Punch Records is primarily a record shop and hip hop record label based in Birmingham city centre, England. It is also a dance & music workshop for the Afro-Caribbean community.
History
Punch Records was founded in Perry Barr, Birmingham in 1996 by Ammo Talwar.
The shop began as a black music record store, and also a place where underground DJs from the West Midlands could show off their mixing and rapping skills
Workshops for children were later added and in the form of an eductaion pack that was used by local schools, with workshops and tutorials. From this Birmingham City Council became involved and have since used Punch for various events including a roadshow in Centenary Square during Birmingham's Capital of Culture bid.
The success of the record shop has led owner, Ammo, to relocate to The Custard Factory where the company now runs rhythm, song writing, music production, poetry, lyrics, dance, street art, photography and percussion lessons for the local community, schools and youth centres.
In 2002 Punch produced a film about Birminghams unsung Afro-Caribbean musicians called Preskool, the company has produced other short films.
2005 saw Punch relocate to the Custard Factory in Digbeth; this is also the year that Punch records went online.
Punch now collaborate with companies such as Urban Music Seminar, Artfest, the BBC, Sony, BMG and Warners. OOM Gallery
