normal, and his V-Watch changes back as well.

As Joe and Jet come to terms with each other, a large castle appears in the distance. Jet hints that the castle is connected to the Black V-Watch and Black Film, though it remains to be seen exactly what that connection is (as Capcom currently has no plans for a continuation of the series).

Jet's henshin costume is a modified Samurai-style armor, with a crescent on the helmet and all black. In the final battle, he changes his costume to all-white instead. The colors associated with Jet seems to be black and white.

GEDOW

The invasion force controlled by the Dark Emperor. Their units are surprising similar to the JADOW's, right down to their Bianky-like "Flatlies". However, they seem to have a much more powerful force at their disposal.

Dr. Cranken

Mad Scientist Dr. Cranken (voiced by Peter Renaday), the squid-like mad scientist of the Gedow and Black Emperor's right-hand man proves himself a dangerous being. He is responsible for creating much of Gedow's weaponry and minions. Despite his brilliance, he is quite prideful as to his work, leading him to seriously underestimate his enemies, and can also be somewhat impatient.

Dr. Cranken first appears alongside his supposed "greatest creation" Cameo Leon, where he sicks the lizard on Joe and Silvia while he lends support in the background by means of a series of weapon turrets. Upon Leon's defeat, Cranken flees. He later reappears alongside his newest robot, Miss Bloody Rachel, and orders her to destroy Joe. However, through the course of the long fight, Rachel begins to develop a "heart", something that Cranken despises ("What good is an android with a heart?" he bellows in rage). He attempts to destroy Rachel, and then attacks the heroes directly, using a series of mechanical tentacles armed with various weapons, and even going so far as to separate his head from his body to continue the fight. However, Cranken is ultimately destroyed at the hands of Viewtiful Joe.

Cranken's name and appearance is obviously based on the Kraken.

Big John

Drill Sergeant Big John (voiced by Michael Gough) is a large Tyrannosaurus Rex, clad in soldier helmet, vest, and with a walkie-talkie. According to the game's manual, Big John used to play minor roles in monster films prior to joining the GEDOW as a sergeant of the "5th Panzer Division, 1st Reconnaissance Regiment, 2nd Platoon", a position that he is not shy to bragging about. In addition to using various military vehicles to hound his enemies, John attacks directly with his biting jaws, large tail, and the inexplicable ability to breathe fire. Joe and Silvia defeat him, and obtain the first Rainbow Oscar for their victory.

Although officially the boss of the first stage, John continuously reappears throughout the game to challenge Joe and Silvia, usually by piloting a customized tank and ambushing the heroes at various points. He also wears different costumes in each encounter, usually to reflect the stage's theme. At one point, he even adopts a martial arts get-up by calling himself "Kung-Fu Dragon Big Lee". Despite claims that he's not John, the disguise doesn't fool Joe. Sadly for "Lee", he gets blasted away by Alastor before he can fight.

In the anime, Big John appears in a single episode. Despite John's intimidating presence, he is ultimately defeated by Blue Jr., who demonstrates his new Henshin powers for the first time.

Flinty Stone

Ancient Guardian Flinty Stone (voiced by Roger Rose) walking, talking crocodile-esque statue. Flinty Stone is found in the deepest bowels of an ancient temple, guarding the second Rainbow Oscar. However, it's quickly revealed that he's a narcoleptic, often falling asleep at the most awkward times. He's also very slow to keep up in conversations, and tends to fall asleep when overwhelmed with voices.

In combat, however, Flinty is quite powerful, throwing iron spheres and pounding the ground with force. He also demonstrated the ability to transform into an airborne serpent, divebombing Joe and Silvia with high-speed drilling attacks. However, Flinty often falls asleep again after such an attack and is then vulnerable (though he'll recover life while he's snoozing). Flinty is defeated by Joe and Silvia, and the Rainbow Oscar he guarded is captured by said heroes.

Cameo Leon

As the name implies, Cyber Phantom Cameo Leon (voiced by Dave Wittenberg) is a chameleon, created by Dr. Cranken as the Mad Scientist's "greatest creation". In stark contrast to Flinty Stone, however, Leon is a very hyperactive figure, usually running his mouth constantly (much to Dr. Cranken's annoyance). It's through his rambling that Joe and Silvia get their first major clue to the Gedow's plans, involving the Rainbow Oscars and the Black Film.

