Born in Cloquet, Minnesota, she went to Paris after high school to study drama, then returned to New York, where she became a fashion model. In 1976, Dino De Laurentiis cast her in his remake of King Kong, which received unfavorable press and caused her to disappear from the screen until she obtained a small part in All That Jazz. She became a star opposite Jack Nicholson in 1981's The Postman Always Rings Twice, and garnered an Oscar nomination for Frances in 1982.
