The Hive is a fictional top secret underground laboratory located beneath Raccoon City in the Resident Evil video games, and is a setting for the Resident Evil films as well. For the film, the incomplete U-Bahn station at Berlin, Germany, was used as the location shoot for the facility during March 2001. Although destroyed by the second Resident Evil film, a similar facility appeared in Resident Evil: Extinction, controlled by an AI known as The White Queen.

In the Resident Evil games

The Hive was first depicted in Resident Evil 2 as a secret Umbrella Corporation laboratory. Located under Raccoon City, the laboratory is used for the research of bio-organic weapons, notably the G-Virus.

In the Resident Evil films

In the film Resident Evil, the Hive is a multi-level research facility, owned by Umbrella Corporation, deep under Raccoon City. Housing more than 500 research and support staff, the facility's security is controlled by an artificial intelligence, the Red Queen. The theft and deliberate release of one of the facility's products—the T-Virus—starts the chain of events depicted in the film's opening. Instead of creating large sets for the Hive and Raccoon City, the film crew filmed on location at Berlin, Germany and Toronto, Canada. The underground labyrinth structure of the Berlin U-Bahn was conducive to the acting and promoted a sense of realism and mood the production. Although the Hive is sealed off at the end of the film, it is reopened in Resident Evil: Apocalypse by the Umbrella Corporation. Infected creatures spread out of the re-opened Hive into Raccoon City and Umbrella Corporation placed the city under quarantine, enforced by security forces. Near the end of the film, the city is destroyed with a missile. Resident Evil: Extinction features another Hive in Death Valley, which is used for the research of a cure to the T-Virus and of the Tyrant Program. This Hive is taken over by the protagonist Alice at the end of the film.