In battle, Cameo Leon demonstrates the ability to turn invisible, a talent which he is very proud of, and doesn't hesitate to brag about. He also attacks with his lashing tongue and a high-speed spin attack in which he bounces around the room. During the fight, Dr. Cranken assists Leon with a series of laser and missile weapons, as well as provides Cheeseburgers for Leon to regain life with (though Joe can take the food for himself if he can cut Leon off from his meal). Leon is eventually defeated, (though he still rambles incessantly in his death throes) and Joe recovers another Rainbow Oscar, though he gets too distracted by its beauty to spot Cranken as he escapes.

Frost Tiger

Blizzard Hazard Frost Tiger (voiced by Fred Tatasciore) is the brother of the late Fire Leo from the first game, and arrives on the scene (wiping out Big John in the process) to meet with Joe and Silvia. As opposed to his brother's hotheadedness and arrogance, Tiger is very calm and almost unemotional, the result of his focus towards the teachings of the Samurai. Although he holds no grudge against Joe for Leo's death, he desires a fight with him to test the hero's mettle, to see if he's willing to die for his goals.

Frost Tiger's fighting style is similar to his brother's, running around the arena and launching snowballs everywhere, as well as creating massive ice walls and blades. He also uses his claws to repeatedly stab Joe, though, like Leo, quick dodging of all the stabs can leave Tiger extremely vulnerable to counterattacks. Joe ultimately stands triumphant against Tiger, and gains another Rainbow Oscar for the win.

In Red Hot Rumble, Tiger appears a boss in a tag-team with his brother, Fire Leo. He is not a playable character.

Miss Bloody Rachel

Created by Dr. Cranken from all the combat data collected from Joe and Silvia's fights, Serial Killer Android Rachel (voiced by Vanessa Marshall) (later retitled "Wardroid") initially appears shortly after Frost Tiger falls, disguised as Silvia. Despite an obviously unconvincing (and yet very flattering) performance, Joe stupidly gives "Silvia" all the collected Rainbow Oscars, who quickly reveals herself and flees.

Chasing her into the "Captain Blue" film from the first game, Dr. Cranken appears and orders Rachel to destroy Joe and Silvia, which she unemotionally complies to as she transforms into a golden version of Big John. After an initial defeat, Rachel tries to recalculate her opponents' strength as she transforms into Flinty Stone and continues the battle, but is still unable to win. Upon hearing Joe's words that she can't win because she has no "heart", Rachel begins to question her existence, ultimately leading her to suffer a mental breakdown.

Still confused, Rachel keeps battling in the forms of Cameo Leon and Frost Tiger before finally coming to understand what it means to fight with heart, something that Joe and Silvia have in spades. However, Dr. Cranken, angered at how his creation has been contaminated with emotion, cuts off Rachel's joy in a fit of rage and a bolt of lightning. Fortunately, Rachel's damage is minimal, and some quick repairs from Joe gets her back on her feet, allowing her to give back the Rainbow Oscars out of gratitude.

Rachel, like many other characters, appears in Red Hot Rumble as a playable character. In battle, Rachel is capable of summoning a trio of satellites to provide cover fire and unleash electrical shocks on enemies. During the storyline mode, she acts as an assistant to Director Blue alongside Sprocket, but is eventually possessed by Tsukumo, a ghost, and is used to fight Joe and the others. Eventually subdued, Tsukumo leaves Rachel and she returns to normal. Over the course of the game, Rachel expresses interest in various "human" things, such as the idea of a lone hero against an army. The color associated with Rachel is golden, as is her "skin".

Characters in Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble

Jasmine

Jasmine Black (voiced by Hynden Walch) is Joe's younger sister and an aspiring actress. In her first appearance (Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble), she finally lands her big break when she is cast as the leading lady in Captain Blue's newest movie. However, when the movie's footage is stolen by the evil Madow henchmen, she teams up with Joe and Silvia (the latter of which operates the V-cam, allowing Joe to transform) to retrieve it and defeat the Madow.

Jasmine soon gets involved in the Madow's plans, and chases the film thief into a sound stage, where she crosses pathes with the diminutive Vanilla of the Science Task Force. Grabbing her V.F.O. saucer (much to Vanilla's chagrin), Jasmine becomes playable for a brief period, using Vanilla's V.F.O. in much the same way as Joe's.

