NOFX is one of the earliest Californian punk bands. They were formed in 1983 by Fat Mike. They played "punk by default" due to the bands lack of musical ability.
They released their debut EP "nofx" on Mystic records in 1984, which then surfaced in 1992 on the maximum rock and roll C.D.
They recorded "liberal animation" in 1988 with Brett from Bad Religion. The album was re-released in 1991 on Brett's label EPITAPH. NOFX had signed to epitaph by 1989 bringing out the album "s+m airlines".
It was not until "punk in drublic" (1994) did the band become "popular" (much to their own distaste). The album went gold. In the same year punk broke into mainstream with Offspring's "smash" and Green Day's "dookie". Smash has become the biggest independant record ever, selling over 8 million copies to date.
Since 1994 they don't give neither interviews nor do any music videos, but still gain fans around the world. NOFX have continued to release independant records.
The band also release many EP's (fuck the kids, the longest line) on Fat Mike's own label "fat wreck chords". The label houses bands such as the mad caddies and lagwagon.
According to fans, NOFX have never "sold out", never gone mainstream, never wanted to be on MTV and have always told it like it is.
