Before Lapin came to CNN, she reported with KPSP-LP in Palm Springs, California. There she reported live from San Quentin Prison during the execution of Stanley Williams. She also did a series on possible wrongful convictions in California. She had first explored this subject with the Center for Wrongful Convictions in Chicago, a group whose investigations led to a moratorium on executions in the state of Illinois.

She had also worked with the First Business Network reporting daily from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Her work with the network included her travels overseas to cover the surging value of the Euro and a position aboard the inaugural trans-Atlantic Wi-FI flight.

Lapin has been a general assignment reporter for KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky. Both stations are CBS affiliates.