In the conclusion of Double Trouble, Jasmine is briefly reunited with her mother Junko who came down from Heaven for a single day to visit her children. Jasmine is granted her own transformation with the use of the V.F.O as opposed to a V-Watch like Joe or Silvia. Her personal transformation phrase is "Junshin-a-Go-Go, Baby" (a reference to her mother, Junko, with her brother's trademark suffix added to it) instead of "Henshin". Her superhero outfit is similar to Silvia's but is pink and has a few cosmetic differences. The color associated with Jasmine appears to be pink.

Junko

Junko Black (voiced by Hynden Walch) was an award winning actress, Jet's wife, Captain Blue's friend, and Joe and Jasmine's deceased mother. She received great acclaim while alive through her roles as the heroine in Blue's movies. However, her career eventually hit rock bottom (presumably due to Blue's movies falling from popularity), and she found it difficult to get back into the limelight. One night on the way to an audition, she was caught in a car crash and was severely injured. Despite the hospital's best efforts, Junko died from her injuries.

In Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble, she came back to life for a single day and took on the guise of Queen Heinderella. Attempting to steal Blue's film, which is said to contain the power of "super hero-ness", Heinderella creates Madow, and sets her forces upon the Movie Studio theme park, with Joe and Jasmine chasing after the film along the way.

In the final part of the game, Joe fights and defeats Heinderella, who then reveals herself to her children. Having been granted a day on Earth, it is revealed that she never planned to conquer the world and that Junko desired to see Joe and Jasmine for one last time, as well as see exactly how strong they've grown since her death. After saying goodbye to everyone, she went back to the afterlife, and her story was adopted by Blue as a new movie.

MADOW

Created by Junko (as Queen Heinderella) as a sort of test for Joe and Jasmine, the Madow proved to be quite the adversaries. Their main soldiers are the Clownies, Madow's answer to the Biankies and Flaties, while their top subordinates are fellow movie heroes, corrupted to serve Madow after being drained of their "hero-ness", the very essence of one's heroic personality (though it's later revealed that they joined Madow willingly as part of Junko's test for her kids).

Gadget-Cop

A parody of RoboCop, Gadget-Cop is one of Joe's favorite movie heroes (next to Captain Blue, of course). However, when Joe meets him in the real world, he's shocked to learn that the Madow had drained his hero-ness, and reduced him to a mindless slave. Fortunately, Joe restored Gadget-Cop to his former self, and managed to get both an explanation and an autograph from his hero.

Gadget-Cop's mechanical arsenal include his twin pistols (his "double 3's"), a concealed missile launcher in his torso, and a high-powered drill kick. Being a robot, however, he's weakened by water.

Killer Hands

Killer Hands (based off of Edward Scissorhands) is another favorite hero of Joe's. Having been drained of his hero-ness as well, Killer Hands attacks Joe atop a church bell tower. Because his hands being a pair of Swiss Army Knives, Killer Hands has a wide selection of weapons to attack with, such as mallets, blades, and even wings for flying and dive-bombing Joe with.

Killer Hands considers himself quite the stylish hero, but soon finds himself envious of Joe following his defeat and restoration. Hoping that some of that style will rub off on him, Killer Hands pulls Joe into a rather painful hug.

Vanilla (Alter Woman)

A tiny woman in a saucer-like V.F.O., Vanilla is a member of the "Science Task Force", a defense group tasked with protecting their world from enormous threats (a parody of Godzilla-styled monster films). Because this game takes place in the real world, Vanilla is actually a miniature and when Jasmine first meets her while chasing after Captain Blue's stolen film, however, she's surprised to see that Vanilla's so tiny.

After a brief journey in which the player controls Jasmine, she and Vanilla recover the film, only to run afoul of Queen Heinderella. Jasmine manages to get the film to safety, but Heinderella proceeds to drain Vanilla's hero-ness. By the time Joe arrives, Vanilla has already been corrupted. Driven to fight Joe, Vanilla transforms into a gigantic Ultraman-styled warrior dubbed Alter Woman.

Although gigantic by her world's standards, Alter Woman is only about as big as Joe, but she delivers a fight all the same, launching energy spheres at Joe and summoning meteors to smash into him. She'll also radio for a missile strike once she feels threatened. Joe wins the fight despite the opposition, and restores Vanilla back to her old self.

Meta Rangers (Digi and Log)

A pair of insect-like warriors (like those seen in Kamen/Masked Rider) that have also fallen to Madow. Digi (in black) and Log (in green) arrive to challenge Joe. The brothers have the habit of finishing each other's sentences, though Digi tends to miss his cues on occasion.

