Yoshimitsu (nickname Yoshi) is a playable character that appears in the Tekken and Soul Calibur fighting game series. Both franchises are property of Namco.
History
Yoshimitsu first appeared in Tekken and has appeared in every game in the series. He made the crossover to the Soul with Soul Calibur and also appears in Soul Calibur II. In both Soul games he is a hidden character and must be unlocked. Yoshimisu will most likely appear in Soul Calibur III when it is released in Fall 2005 for PlayStation 2.
In both franchises, Yoshimitsu is a samurai-ninja and fights with a sword bearing his name. Many of his moves are shared across both franchises. He is known for his unorthodox moves and abilities, most notably teleportation and self healing. His most devastating and risky attack is his unblockable Suicide move, where he turns around and thrusts his sword into his abdomen in a form of seppuku, ideally also hitting the opponent as well. Interestingly, the opponent receives more damage than Yoshimitsu himself if hit. Another signature move called Stone Fists (known as the 1A series by veteran Soul players) has him spinning like a top. In Soul Calibur 2, its power lies in its tech-crouching, tracking, and mix-ups. In Tekken, its power lies mainly in its speed and use in combos and juggles.
Yoshimitsu's story is different for each game series. Since Soul Calibur takes place in the 17th century or so and Tekken is contemporary, the Soul Calibur Yoshimitsu is considered the ancestor of the Tekken Yoshimitsu. One idea is that Yoshi is a different character in each game time line. The name he takes comes from his sword, 'Yoshimitsu' - 'Lucky Light'. This sword is wielded by the leader of the Manji Ninja Clan.
Tekken
As the leader of the Manji Party, Yoshimitsu dedicated himself to providing food, medical assistance, and shelter to the ever-increasing number of political refugees around the world. Unfortunately, with a constant lack of necessary funding and manpower, Yoshimitsu was unsure about the future of his organization. When Yoshimitsu heard about The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, he envisioned a union between the Manji Party and the Mishima Zaibatsu. With this dream in mind, Yoshimitsu decides to enter the Tournament immediately. He must defeat Heihachi Mishima at any cost. Following the events of the King Of Iron Fist Tournament 4, Yoshimitsu went to Dr. Boskonovitch's lab and found Bryan Fury on an operating table. 'Dr. B' was about to perform a procedure to increase the life span of the cyborg. Days later, Yoshimitsu returned to find the lab destroyed and it's workers either dead or badly injured. After being told that the destruction was caused by Bryan Fury, Yoshimitsu vowed revenge on the cyborg in the 5th King Of Iron Fist Tournament. Yoshimitsu is favoured among many Tekken fans, particularly due to his somewhat unexplored character and his longevity. (He is one of the few characters featured in every Tekken game released as of Tekken 5.)
Soul Calibur
Yoshimitsu is the sole surviving ninja of the Manji clan, massacred in an attack by the samurai lord Oda Nobunaga. Yoshimitsu lost his right arm in a battle against the lord, but he replaced it with a mechanical prosthetic arm and set out across the sea in search of the "Ultimate Weapon," Soul Edge, so that he could take his revenge against Lord Nobunaga. During his journey, he came across many horrible scenes left behind by the azure knight, Nightmare. He sensed the hatred and despair of the victims and reflected on their current plight. In his meditation, he concluded that although vengeance is his greatest desire, if he were to give in to his hatred, he would be no better than either Oda Nobunaga or Nightmare. But even with that realization in his mind, he continued to pursue the Soul Edge nevertheless. When Yoshimitsu finally reached Ostrheinsburg Castle, it was devoid of any signs of life. Unknown to him, he had arrived too late to witness the fateful battle between the wielder of the Soul Edge, Nightmare, and the wielder of the Soul Calibur, Chai Xianghua. Upon leaving the castle, he sensed that the evil energy of the castle had somehow transferred a similar energy into his tachi, and so he left on a journey to rid his blade of that energy. Unfortunately, as he was sleeping, the tachi had been stolen by Voldo, who had mistaken it for the Soul Edge. Yoshimitsu did not want the evil energy to fall into the wrong hands, so he set out to retrieve it, and acted as a Japanese Robin Hood along the way. Yoshimitsu infiltrated the legendary Money Pit of "the Merchant of Death," Vercci--without ever meeting the rumored guardian, Voldo--in an attempt to steal the treasures of the pit for the poor's sake. But completely by chance, he had found his tachi alongside a fragment of the Soul Edge, both emanating similar evil energies. Yoshimitsu decided that if there was another object in the world with the same evil as his tachi, which he had now named " Yoshimitsu," it mustn't be allowed to exist, and so he set off on yet another journey, without a doubt in his mind about destroying the cursed Soul Edge.

Character analysis
In Soul Calibur II, Yoshimitsu is regarded as a top tier character. He blends a devastating combination of speed and damage potential. His abilities shine at close range, but he is well-suited at medium range as well. At long range, he possesses the tools to close in to where he is more comfortable. A number of his moves are derivations of his Tekken moves but he has a variety of Soul specific moves as well.
A large factor in Yoshimitsu's strong close-range game is his aforementioned Stone Fists, which leads immediately into his potent fully-crouched game. From crouching, he has a variety of mix-ups, including going directly into his powerful throw game. Whereas most close-range characters such as Taki and Talim have throws that come out slower than normal in order to balance out their advantages up close, Yoshimitsu's throws actually impact one frame faster (the game runs at 60 frame/s). His throws also inflict very good damage and most give him excellent wake-up position as well.
To fully harness Yoshimitsu's potential means a mastery of his "tricks" as well. These include, but are not limited to, his just-frames (moves that require inputs within one or two frames), his Flash move, and his Pogo and Meditation stances and their subsequent followups.
In an homage to the Tekken series, Yoshimitsu has a life-stealing throw that, if connected, gives him the ability to perform three random Tekken moves. He can also access this ability if in Soul Charge Level 2.