At first, the brothers fight Joe one at a time, but later team up and fight together. They both have a variety of attacks to use, such as dashing punches and flaming kicks. To beat them, Joe and Jasmine team up (Joe doing the fighting and Jasmine supporting him with items) and restore their hero-ness.

Characters in Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble

Tsukumo

Tsukumo is a ghost-like creature who haunts the movie set where Blue is filming his new movie. At first, his presence goes unnoticed, but, over the course of the game's Story Mode, he silently arranges to sabotage the picture by stealing and replacing props and putting the crew in increasingly dangerous situations.

Eventually, Sprocket sends Rachel out to investigate the props, where she is attacked and possessed by Tsukumo, who then reveals himself to the characters. According to Tsukumo, he is enraged that all the mechanical cameras, microphones, and other movie-making devices are never given an actual role in the very movies they help to make. Using Rachel as a vessel and creating a massive body out of the various props on the set, Tsukumo proceeds to destroy the set. The battle against Tsukumo is the final part of Story Mode, where the player fights him alongside Joe, Alastor, and Blue Jr. (Silvia will join if the player is controlling any of the other three characters).

After the battle, Tsukumo, still speaking through Rachel, is saddened that he still can't have a role in the movie. Joe, however, points out that without cameras and microphones to make the movie, there is no movie, and that such roles are just as important as the actors themselves. Upon realizing this, Tsukumo calms down, and soon disappears happily. Blue, meanwhile, decides to make Tsukumo the star of his picture, much to everyone's surprise (since they were all fighting for the starring role to begin with).

Characters in the Viewtiful Joe anime

Captain Blue Jr.

Captain Blue Jr. is a character who originated in the Viewtiful Joe anime and is voiced by Kate Levine. Blue Jr.'s real name is Junior, who was Captain Blue's successor until Joe came along, and because Joe was the one who got Blue's V-Watch, he is very jealous of Joe. Despite his jealousy, Junior decided to be Joe's sidekick and offered his knowledge of Movieland as a helping hand. Later, after Joe defeated Blue at the end of the first saga, Junior was offered a V-Watch but refused, so Blue just gave Junior a small case which would help Junior if he would ever change his mind. Junior later did use the contents of the case, 2 V-Yoyos, to transform for real and helped Joe and Silvia to defeat Big John. Blue Jr.'s transformation line is "Henshin-a-Yo-Yo, Baby!!" (a spin on Joe's own transformation line, which in turn, is a spin on the original line, "Henshin!")

Captain Blue Jr. appeared in a game for the very first time in Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble (voiced by Tara Strong). He uses many Yo-Yo based attacks. In RHR he has two playable forms; Captain Blue and Young Blue Jr. (his un-henshined form). All characters have alternative costumes, Captain Blue Jr. appears with his "fake henshin" outfit and Young Blue Jr. appears as Kid Joe (Joe as a child).

Sprocket

Sprocket is a character in the popular franchise Viewtiful Joe. Unlike most of the characters, however, she was made specifically for the anime, and so far has only appeared in one game, Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble. In the anime she is voiced by Wendee Lee and in the games is voiced by Vanessa Marshall.

In the anime, she is depicted as rather strict and calculative, but is often portrayed in a slightly humorous light, such as wishing she had become a librarian like her mother suggested instead of being a villainess. She is also insanely jealous of Silvia. In fact, in an episode where Alastor and Silvia were supposed to get married, Sprocket's lines mostly consisted of "I hate that woman!!" or variations of it. She has also been known to don several disguises over the course of the series.

In Red Hot Rumble, Sprocket is not a villain, and joins the ranks among the games heroes (she is even considered for the lead role by Blue in the opening cutscene). During the opening, Sprocket is the one who suggested the fighting auditions to Blue. She is referred to in the manual as the Alluring Sprocket, which may be her super hero name. Capt. Blue seems to be enamored by Sprocket's looks and "curves", and is often blushing around her. Her rather busty appearance is frequently turned into a small running gag, as she has to constantly zip up her dress, only to have it unzip once again soon after.

According to the promotional videos for Red Hot Rumble, She originally attacked with kicks and punches like the others. However, in the final version of the game, she ended up using Biankies and other Jadow henchmen (such as Red Leaders and Gelbies) for her special attacks and blowing large, damaging kisses for all of her normal attacks.
